gosh, it has been years since my Monstera Deliciosa had that large of leaves! Yours is a very happy plant!😁 Mine, about forty years ago, was in a pot two feet wide and about the same height. It is still in that ceramic pot. When I moved out of my apartment it was covering the whole ceiling of three quarters of the apartment (about three hundred square feet). Yet it was in the same pot. There were two windows and a sliding glass door illuminating the space. One window and the door were a south elevation. The other window was fixed glass and high up (Mid-century modern cathedral ceiling) on the east wall. So it had plenty of light. I used to leave the door open to the balcony and the bedroom window also so that the sea breeze would provide constant fresh air. The result was spectacular. It took Fred (after thirty years I named the plant) about two years to completely cover the ceiling. the leaves were just as large and luxurious as yours. the weird part were the air roots. I cut them off at around eight feet from the floor. When I moved out, all of that growth had to be cut off and stuffed in a dumpster. My erstwhile neighbors flocked around for cuttings. Fred is still around and now is about fifty-five years old (I was ten when the garden department manager at the Santa Ana Newbury's gave me the cuttings which started my plant out). He is soldering along, but is much deteriorated from his days of glory. I hope to recover the plant in the next few years.

Monsteras being epiphytes, they can actually stay in smaller pots than people think. I'm thinking of the video by Summer Rayne Oaks where she tours the largest private research collection of Aroids at the Missouri Botanical Gardens and you can see a very old monstera that is over 2 stories high that is in a pot the size of the pot that this monstera was just potted out of. Let them grow! Don't chop them unless they're too big/it's for aesthetic reasons.

He scared me when he said he was going to chop it’s head off. I’ve had my monstera over 40 years and have only repotted it TWO times, the last was a year ago. They don’t need a lot of fussing with. Mine doesn’t have a pole but I may try it as it’s so wide that when I have to bring in for the winter it takes up a lot of room in the kitchen.

This not only goes for Monstera👍 I slowly switch to said orchid bark on top and a bag of sand on the bottom, on all of my perennial's. Potting soil is for seasonal greenery only and mostly remains in the bag.

@@zuzuspetals9281 I got my monstera as a two leaf (TINY leaves) cutting from a friend back in September 2021. It is way bigger already, and I even started getting leaves with fenestrations very early on. I haven't had to repot it and I'm not sure when I actually will have to. It just keeps throwing out bigger leaves with more fenestrations, and the only leaves that have died were those two small leaves it started with, which wasn't surprising given their dwarf size in comparison to all of its other leaves. I also don't have a pole and so far see no signs of needing one - it has instead used its own root system and pot to create a support for itself, with a VERY thick root winding around the edge of the pot that's very sturdy and seems to be holding its entire weight up that way.

I went and watched that video. It’s probably an important distinction that their monstera was attatched to a wall. The person leading the tour mentioned that “once it attaches to the wall, the pot doesn’t matter”, so maybe the aroil roots become more of a supplier.

You can trim the roots and keep the plant in a smallish pot while the plant itself is big and growing. In bonsai roots are trimmed all the time. A lot worth learning in bonsai techniques.

THANK YOU!!! I have no idea where this idea came from that touching the roots is 'bad' or will harm the plant in some way. It's ludicrous and you actually *need* to interact with the roots every now and then in order to root prune. Roots are tough, so thank you again for the reminder to folks that they can and should look into bonsai techniques ('cause they go AT those roots!) for healthier plants.

@@ALNizhoni Well, I guess some plants may be very sensitive in their roots, but most can tolerate root pruning. The best result is achieved through pruning right at the beginning of a growing season when the plant is just starting to grow again. I wish you all the best with your plants.

Trimming the roots in bonsai art is meant to stunt the growth, so that you get a small tree that looks like a mature one. If you trim the roots on your large Monstera, then the new growth won't be as big as previously.

