I think it's funny and ironic that he said that he was the BRAINS of the outfit yet in the following sentence says that he "could care less about her indignation." If you're truly "the brains" of the outfit you would know the phrase is, "couldN'T care less"!!

It is an expression, it is figurative, not literal. To say one "could care less" can mean that one is indifferent to a proposition(as opposed to a person that cares a lot). It would have a similar meaning as "I could take it or leave it". Just means a person doesn't care one way or the other.
