NOTHING substantial will happen (unless Mulkey is stupid). Although Babb’s story adds new details to a preexisting perception of Mulkey as insensitive toward LGBTQIA+ community members - specifically her players - and writes she is estranged from her father and sister, Tammy, much of the story draws from previous publications, including Mulkey’s 2007 autobiography, “Won’t Back Down,” or from statements made on the record by interviewees. That approach largely insulates the Post from legitimate claims of defamation. It could empower the Post, should Mulkey sue, to invoke anti-SLAPP protections, which guard journalists from intimidation designed to suppress their First Amendment rights, to not only defeat her case but force her to pay legal fees and costs.

There’s a quote I sort of remember from a book called Breaks Of The Game by David Halberstam that chronicled the 1978-1979 Portland Trail Blazers season. This was to the effect that being a “healthy coach” didn’t necessarily lead to being a healthy human being. I think this describes Kim Mulkey quite well. I am, by the way, referring more to the Washington Post article. You find in that article that, as a coach, Mulkey has few peers. Even the former players who have criticisms of her acknowledge that. But you’d like to think that when Baylor (of ALL institutions) dissed her, she might have learned something about the limitations of loyalty as a measuring stick, that it is a two-way street.

Coach Mulkey’s description of “sexism” is described by her as unacceptable because the women on her team are young. I would argue that this is not sexism in any fashion. The comparison the reporter makes is good vs evil, he says nothing about the inferiority of women. Ultimately, I would say that Kim is wrong in believing sexism is occurring in this article. She is also wrong in trying to take the consequences away from her players actions. Just because they are young does not mean they are not adults; these women have to learn that the way they act is not void of criticism due to their age. I will admit “dirty debutantes” may not be appropriate if the reporter was alluding to what pulls up on the internet after a google search..