I appreciate that you did this on your own. So many big monster repots everyone does it in a weird way, like on a table so they are working against gravity, and then they need at least one other person. As a single person who is fairly strong (move furniture etc myself) I would NEVER be able to repot a plant with someones help bc getting them over and willing to help would be too darn big a pain in the butt! Plus, it's messy work and people don't like getting messy unless they are the plant parent! So I really love that you showed how to maneuver it with your body weight and the assistance of gravity and using your legs etc. Sure it's a definite workout, but it's clearly completely possible so long as you can lift the plant in the pot to start!

Many people don't have people they can ask a random favor from with so much inconvenience. I'm def not the only one! Plus, I think most of us plant ppl get a whim and do things right away, so scheduling someone to come over would also be an annoying wait.

Not too many people mention where to place the pole. I learnt that the hard way. Now I use a very tall diy moss pole. Instead of repotting, I leave enough space in the pot to top dress it. The roots take it over and love it. It rejuvenates the plant without having to repot It

@@adrian1718 I mean, that initially I placed the pole in the middle of the pot, thinking the stem would vine around the pole. The pole needs to be off center, and the back of the stem placed against the pole in a straight line ( tied to it). The air roots come out from the back of the stem and I gently guide them to grab onto the pole. Eventually I might not even need the ties to secure the plant to the pole. I have one stem in the pot, climbing up the pole. The leaves are huge. It is also necessary to secure the pole to something (wall, couch leg) once the plant is higher up, to prevent it from falling over.

Cool trick for keeping your mosspole damp with minimal effort is putting a plastic cup with a hole in the bottom ontop of the pole and filling it every time it’s empty. This changed my monteras life. She puts out a leaf a week in growing seasons.

my monstera was touching the ceiling in a gallery type room with 4m high ceilings and was covered with multi-fenestrated giant leaves - and then I decided to move! and being a plant lover, I was determined to find a way to take her with me. I chopped her into many parts, guarded the mother plant/ stem very well for the transport and repotted all the chopped off parts together into one big pot with the mother plant (and one new pot), so I now have two much wider plants instead of one. for the first half year after moving she looked a little flat and only produced little new growth and reverted back to the simplest form of leaf (without any cutouts), but now she is back to her monstrous self.

I just got my first monstera and I believe I’m counting 5-6 different stalks in the pot. Of course I grabbed the biggest plant I could find at the nursery. I’m now realizing that it might be a bit of a job to repot it. The stalks appear to be growing in all directions with no support. It has been suggested to me to gently separate the plants using chopsticks to separate the roots😅 I am very anxious! I intend to make a handful of different smaller pots of monstera out of it. Luckily, mine is not as tall as yours. Maybe 2-3’ tall and 3’ wide. Wish me luck!

Damn, Pothos are hardy as hell. I’ve had hundred of different kinds of plants and I have to say in my experience, Pothos are among the hardiest. You must have done a number on it 😂 It should bounce back eventually, though!

Beautiful plant! Have you considered root pruning as a way of coping with the size? You'd also have to take off some leaves to compensate, but it will help keep it a more manageable size.

Absolutely love monsteras! We had one for about 15 years and it grew to around 3 meters of height, that it started to basically climb the ceiling 😳 Sadly, the monstera one day caught some kind of illness or something, I'm not sure, so my mom had to cut it all the way down, because it couldn't hold straight up anymore. We still have the monstera but it's not so alive anymore and doesn't grow as much :(((

Alright, Lee! So this is not fair!!! Why is your monstera so much bigger, fuller and healthier looking than mine???? I’m doing everything I can think of to encourage their growth but it seems to be moving at a slooooooow pace. I have four of them; had them under a tree in the summer (I live in New Jersey), and yes, they grew a few new leaves. But nothing impressive. One seems so have something wrong with her currently (brown spots developing) 😩! I hope I will not lose the leaf. Or worse - the plant! But I am glad yours is so absolutely beautiful! Sorry you're having trouble with your Monsteras. Small incremental changes and seeing how your plant responds is what I do. Sometimes it can take years to figure out a plant for your environment.

