Absolutely... I completely understood what Ebro was alluding to from the jump and what Kim repeatedly tried explain. To bring an entirely different conversation changes the conversation. Not that you can't have that conversation, but at least address the 1st one first. It absolutely has to be frustrating... so you're forced to just throw up your hands and say, Go Ahead and YOUR point. 😆😆

They stopped breaking new artists and just played what was popular, pushed whatever artist had management with a bag for the DJs and left the culture and artform in the background. Nah. Mecca is blaming Diddy for what took place FAR BEFORE Diddy arrived. Hip Hop was FOUNDED on 'sampling'. If you want to blame Diddy for not being original then blame literally every Hip Hop producer that existed before him as well. The 'music' in Hip Hop has always been the lowest common denominator when it comes to 'originality' because it takes original work from other genres. All Diddy did was advance the art of sampling and made it more GRAND. The music was fun and transcendent and it resonated across all demographics. If anything, without Diddy, Hip Hop most likely reaches a ceiling and fades into obscurity before becoming the most popular genre. He helped take it to another level.

He just made it Grand and in turn helped make Hip Hop BILLIONS because it was 'fun'. You can't play the 'originality' card against Diddy and act like Pete Rock, Premo, Dilla etc weren't using work from other genres to make their 'art'. Hip Hop was FOUNDED on sampling.

This video is a clear demonstration of why hip-hop is struggling to progress in today’s climate. Mecca was making an excellent and insightful point about how we arrived at this state in the industry-exploring the lack of integrity and focus on artistry-but Math seemed unable to grasp the bigger picture. Instead, he fixated on one detail, completely missing the broader implications of the discussion. It’s truly disappointing to see this level of shallow thinking dominate the conversation. It’s an example of why hip-hop is where it is today: too many people stuck in one-track mindsets, unable to think critically about how the choices we make now impact the future of the culture. Until more people in the community begin to engage deeply with these issues and think beyond immediate profits or surface-level debates, we’ll continue to see the art form deteriorate. Let’s hope this serves as a wake-up call for the culture.

Mecca's point was originality as it relates to Rap production correct? Rap has literally ALWAYS 'bitten' off of other genres. If we are going to blame Puff, then blame the forefathers for literally creating a genre that based its EXISTENCE on 'sampling' someone else's work. There are so many other things that deserve blame other than Puff for why Hip Hop is the way it is currently. Puff had a hand in A LOT of the greatest Hip Hop music EVER.

Mecca looks intelligent in a room or comment section full of idiots. Puff sampled just like every producer before him. So what? If you're going to call Puff unoriginal, then make sure you don't leave out Rza, Dre, Kanye, Premo, Madlib, Dilla, Pete Rock, Havoc, Alchemist etc. They ALL sample. I don't want to hear about who transformed the sample more. Make the beats from SCRATCH with NO SAMPLE if you want to be called a true, original artist. The bottom line is, Hip Hop comes from sampling. In its PUREST FORM it's not really 'original' musically.

"Make the beats from scratch with no sample if you want to be called a true original artist". Bruh what or who is a "true original artist"? All the greatest rappers and producers we pay homage to have used sampling. Are they not "true original artist" whatever that's supposed to mean? All Mecc is saying is (and I'll use this example), there's a big difference in Common and Large Professor (Extra P.) using "Ice" by Spirit for the "Resurrection Remix" than biting the whole beat and tweaking the hook like Puff did for "I'll Be Missing You" which he used from Sting.

@@SiincereARC No, I’m just saying it’s funny I notice my comment got deleted. In the comment I said Math 100% knows what he’s doing. But that’s what hood cats do when they know they wrong. They stifle the conversation by fronting like you’re so far off they can’t grasp what you’re saying. Truth is they understand you and maybe even agree but their ego can’t allow them to concede so they’d rather frustrate you to the point you just drop it. That’s how they avoid taking the L and admit being wrong.

The culture's 'mindset'?? Hip Hop's FOUNDATION comes from sampling. You could make the argument that 98% of Hip Hop's actual 'music' isn't 'original' because it involves taking work from others to make a final product. That certainly didn't begin with Puff.

Puff and Bad Boy made it about materialism. Don’t worry if I write rhymes, I write checks. Biggie co-signed it. Y’all love talking bad about other regions but not your own. When Nas dropped IWW and De La dropped Stakes Is High on the same day there was a divide. When Jay dropped Vol2 and Black Star dropped on the same day there was a divide. The people who stayed true to hip hop’s roots vs materialism. It happened. Can’t erase that. That happened in NYC/east coast. De La, Jeru, The Roots, etc were against the direction Puff was taking hip hop. Puff called people haters because they called him out on his bullshit. Math is delusional. He just don’t want to put any fault on his region.

Intelligence is a VERY complex thing. Let's just say they are more knowledgable regarding certain subjects in Hip Hop. Mecca was wrong about the Diddy thing though. Sampling existed WELL BEFORE him and a lot of those beats were just sample loops with little to no creativity added to them back in the day.
@Irontiger19

@onyxonyx4744 You think Mecca was wrong. A lot of people, including me, think he was right. People on the show are giving their opinions. It's not always about right and wrong or whether someone agrees with you or not. What he was saying was he believed Diddy opened up the flood gate for that kind of production method. It's his opinion. I say intelligence because Math and others made such a big deal about his opinion. It doesn't matter if you agree with it or not.

Art is in the eye/ear of the beholder. The arrogance that allows Math to think trash rap started down south because he doesn’t like it is the whole reason New York lost the lead in Hip Hop. The rappers I believe he’s calling trash, built organic audiences in their region (and many got rich just going gold regionally) by making music that reflected their audiences experience and life perspective. They sold music directly to that market and performed on the Hip Hop “chitlin” circuit and became foundational to the culture. The trash comment is wild disrespectful and misinformed.

I also agree with Mecca’s logic and reasoning in this Diddy production convo… the standard went left at the rise of the shiny suit era which pushed out the NYC conscious & Boom Bap era.
