Going to Scotland in September again, to visit my McKay/ Bain and Gunn/ Wilson sides of the country, and Isle of Skye so I think I have decided to split the difference and take my Kilts and Culture tartan in PV. Also I think it will travel better in a backpack since we wont be staying in one place and be on the move.

Yes, I’d wear a kilt. We visited there in 2022, wore my kilt and had no problems. It was warm and sunny. Polo shirt, hiking boots and high socks. Just like in the USA, people were very positive about it and were even more positive when they found out I was an American.

Yes I would wear my Gunn Clan tartan kilt while visiting Scotland. I would definitely wear it to a clan event while I'm there.

I would wear a kilt in Scotland. But then it would make me want to buy one there. So maybe buy one then wear it. Less I have to take over with me.

I wore a kilt for our MOST formal dinner in Scotland last summer, as well as to the Royal Military Tattoo in Edinburgh.

Considering its been more than a year since the last time I wore tourture tubes yes I would wear a kilt every day I was there.

On Eric's point of making a good show about Irish/Scottish mythology, there is a very good episode of the podcast Motherfoclóir where they pitch ideas about the same thing. It's an excellent show in general, and that's one of my favorite episodes. They specifically mention the táin bó cúailnge, which is the epic story of Cú Chulainn. If done well, you could easily get 7+ seasons out of that

Regarding button-down collared shirts and Brooks Brothers: last summer, while visiting my son in NYC, we visited the Flagship store. I'm sure you know there's a restricted BB tartan. I asked the salesperson who greeted us to show us something in "their" tartan. He had not a CLUE what I was talking about, and blamed it on the "name" of the store being sold multiple times. The other aspect of this was Eric's assertion that a button-down collared shirt with a tweed jacket is a faux pas. Almost ALL my non formal dress white shirts have button-down collars, and I've never felt embarrassed wearing one with a kilt jacket and waistcoat and bow or necktie. Of course, I wouldnt' mix those shirts with a Prince Charlie. I'll expand into a question, however: Are there outdoor summer times when Global Warming favors a well made poly viscose kilt (perhaps with a tie and waistcoat) INSTEAD of an 8 yd 16 oz wool kilt?

A question of pleating. I've a Lovat Scouts (MOD), pleated to stripe (alternating red/white on the vertical). Would this work with E Pluribus Unum?

It could work, but the pleat depth would be very shallow. Alternatively, it could have GREAT pleat depth, but the pleat face would be much wider than normal.

@USAKiltsOfficial gotcha. The sett is smaller than Lovat Fraser hunting, so either smaller pleats or deeper pleats; or go to sett.

On the dressing up a casual kilt, I have to respectfully disagree. 99% of the population isn't going to know the difference. We all do because we are subject matter experts, most people aren't

With baggage fees, weight, and how much room in your luggage you want for souvenirs, taking a great kilt isn't really a great idea.
