I can tell you really love being a Dietitian- Keep up the good work & I hope your passion only continues to grow as you progress in your career! I would add a couple of Bad/Ugly: 1. For the amount of schooling & knowledge we are required to have, we could stand to get paid a little better, especially when compared to other Allied Health Professions. 2. That whole internship Match thing... Enough said! 3. Low Albumin Consults!!! Best wishes to ya!

As someone who is really interested in a healthy holistic lifestyle, i was really thinking about becoming an rd, but i know that an rd major will not cover LIFE for real , like exercise and living as a whole , which is the approach I believe in instead of recommending processed jello . But the problem with the more natural or holistic route is the certification, and that alternative medicine in general is considered "quack" but i still think is has some right to it , but its hard to choose and to be involved in this kind of dilemma between natural health advocates and dietitians and drs etc.. I believe that having a healthy lifestyle and being as close to nature as possible is the way to go to maybe help heal a lot of problems Im a high school graduate and still dont really know what i want to do, and if it is worth it, and do i want to pursue it :/ and if going into becoming and rd or for example study holistic nutrition online is the right thing to do, or maybe become a naturopath ?.. i hope you can help me if you can ❤️ thanks for the video

Sarah Montgomery thanks for your reply, i am aware of the importance of following a scientific method, but the fact that many things might work but are not scientifically proven or they are not backed up with a lot of money for research makes me wonder if they might really work! I guess the only option i have is go take the degree and also try to explore as much as. Possible in the holistic/natural field, as im afraid that i would be preaching something dangerous to people, but i can see that a lot of things do work but are not proven by science, let us not forget the money factor

F Ghu hi! I can very much relate to what you are saying! Currently, I am a high school senior and am very interested in the holistic lifestyle. I do feel a attachment to nature and advocate whole foods . However, dietetics is very focused on the standardized western diet which I am not particularly into. I am very confused as to what I should do. I want to cure people with nature remedies and Whole Foods but am confused as to whether I should become a registered dietician first and then gear my studies toward holistic health. I would love to hear what you have to say about it because I feel like I can really relate to your situation.

I would look up Katie Reines KZbin channel, she's a vegan dietitian. And also look up videos by Brenda Davis, she also promotes a plant based lifestyle and has books out. I feel like a vegan lifestyle, properly done, goes hand in hand with holistic nutrition. Hopefully you enjoy their pages! They stay within the guidelines while providing factual information.
@ml56846 жыл бұрын
Am in the same boat as well. I am more geared towards living close to nature and eating whole foods, basically a whole holistic approach to healing. i like the science of dietetics in relation to our bodies. perhaps maybe a holistic doctor degree in combination with a human physiology degree will help us understand our bodies more and how they react to different elements in nature and then we can advise holistic methods, etc. if you get my drift.
@veggievendetta1316 жыл бұрын
Hello all! I may be a little late to the game, but I think I may have some unique insight into this topic. In terms of my career goals, I follow a vegan diet and am very passionate about using plant based nutrition as an alternative to medication and certain invasive procedures, specifically for cardiovascular disease, so I am very with you on the alternative healthcare thing. After getting my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry (with the hopes of going into medical research into these topics) I realized I wanted to go into patient care, and I had considered becoming a naturopathic doctor or getting a certification in holistic nutrition. But here's the rub: There is not as much credibility in these degrees among the general population. And along with that, many of those programs are not as scientifically rigorous and dont teach you critically important skills that you need to evaluate research and literature which is SOOOOOOO crucial in the field of nutrition because of the insane amount of industry funded garbage studies that are published regularly. If there is one thing I have learned in my education it is to NEVER take a nutritional study at face value without taking a hard look at the methods and statistics section of the paper. But back to credibility: I wanted to help people who might not be predisposed to seeking out alternative therapies. I wanted to help bring this mindset for holistic healthcare into the mainstream and not just in fringe wellness centers where I am only helping well-off privileged white hippies. And most importantly I wanted to be in a position to influence other practitioners and the profession at large. To do these things you NEED the legitimacy of the credentials. In interacting with people with these alternative certifications, even before getting my master's degree in nutrition, I could refute most of what they said with my background in biochemsitry and my understanding of current literature. In my mind that is a serious problem for the credibility of the alternative health movement even if it produces good results from a health standpoint. And now that I have a Master's degree in the topic and will be starting a dietetic internship shortly, I have a grasp of human metabolism and the field of nutritional research in general to defend my position and beliefs about nutrition to other experts in the field. I have the knowledge to be able to thoroughly explain why certain diet trends can be harmful. I can review literature and know what is a good study and what is a bad study--which is ESPECIALLY important nowadays because splashy research gets spread quickly on mass media and a lot of it is garbage. My point is, that with a formal education, I have been able to get the complete picture of the field which will enable me to make changes and be heard. I could not get this and would not be listened to if I had a certification. I also would not be able to work with the populations who need this kind of education the most if I did not have a formal education. There is a lot of power in getting experience on all sides of the spectrum. It makes you more balanced. It gives you more exposure. And it makes you more convincing. And let me tell you, there are certain things that I used to believe in in the alternative wellness field that I no longer have any faith in because of my education. Likewise, there is a LOT in the dietetic standard practice that I don't agree with too. And now I am educated enough to try to push for changes on a larger scale. I suppose my point is, if you get an RD, there is nothing stopping you from practicing holistic nutrition, and it will make you a better practitioner too. But if you go for the certification it could limit you. I have met LOTS of RD's who work in the alternative arena. I also would not recommend doing anything online because if there is anything I've learned being in this field, it's all about who you know and what extra experiences you can get, and you just cant make connections through an online program. I hope this helps!

