I met her at The Metro in Chicago. Waiting in line for the dumb stoic, incredible and ridiculous meet and greet, i was wearing a dumb fan shirt i made with a collar. She almost didn’t look at me, and said, “ oh …..is that our new polo shirt? “. I said yes, and asked her and Lee to sign it. He scribbled his name legibly. She wrote a big “K” with a scribble, but then she drew a big lipstick with lips behind it. Steve didn’t say much. “T” word had too much to say. I sadly lost the shirt a couple years ago. It just disappeared into the ether waves.

Kim Gordon is one of the most prolific artists, be it her work on Sonic Youth or her individual work, her creative output has remained absolutely extraordinary in content as well as form, covering themes from a vast array of human experiences which are timelessly relatable. Sonic Youth's impact on alternative music scene and pop culture in general is phenomenal, and Kim has stood out as one of the few icons who continue to invite keen interest and awe. While many artists have explored difficult subjects, her work has always been rooted in a certain raw sincerity, crafting music that despite being hard hitting as was needed, never veered away from being compassionate. Her persona having become a style and cultural icon is reflective of her appeal as an artist committed to embodying all that they stand for.

I met Kim a few times when I lived in Northampton. Once I was a pretty bold fan boy and after crossing paths with her at a coffee shop I came up to her car where she was about to leave and told her I’d heard she was moving to Los Angeles and just wanted to wish her well before she left. She smiled that very Kim smirk and replied “I’m not moving yet.” Wasn’t until later I realized she was flirting with me. I wasn’t really interested in something romantic, she probably wasn’t either, but I definitely feel a kindred connection to her and still wonder what might have happened had I been a bit less shy and star struck. A reminder that rock stars are human too I guess
