The Amiga will always be the pinnacle of my gaming life! I started out with handhelds then on to Atari then speccy right through to Xbox-one X. Did the whole pc thing from 486 to modern day too, but nothing has ever come close to being there when the Amiga/St arrived. The state of wonder and excitement of those years will never be surpassed. Amiga has no peers, but you had to be a part of it at the time to in anyway understand :) Anyone who's in there 50s who loved these computers knows exactly where I'm coming from I'm sure :)

My brothers had an amiga and I played a lot of games on it, but I was too young to get secret of monkey island for instance. Stunt car 3D, lemmings and gravity force were big favourites I remember. The game that truly awed me was Ultima underworld on the early 90's PC. It was so bizzarely ahead of its time and came from seemingly of nowhere that it's as surprising as finding rabbit skulls in pre-cambrian rock. It's not just the graphics, that's kind of understandable, if impressive; but you played as yourself, not as a party, you could jump and swim and solve these puzzles in multiple different ways, and the enemies where not pure evil but these warring factions that you could befriend or try and stay out of the conflict, sneaking was a thing, you could take notes on the ingame automap without having to use pen and paper.

Even in their early 60s! I had a Commodore 128 in the 80s but the Amiga was a revelation when I got mine in 1990 and had such a loyal, enthusiastic fan base. It was way ahead of its time and there was so much you could do with it on top of gaming. I made a fair bit of music and art on it too. Even used it for maths.

I grew up with an amiga, 500 first and then 2000. I remember the feeling of the disks and the smell and sounds of the computer. The satisfying clicks of the keys. The music was better than pcs that came later

Amiga is very popular on retro scene. Just look how many FPGA recreations and Amiga accessories, expansions are available now. There are even projects that turn Raspberry Pi into Amiga accelerators and RGB to HDMI converters. You can also get new cases in many colors, including transparent one. And original hardware is expensive as hell. The new games are being released every year and there are many projects to get a complete Amiga experience on a PC, Rasberry Pi like FS-UAE, Amiga Forever, PiMiga etc. The most interesting projects are UnAmiga, MiSter and Vampire Standalone boards that can replace original hardware adding all the modern features to get rid of all the hassle.

A great video for my favourite computer. Some surprising choices and some even more surprising omissions but then that's the thing with the Amiga, there are so many great games to choose from. I don't think I would have had both Sensible Soccer and Sensible World Of Soccer on the list, just pick one (SWOS) and go with it. Glaring omissions for me are Rainbow Islands, Hired Guns, Eye Of The Beholder 2, Flashback, Kick Off 2, UFO: Enemy Unknown, James Pond 2, Midwinter, F29 Retaliator, Monkey Island 2, North & South, F/A18 Interceptor, Battle Isle, Supremacy, MegaTraveller, Carrier Command, Simon The Sorcerer, Railroad Tycoon. Still its nice to see Flood make the list, love that game.

It's interesting that Kim finds Amiga something like ZX Spectrum, only better. Because I have the same opinion - I believe the reason is because both computers relied on the mandatory hires (bitmap) graphics! Unlike C64! And with some well known games ZX tried to compete with Amiga, so there were decent ports to ZX after all. C64 had it much differently, and hires mode was avoided. ZX games sometimes had really nice monochrome graphics, and its BOBs could move decently smooth if coded well. Scroll was the problem also, but some games had smooth and fast scrolling too. Everything was done in purely software way. Sprites/blitter objects too. But those ZX games never shunned from moving nice looking graphics around, same as Amiga, despite being jerky and all. When Amiga appeared, some features of the hardware reminded on C64 (sprites, raster control via copper), but some were similar to Speccy - bitmap mode, and blitter objects. Crucial thing - Amiga did it with ease, using chipset, full of colors and without attributes. I like to think Amiga actually represented the synergy of C64 and ZX, raised on completely different level. It was ultimate 16 bit computer&console wonder in one package.

Syndicate and colonisation my top two Amiga games
@aidandegg4176
@aidandegg4176 4 жыл бұрын
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. I was an ST kid so only ever played on my mate's Amiga(s) and nostalgia makes me root for the former and gives me some of my warmest memories - but the Amiga's are some of my most beloved systems of all time and I recall fondly being obsessed with "It Came from the Desert" and "Lost Patrol" and both the RTS and point and click Dune games. Also the Amiga is responsible for a shocking amount of my first purchases when I got my first PC such as the Eye of the Beholder games, Syndicate and so on. Indeed a quick look at my GOG library confirms this - a good 70-80% of my games on there I came to by way of the Amiga or having played similar on same. It also indirectly got me into the UFO/Xcom games as my love for Syndicate saw me pick up a bundle box set that included both. I suppose I also would never have got into Warcraft 2 and Command & COnqquer etc if it weren't for Dune, and the Dig made me pick up Broken Sword and a lasting love of Lucasarts adventures. So I will forever love the Amiga if for no other reason than it gave me loads of fun and more importantly informed my opinion and choices going forward and very much along with my first consoles made me the gamer I am today - not bad for a system I never even bloody owned!

I remember going to Makro as a kid and just watching Shadow of the Beast demoing in the store and wondering how I'd be able to get one ....£399 in 1990 (that's £1,000 today). My mate had one and every time I went round I'd be sick with jealousy. It seemed like he'd had it for years before I got mine, his was the batman pack which was out in 1989. The Xmas I got my Amiga (1990 Flight of Fantasy pack) was like pure magic, I paid half towards it with some money that id inherited and I damn well got my money out of it. Xmas day I opened it and booted up Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters and revelled in the graphics. At lunch time my Nan came round and gave me Kick Off 2 which I probably clocked up years of playing time and my Aunt gave me Ivan Stewart's Super Off Road. What a great time, take me the fuck back.