4 possibilities. 1- Water (either too much or too little) 2 - Sun (mostly too little but can be too much) 3 - Soil (unlikely but if it's been two years or so without a repot give it a go) 4 - Pests (Keep a close eye on your plant to see if you spot anything)

New sub here, my monstera's leaves are facing different ways after it grew outwards, i repotted with a stick now, maybe the bumps it created when going over the pot will straighten with the stick 🙏. I'd love to see a video on fixing an unkept monstera or a rescued one

Your monstera is such a dream 😍 I wanted to use a tree branch as a pole for my monstera too but I heard that with watering there could be some rotting of the wood, do you think it's a thing to worry about or not? Thank you in advance 🥰

Birch is fairly rot resistant. Using a well draining mix ensures your pole isn't 100% soaking in water all the time. You could use a non-toxic weather sealant (I dont).

You could use a cedar pole. They don't rot and they also repel pests.

hi! So with the holidays coming up I have been anxious about leaving my plants alone for over a week. Particularly my new rattlesnake plant. She seemed to be finding my bedroom dry because she started to have browning on the tips, so I moved her to the bathroom as this seems to be the room that is least affected by the dry air of the radiators. I am debating wether I should even bother getting a humidifier which would risk creating an inconsistent environment when I am away. (It's no really plausible for me to ask someone to come fill and clean a humidifier in my home every two days) I've seen people talk about creating a sort of temporary greenhouse situation using things such as upside down clear plastic bins, or some sort of a saran wrap contraption when spending time away from home. So I was wondering if you had any tips for caring for plants when you are away? Could make for a fun video idea :)

I had a catastrophic repotting of a gigantic unstaked monstera last year. Snapped off almost the entire plant. After I finished beating myself up for adopting this neglected plant and then mauling it, I stuffed the broken off stem and all of its aerial roots into the soil and hoped for the best. The plant is thriving, and pushing out big leaves. I still need to decide what I want to do, because the plant (and its sibling) are happily growing on tangles of woody stems. I have them lots of new support, but can’t bring myself to hack them apart, because they’re obviously so healthy.

Your monstera is the MOST GORGEOUS indoor grown specimen I have seen! Just beautiful, bold and healthy. I live in south Florida and have the same plant outside my front door, they are very big and pretty as well. I mean, yours looks just like mine and I’m in tropical weather. OMG it just brought up all the memories of how hard it was for me to repot my big old monstera she's starting to become a big monster now your plant is really beautiful it's going to grow fast next to that big window with lots of light and all that new soil that you just added it doesn't take them long to fill that space in I remember shortly after I replanted Gaia my plans name she started growing really fast can't wait to see how much yours grows in the coming months also looking forward to seeing what other updates you have coming keep up the good work

By the way I'm doing an experiment right now I have a fairly large monster and instead of repotting her I started cutting back her roots and putting her back in the same pot mind you it's a pretty big pot and she's a pretty big plant she grows outside all year round in my back patio Gaia is actually inside and is quite bigger for some reason the one outside I haven't gave a name anyways she's doing really well and still growing large up on the pole that I have her set on the 4x4 but this is fairly new it's only been a few months now can't wait to see how it comes out

I got a monstera cutting bout 2 yrs ago. It took a long time to take off, but it finally has. Grown bout a foot and half in a yr. Starting to split nicely and many new leaves coming in. Cant wait for it to get real full, tall. Thank you for all your advice. Noted....

I have two monsteras that need repotted and staked. They are both old plants but not really large as they've gotten neglected, sunburnt, forgotten, moved too frequently, etc. over the years. Ive taken them on and still struggle. One is growing sideways out of the pot and needs staked asap. The other I had staked, then I repotted and stuck it back down into the dirt as I didnt know at the time they were climbing plants. Its now starting to climb again and has finally grown some nice new leaves. I can't believe how lush and healthy your plants are!! I think mine have a harder time in the dry Utah air.

Thank you for the lovely video.Maybe if you used a cultivator hand tool and just pulled off soil at the bottom and sides you could refresh the soil there and put the plant back into same size container and delay going to the largest container which will be heavier!
