I accidentally made a marble hypertufa pot several weeks ago, and I have been trying to duplicate that effect. Finally I have made one and I think I have figured out why it turned out that way. It may work for you if you want to try one yourself.

Suggestion: Turn pot and container upside down, then apply hot water over the red plastic....this expands the plastic...and should be able to come out. My humble opinion ... =D. It's worth a try

Before that small hole was drilled, try pouring boiling water over the plastic mold while it is upside down. It "softens/stretches" the plastic mold

I really like the look of this hypertufa pot. It has been awhile since I did any hypertufa pots, so will try it again and see if I can get the same look. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, the extra water and the vibration will give you that smooth appearance. Just ask a concreter 😜 In the precast world this is called a class 1 finish, well done 👍

That's beautiful! Another thing you could try to make releasing easier is pouring boiling water to soften the plastic.

I lo e this video, cause it really shows the trial and error and success. I think it didn’t come out easily because, you washed the pot and didn’t spray, so the water adhered to the cement. But you didn’t give up and the outcome was great. Amazing.

To get out the air- hold a hand sander -without sandpaper- against the outer mold to shake it up.

If you pour hot water over the outside of the plastic tub, it loosens the plastic and your mold will drop out Just be careful not to burn yourself

Soaking in water expands hypertufa making it harder to get out. If you turn over, pour hot water over mold. This makes mold expand , not hypertufa. Molds usually slip off.

Hi Kim i’m always wondering why you guys don’t use cheap dish soap to paint the interiors of your moulds when I watch you struggle with release... I just find that spray isn’t heavy enough when I work on large containers and it just gets sucked up in to the first layer of mix ...it’s cheap to buy a gallon size of dish soap ( it doesn’t have to be quality soap just slippery) and I just paint the insides my moulds with a brush...Sometimes I get lucky and find those waxed cardboard boxes they use for shipping produce and you can even ‘paint’ that with soap as well, instead of using plastic bags ...love your videos !thanks so much for all the great detail you provide!...from Ontario

I dont think the release problem is the filling but the dent in the bottom of the mold, it may hold on to the cement mayby next time put some tape over that, so it does not have such a hold :) The bobles only comes out if you shake the mold with the cement in it even more, I sometimes use a sander to vibrate the mold alot.. The smotth surface looks cool and I might try that out :)

Just an idea off the top of my head for helping to get it out of the mold (I have never done this so forgive me if it's a bad idea)... Could you place strings across the bowl, long enough that you can grab them later to pull out the pot? I know the strings would probably get stuck in the mixture, but if you cut off the loose ends, maybe it wouldn't be too noticeable.
@KimsGardensandHome

Probably on a really textured pot that would work very well. Great idea.
@twelvemo1
@twelvemo1 4 жыл бұрын
Do you ever use a 'release agent' like sculptors use ? YOu can buy special products but bit of dishwashing liquid spread thinly over the surface of the mold might help, without effecting the smooth finish too much.
@KimsGardensandHome

Seeing the holes made me think of making jam or pickles. You take a plastic knife and run it down the sides and it releases the air bubbles so they are not trapped inside. Might work here too.

If you girls have any kind of vibrating wand or something you could have stirred that around the hypertufa mix before you made the pot and you would have had less air holes.
@KimsGardensandHome
@KimsGardensandHome 4 жыл бұрын
I have heard that before. I like the airholes most of the time, But I guess that could give me the marble look again, right?
@MaxPowers
@MaxPowers 4 жыл бұрын
@@KimsGardensandHome No airholes is done with vibration. Smoothness is easier achieved with water content. If you are afraid about too much water making your final product too weak, then just add a little superplasticizer. It reduces the amount of water you need for a viscous mix by A LOT.
@isaacwillson8617

Does that marble look fade in time? I wonder if it could be replicated by putting a finish inside of a regular plastic container- or if it always has to be a slick shiny plastic container inside. I can’t wait to try it.