That is more of a personal favorites list, than top 100 of all time. There are some clear ommisions like UFO: Enemy Unknown, Pirates, Railroad Tycoon, Dune 2, Superfrog (top 10 Amiga game for me), Flashback, Another World, Body Blows Galactic, MK2, North & South... Also complete lack of classic point-and-click adventure games like both Monkey Island games, Simon the Sorcerer, Beneath a Steel Sky, Indiana Jones and Fate of the Atlantis, Lure of Temptress, Curse of Enchantia, Hook, Legend of Kyrandia, Gobliiiins games, Darkseed and Cruise for a Corpse. I personally would add games like Traps & Treasures, Lords of the Realm (one of the best strategy games on Amiga), Desert Strike, Zeewolf, Super Galaga, Colonization, Moonshine Racers, Genesia, Hired Guns or Eye of the Beholder series. I respect the choice of the author, it’s cool to see what games other people value. I just hope that if someone will look for cool Amiga games, he will also look in the comments section.

Games missing: Starglider2, Midwinter, Breach, possibly Carrier Command, F117A Stealth Fighter, Rocket Ranger. Also, there was a brilliant scifi version of Dungeon Master, where you were this guy trapped in a prison or something but you have a laptop that lets you remotely connect with four robots, which you then have to guide around dungeons, planets and prisons, to free you.

UFO, Kick Off 2, Champ Manager, A-Train, Colonization, Railroad Tycoon, Guardian, Gloom, Rainbow Islands, New Zealand Story, Hired Guns, Captive, Liberation, Micro Machines, Gods, Frontier, North & South, Monkey Island 1 & 2, Fate of Atlantis, Beneath a Steel Sky, Flashback, F1GP... wow we were spoiled...

@@AmigaFreak77 well why would you watch a list with the same top 100 as everyone else End of the day this is kims list of her favorite amiga games not yours, and it would be a pretty boring video if you have all the obvious ones on it I mean i could also put all of those games in my personal top 100 but the simple fact of the matter is ....its not usually the Amiga versions of them i am playing when i go back to them these days And i would much rather that Wings (a game i love that i cant play on anything else) was on here rather than seing Monkey fecking Island for the 100th time (a game that had a better known and ...just better all round pc port)

Interesting to get a sense of what was good on the Amiga... Sometimes I get the feeling gaming on the Amiga was held back by still using single-button joysticks by default, And Commodore's weird expectation that games support that. Obviously it's a platform where keyboard+mouse is also viable, but still... It really is easy to underestimate how much the control scheme for consoles and computers influences the complexity of the games that result. There was nothing stopping the C64 or Atari 8 bit computers from getting games comparable to the most complex titles for the NES... But having a 1 button controller instead of 4 buttons really makes that so much harder to implement. For that matter, NES and SNES games vary in complexity as much because of the controller as anything else about the systems... And the n64 definitely taught us how painful 3d games are when you don't have any analogue controls... (as most early Playstation and Saturn games did not. Although the dual analogue controller showed up to the playstation surprisingly early, it took a long time for games to catch up) Controls dictate plausible complexity. And the Amiga shows us how bad this can get, given it could easily keep up with later 16 bit systems in most regards, but still the games tended to often be more simplistic. (except of course that went the opposite way and took the same approach PC gaming did; where the only thing you could rely on anyone owning was a keyboard, and later on a mouse...)

C64 and Amiga games were at times infinitely more complex than the most complex 8 and 16bit console games. They have writable media, keyboards and a mouse. Why would a computer restrict itself to the simple input methods of a console when they have much more variety in options? Not to mention the fact you can use joysticks or joypads withmultiple buttons if you want to anyway.
@Giantwaspface
@Giantwaspface 4 жыл бұрын
That similarity to the C64 I had was what put me off wanting an Amiga. After years on the C64, I was so envious of my mates and their consoles, with their cool graphics, control pads and instant load times that I asked for a Megadrive for Christmas instead. In retrospect, I think I'd have preferred what the Amiga had to offer, but the allure of console land was way too much at the time.
@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 4 жыл бұрын
The default assumptions of the platform DO matter. Multi-button joysticks and joypads don't matter if nobody supports it. Same with other unusual input devices. I have very high quality motion controllers for PC - Razer Hydra - at the time what they were capable of easily beat what the consoles were doing. But... It didn't matter, because... How many games properly supported this? Basically none. Motion controls on the Wii vs PS Move are the same issue. PS move is technically superior, yet nobody used it. Amiga games to me demonstrate two extremes - PC like complexity with mouse + keyboard or extremely simplified logic owing to Commodore's demand that a Single-button joystick is usable. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground, which is what the consoles occupied. The control OPTIONS a platform provides, are considerably less significant in practice than the control DEFAULTS. How many PC games properly supported joysticks? Why were almost all of them built around the use of a mouse + keyboard combo even when this clearly wasn't the best choice for the given genre? Defaults matter. And they matter more than what's technically possible. (Did you know the Famicom has a keyboard accessory? And the Wii, PS2, PS3, Wii U, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, and switch ALL support the use of keyboards? - how many games do you know of on these systems that make effective use of this fact, hmmh? Yeah... exactly.)
