I’ll preface with this: I’m a huge Howard fan. Nothing but love for the man. But he is in his mid fifties now, and voices change over time. Killswitch’s FOH engineer does a fantastic job for them and has for years, but with Howard not being present at soundcheck, and his microphone ‘technique’ (cupping it sometimes with two hands) it is what it is. Again, love Howard but the way he’s always held a microphone is literally the worst I’ve ever seen anyone ever do and I’ve worked for a lotta singers and rappers over the past 9 years. **edit** Howard does have moments (brief moments…) where he doesn’t cup the mic as bad and that’s what makes mixing a vocal like that so difficult, it’s a constant moving target.

@@snapascrewthat’s why I love death metal a lot. The genre is extreme vocals, all the time. There are no clean vocals, but I feel with clean vocals, especially as you age, is a lot more noticeable when your voice changes or if someone isn’t on their game that night.

Howard is leagues better in the cleans department, as for screaming, that's really debatable. I mean heck, even Jesse himself has admitted he's better. But the reason he sounded like this could've been due to no vocal preparation prior to going on stage. I say this ‘cause usually when he does guest vocals for KsE, oftentimes he's with Light The Torch, so his voice is used to it. It's obvious his voice aged, especially when it comes to screaming live.
