He didn't write it for international fans, he was inspired by the unreachable beautiful full moon of a 23rd of June. Later on Taemin came up with the idea that the lyrics are perfect to describe the relationship between SHINee and international fans and Jonghyun loved it and they all adopted that meaning as well. You're right about this song fitting him right now, I also dedicated this song to him, also I dedicate his own song Hallelujah to him as well, it describes perfectly how I feel aboit him. ‘Selene 6.23’ is a work of art by Kim JongHyun, written 8 years ago today and remaining one of SHINee's most vocally powerful tracks. The song was written in the presence of a supermoon and is described to reflect the emotions that follow a one-sided love with the moon. JongHyun conveys a feeling of reaching for something that is inherently and distressingly unattainable. The something that he is reaching for is not a tangible object, but an idea. The story of one-sided love with a celestial being that appears every night but is unreachable symbolizes the relationship between SHINee and Shawol, in a summary of JongHyun's words. In a rough translation, JongHyun composes the chorus, describing that though he extends his "hand, though I extend it with all my strength, I can’t reach you. It seemed like I got closer so I called you with a fluttering heart, but there’s no answer. I guess I can never reach you. Every day changes so quickly and you are warmly and brightly shining. I've never seen that turned back- is curiosity also part of my greed?" JongHyun conveys a feeling of reaching ceaselessly for someone or something that is so far away that it feels greedy to even attempt to reach. Despite wanting to give up, he portrays himself to be continuously fighting that urge because of the love he is motivated by. The imagery of the words "warmly and brightly" not only describes the moon and the way it looked on the night of June 23rd, 2013, but the way JongHyun views Shawols and the feelings he has in relation to them. JongHyun symbolically describes the relationship between SHINee and the SHINee World in the song ‘Selene 6.23’. He opens the song, "Look at my eyes, I whisper alone as I look at you from far away. Just smile for me once, I can endure it just by seeing your face." Continuing into the second verse, he says that he "can throw away everything and run to you." He questions, "since when did I start being with you? from the moment I opened my eyes and started to breathe. I was with you every night, but I can't approach you." He describes a feeling of foolishness and hopelessness when he writes, "I shout out loud, I get angry but it’s no use. I'm just one out of the many people that pass by you." JongHyun describes a fear of loss, feelings of hopelessness, lack of self-esteem, and a reflection on the lifelong relationship which is shown to develop through the progression of the song. The moon is used as a metaphor for JongHyun's feelings concerning the shinee world, making this song special to not only Shawols but to the members. It conveys the feelings of love on both sides of the relationship and creates an unbreakable bond between the two groups, represented by the moon and the songwriter. Contrary to the symbolism that this song conveys, JongHyun emphasizes that it is not meant to describe an unbearable distance between Shawol and SHINee. The song isn't a sad song about his distance from SHINee world, rather a song he "wrote looking at the moon, not at you all [Shawols]," in his words. You know, I think this is my favourite SHINee song. Because, the way I see it, since I became a shawol because I checked them out after hearing about Jonghyun's deat, I have been trying to reach Jonghyun, but because I was not a fan before that day, I feel like I don't deserve to say I miss him and be sad? So I try my hardest to reach him, to call for him, but I can't. And I wish I had been here earlier and I wish I did not feel bad about crying about it, but it's a weird and unexplainable feeling. LMAO at the LA concert for Shinee World the fans were supposed to sing this to them after they performed Everybody but legit no one knew this song so we just sat in the darkness for like 5 mins clueless. I felt so bad though.