I love the profession to be honest. I hope I did not convey that I regretted becoming a dietitian. It is a very versatile field. You can be a supermarket RD, sports RD, clinical RD, nutrition manager, own your own business, do research, write books/papers,teach, and the list goes on. I think the best types of RD are those who couple their expertise with something else (ie: diabetes educator, MBA, journalism). I would recommend for you to google more about the profession and even attend conferences. This will give you a lot of insight. (www.eatright.org is a good beginning)

Hey Kim i have a few questions! 1) do you have any advice for people like me who wants to become a dietitian? 2) How do you think the job outlook is? Do you think that in the next few years, there will be a higher need for clinical dietitians(what i would like to become)? 3) What is the ratio of male to female dietitians? I see alot of women dietitians and was wondering if men can thrive too and if being a male dietitian is a good thing?
@KimRoseDietitian8 жыл бұрын
Hey Josh: I'm not going to answer your Q in order. Questions 2 + 3 are pretty tough for me to answer seeing I do not know what the future holds (I think the profession personally speaking is doing good...getting a lot more recognition) nor am I fully aware o the male to female ratio. To answer the 2nd part of Q 3...YES males thrive in the profession. Not only are guys a scarce commodity, but they are very passionate + committed dietitians. One guy-titian here on youtube is @Eatrightguy..check him out when you get a chance. To answer Q 1 watch my video about how to become a dietitian. You'll get the 411. Hope this helps...

I actually have my BS in another field, have been out of school for ages/decades (LOL), live in NC, but that process regarding Internships concern me especially if I am already settled. The question comes to mind, will I have to move? Can I find an accredited program locally? Thanks again & abundant blessings to you!!!

Thank you so much for your response, and you are most welcome. I was wondering how I could go about researching/locating accredited schools in the state of NC? Another question, do you find that completing Internships could be a bit discouraging to some people being that the process is structured somewhat different? You may have shared this on a video I have yet to view, but how long did it take you to gain employment after schooling/Internships? Was it a smooth transition? My last question ... have you ever thought about becoming a Naturopathic MD? I only ask that because of its discipline and it's natural healing aide to patients/clients as well. Well, thanks for reading my short novel in advance & have a wonderful day!
@KimRoseDietitian7 жыл бұрын
1. Click here for schools with internships attached. www.eatrightpro.org/resources/acend/accredited-programs 2. I do not find that the internship process is discouraging related to the structure. The stress is what's discouraging. 3. I was actually employed before I finished my internship (video coming soon lol). 4. Naturopathic MD--no, not at this time.

Oh, thank you so much for the resource regarding the schools w/internships...woowhooo!!! I'm going to view it as soon as I finish responding to you :-). About the internship process, well, I can understand it being stressful...phew that's certainly much better than getting discouraged due to fretting if you will be picked for your particular location & the wait and such. About the employment - wonderful ... will be looking forward to that video as well ... :-) Okay, well I'm going to get to gettin with that link and I really appreciate all the information and your speedy response. @KimRoseDietitian8 жыл бұрын
I'm happy for you Kayleen. Chemistry can be challenging. 1. Go to your professors office hours...ALL OF THEM. Let your professor see that you are trying. This is what I did for my hard classes. I would always introduce my self (first and last name...every office hour...make a difference when it comes to the final grade), ask tips, ask him/her to reteach a point you did not understand in class. 2. Re-write your notes immediately after class. I had 2 journals for chemistry. One in which I took lecture notes and the other in which I re-wrote everything neatly 3. Bring a recorder to the class and record the lecture 4. Find the smart kid and become BFF 5. Study a little EVERY DAY...craming does not help in chemistry

Great Q Cass!! Yes, one said that a lot of her diabetic patients were on the incorrect dose of diabetes medications/insulin and as a dietitian she had no power to change the medication so she became a PA. The second dietitian told me she did not see the importance of the profession. I guess she did not seek to expand her wings in the field and felt like she was in a dead-end career which is not true at all.
