A wonderful song rendered by a wonderful singer; The Songstress, #KimBurrell!
...and y'all know how good she is - so I did what I could to give a little insight on this AMAZING gift she has. And yeah, the song DOES get a little good to me.
Major shoutouts to ‪@faithcitymusic7453‬ for the FANTASTIC presentation.
If you want to get right to the analysis, head to 1:43!

When you kept trying to Quench the spirit of God through this video, I was like, “God about to have His way anyways”. And sure enough He did! You started ministering yourself. You went off of analyzing Kim Burrell vocals and really started breaking down the lyrics of the song and had us to really envision what Calvert is about! I’m like he is teaching and preaching! Let God have his way!!!!

She has the rare ability to literally think ahead of a note. Her playing keys/organ also helps her to know exactly what notes she wants to land on in a run. And now it’s so effortless. She can sing the same song a million times and every time it’s gratifyingly different. She tops herself. She understands music theory in a way that people in classical music do.

Wow...every addition ebb and flow of all the nuances in this selection sounded strategic but effortless at times as they were right on cue (making it feel like a reflex of emotion). Whether it was production, skill, or divine intervention. Everybody worked in the workings of this right here! Bravo.❤🙏 You really pick some greats and make the sounds achievable. You are giving eyes and ears to the process of a creative vocalist. Love you and thank you!😘

I read that Kim was classically trained as a soprano sometime in the 2010s which is why her range expanded like that (or I suppose you could say solidified cause she could always hit high notes, they just weren't as easy). And that rasp is intentional, that I'm pretty sure of - if you look up her singing Let There Be Peace on Earth in 2015 at the Kennedy Center, her tone is CRYSTAL CLEAR

I am not sure what you’re hearing this rumor about her being classical time but he is not. Kim has always had range from the early 90s when she used to do leads for recording gospel choirs and her first album. She has always had a little rasp that turned into a husk once she started having vocal issues. She addressed her issues with vocal lessons and medical attention and her voice got clearer and lost the husk and when back to the slight rasp she had. However her vibrato got a little slower. But you are right, her voice got clearer because she has been putting in the work. However I will say that her rasp isn’t intentional. It’s always been a part of her vocal identity because of how her vocal folds close as she sings. She speaks with a rasp as well. But when she applies the technique she learned in the mid 2000s, it helps to reduce rasp and induce clarity. It’s more accurate to say that her clarity is intentional. Her rasp however is her default way of singing.

Just found your channel and I’ve been watching video after video. I must say I love hearing you break down these black singers. I’ve seen other non-black teachers/coaches try to break down some gospel singers but they don’t catch everything or aren’t always accurate in demonstrating what the singers are doing. You gotta stop, sit down and listen to this story of Calvary. And it may take 2 or 3 more times just to let it minister to you. Kim Burrell is a phenomenal singer but the background singers? I remember when I played the old school version. I must admit, I played some blues and jazz chords. Because I felt and heard those chords in my soul. Being a musician and/or vocalist, we feel music differently (i.e. deeper). I love the piano's and organ's intro too. I have to download and play this. I love how Kim always has a touch of jazz when she sings. Yes Lord, the background singers are slaying. Their harmony is tight. I agree with you. I closed my eyes and was transported to that day. OMG, who wouldn't want to serve a God who allowed his son, Jesus, to suffer and die giving us a second chance at the tree of LIFE. JARON, my brother in Christ, you are AMAZING and a BLESSING! ✝️👏🏼BRAVO! 🎼🎹🎤🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵

Okay Ya'll....Mr. Smallwood did not pen this song. "Calvary" is a traditional black spiritual that dates all the way back to black gospel's earliest origins. What Mr. Smallwood did was create an adaptation. An arrangement that lent itself to a more modern interpretation of the song/ Every great gospel singer and group from gospel's golden era did a rendition of this song. From Mahalia Jackson to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Marion Williams, Roberta Martin, and on and on. Not trying to start anything...just letting the misinformed know what it is.

I heard Mahalia Jackson song this. I like Richard Smallwood's version the best.

This video was EXCELLENT. Kim Burrell is a master at her craft, but most importantly, she’s a MINISTER. This song laid me out. And your analysis taught me a lot, but your witness convicted my spirit and I thank you so much. This vocation you have been given and cultivated is anointed and I thank God you’re out here using your gifts. Blessings and merry Christmas to you!

She has one of the most beautiful voices in fospel as well as R&B I know, but it is sad how they treat her in the gospel/christian community.
