Thanks Coach! I don't believe I've ever transitioned from gift wrap to spider web or the other way, but I do hold them as you showed, not realizing it was easy to escape if held wrong. It just seemed to feel right.

This is the same methodology for an Americana while hugging the head correct? I was taught 2 thumbs -> 1 thumb -> no thumbs.
@TeachMeGrappling5 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean? On most Americanas, I don’t use thumbs.
@TheDanielmeeks5 жыл бұрын
TeachMeGrappling Coach Brian oh right. Well I mean when you have the neck hug and you pass off the pinned arm to the one hugging the neck you maintain a four finger grip(thumb in/c-clamp) with both. When you get your initial lock up of the Americana you switch to a no thumb grip(monkey grip). When you loop the head you transition to no a thumb grip as well.

Why though? What is it that makes the thumb grip weaker for one but not the other position? Is it because the direction he has to move his arm in order to escape changes?
@TeachMeGrappling5 жыл бұрын
The two positions are different. The giftwrap position needs the thumb because of the wrist roll escape. There is no wrist rolling out of the Kimura grip. Why they are different has to do with the head being encircled or not. The head gets “in the way” during the giftwrap position for the Kimura style control. Try it out and you will see.

TeachMeGrappling Coach Brian ahhh, okay, yes, that makes sense! Gonna ask my coach to work on it next sesh!
@AZTigerMMA5 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t that make perfect timing for him to go ahead and straighten his arm out and you taking on more that point?

An arm that escapes the grip is less controlled.

If I created a chance to break away, what would I do next?
@TeachMeGrappling5 жыл бұрын
For simplicity, your arm is less controlled. Armbar escapes are more possible.
