So many good points made here. When I started, I was able to bend really early on… I then started bending all over the place thinking I was being bluesy… it took another 2 months to realize how bad it sounded, which could have been avoided had I slowed down and ear trained the bends properly. I wasted months of practice doing it wrong, and more time fixing it. Another thing newer players do, is try to force licks from other songs to fit within a backing track… another great reason to really listen FIRST, and then begin to formulate a plan of attack after fully understanding the flow and feel of the song.

Kim is the personification of Chicago style blues harp. No overblows! Ronnie you’re a monster too. Been following Kim since the first Tbirds album. Cherry pink and Apple Blossom White is how I discovered his monsterness.

Nice one again, Ronnie! Thanks for also posting links to the backing tracks so that we all can try your advice on the same music as your video uses. BTW, I really like the Front Porch Blues product that I bought from you! Really great ideas explained and played clearly with notes and mp3 -- super!

The slow riff you play at 12:58 reminds me of Mickey Raphael, with a bit of Charlie McCoy. Nothing wrong with that, right.

Hi Ronnie. I am a painter. I play the harmonica from a hobby and I learn from yours. One photo is inspiring to me, you play the harmonica on her. If you allow, I will paint oil on canvas. Greetings from Europe !

Ronnie, give me your favorite blues lick to paint as a symbol in a portrait. For example: 2, 3, 4, 4 band, 5

Killer playing Ronnie, outstanding. I'm transcribing one of your videos you did on Sonny boy style kind of help me groove. Anyway i noticed a bit of 5d bending in there. Now i know people bend the 5D a lot but like practicing a lick that involves that and playing it over and over is that gonna damage the reed cos of the fact the hole does not really have a bend in it just an inflection of a bend? I've heard of guys busting the 5d reed a lot who say it's cos they bend it a lot so... I don't know about that one.
@Harmonica1233 жыл бұрын
thanks Gary. That note bends down about a 1/4 step or so and it's a great note to bend. The key to bending the note and not damaging the reed is related to your breathing. You must use diaphragmatic breathing and do so easily. The reason people notes go flat all the time on 4 and 5 draw is that they're using too much force and pulling from up high (lungs) not down low (diaphragm). Last point, none of the reeds/notes were designed to be bent down in pitch. Also, if you attempt to bend past the lowest available bend, that will definitely stress out the reed and cause it fail more quickly.
