Kilt verses Skirt: My thoughts on the difference between kilts and skirts

Hi this video was made in response to a viewer who was trying to make a kilt and said that it looked too much like a skirt. I thought that it would be helpful to make a video discussing some of the things that I've learned that make a kilt have a distinctive look.

@@MxBraeWilliams ive had little success so far ive made 6 of them ive had them close on the opposite sides unknowingly till i actually bought a couple i used to be good at sewing as a teenager used to make baggy jeans and sell them they had great quality they sold for 10 bucks in 1982 i started 1978 in 8th grade went through alot since then the quality is no longer there 40 yrs later having to learn all over again its been a challenge never thought i would lose my god given talent always able to fuse patterns together womens to mens patterns seems like im not able to now working on a jean and synthetic suede boxpleat kilt looks good from the back ive cut this to fit looks very western looks like i will have to try a traditional front apron instead of one boxpleat in the front on each side wish i could send you a pic of it Henry

@@henrycoleman4858 I'm glad you're finding some success. I think that Kilt making is a different skill than traditional sewing so there can be a steep learning curve. In Kilt making you don't cut out patterns and then sew them together as you do in normal sewing. I've read that if you stand on your knees with a straight back the kilt should end about one to two inches above the floor. And the apron goes from outside hip bone to outside hip bone.

Thanks for the comment. I think that is a good approach for a traditional kilt. I know a lot of people debate the proper length. I prefer a traditional Kilt that is shorter rather than too long. And I definitely think that an apron that goes from hip to hip looks best on a traditional Kilt.

there is context. there is identity and intent. a skirt is made 'to be' a skirt, where a kilt is made 'to be' a kilt.
