I was privileged to spend an evening with Dame Edna during her Final Farewell Tour at the Los Angeles Ahmanson Theatre in 2015. It was blissful evening with the brilliant and magnificent treasure, Barry Humphries and his beyond-delightful persona, Dame Edna... truly a night I have and will never forget. He was an absolute one of a kind and a gift to us all. RIP, you funny man.

I took my six-year-old son to see Dame Edna in San Francisco many years ago, not telling him what he was in for except that it would be quite fun. When she came out on stage and said hello possums, my insightful son leaned into me and said ‘dad, that’s really a man.’ I said ‘I know, that’s what makes it funny’ and we both laughed all the way through.

There was a comedy award in Australia named after Barry Humphries but the snowflakes got it changed because of some jokes about gay people he told 20 years ago.
@scswp6945
@scswp6945 3 жыл бұрын
@@lapalad Ridiculous that they changed it! It was part of a tongue-in-cheek act for goodness sake. There was no malice in it as far as I can see. Her appearances with Matt Lucas and Will Young (the latter on the Rob Brydon show) had such leanings and they were hilarious - and I’m a gay man! There’s a difference between comedy and homophobia. Dame Edna, I believe, was not guilty of the latter.

The jokes about gays in San Francisco or Lenny Henry being West Indian wouldn't fly for most comedians. But Humphries was always able to get away with that because as brilliant as Edna is, he's also not afraid of sometimes making her look naive or backward. It's an amazing character.

He was so incredibly sharp and witty off the cuff...It's one thing having a prepared routine, but to be able to come back to questioning like that and be so funny. Absolute legend ! Is there anyone around now who is as funny as this off the cuff ? There was no filter with Dame Edna and yes sometimes, especially looking back there would have been an inappropriate bullet being fired off every now and then, but without that freedom you don't get that natural comeback and the flow of all the great lines live like this. People these days stop and think before they wise crack in case they upset someone and as such it's all become rather sterile. I literally cried laughing at some of those comebacks and stories. Humour is such a tonic to difficult times.

Dame Edna in Adelaide half a lifetime ago and she brought Sir Les and Sandy with her. What a great show that was and such a happy one. As usual she threw Gladies into the audience and I saw one heading toward me so I put my hand up to protect my face and caught it much to the annoyance of the person behind me who was hoping to catch it! How I treasured that flower and I dried it to look back on and remember that wonderful evening. Thanks to You Tube for keeping all those memories alive. A comedic Genius. Michael Parkinson was always an amazing partner during these segments. Both enhanced one another so Naturally. Both very generous. Both now moved on. Two more stars in heaven which is now Richer with their presence. Thank you Barry and Michael for sharing with us. Gods speed..
