A very generous gentleman mailed this pair of Allen Edmonds to us several months ago and requested that we donate them to a charity. We couldn't let these shoes leave our shop looking like they did, so we decided to give them a little restoration job before sending these off for another life. After a bit of a makeover, these Allen Edmonds look almost brand new. Time for another refurbishment.

Some other reasons for resoling/revamping shoes: - Support local businesses - Sustainable shopping (so you don't keep buying leather shoes) - Investing in high quality shoes means also gives you the purpose to look after them properly. Great work! I have learnt a lot from your channel :)

Me too. I drove a valet van for 30 years picking up people's dry cleaning and delivering back. Many of those people sent their shoes in as we had a shoe service also but I never knew the nuts and bolts of what went into revamping shoes just that I would drop them off in bad condition and pick them up and they looked like brand new shoes now I know what goes into the revamp. It's fascinating to watch these guys

It's all about your initial investment into a great shoe that should last. The value is realized with everyday or casual wear leading up to resoles. As a child I had to wear corrective shoes and get them resoled by my neighborhood cobbler. It's never about being able to go buy a new pair rather the history in the wear and its feel.

I found some vintage cap toes from Paris a couple of years ago at a thrift store. They were in decent shape, but definitely needed new soles. Straightforward resole for about $60. I'll be wearing them for years! My local cobbler was "the kid" 50 years ago when I first visited his shop. Now he's training his niece to take over so he can retire. Nice work. You spend $400 on a pair of Red Wings ... you wear out the sole in about 1 year. The uppers are in great condition... I will happily pay $100 for a quality resole rather than spending $400 and trashing perfectly fine leather (that is already broke-in and custom shaped by my foot).

Totally agree, that’s the reason to buy quality shoes rather than cheap ones. But how could you possibly wear out the sole in one year? Did you wear them everyday and always walk on rough surfaces? My boots generally won’t need resole at least after four or five years. But I usually have 3 pairs to interchange.

I really need to find a place to re welt my shoes in the future. I have a nice pair of vintage shoes, made here in canada. They have, i think, a cemented sole. But the upper is a rare and difficult to find colour in high quality calfskin. They dont have a GYW so they may in fact be hidden blake stitch. I havent had to resole them since picking them up this past winter, they were almost never worn but were in an estate sale, stores away. The seller had conditioned them, and i spent a couple weeks adding a small amount of renovateur to help the old leather rehydrate. It had no cracks, next to no creasing, they were cared for well with very few wears but had gotten a little dry. Successfully uncracked and without awkward overstretching after all the creams, but that welt, one day, it will need to be replaced. Have yet to find a local cobbler who would do it. The one who would have, is very old, in his late 80s and says he just doesn't have it in him to do it anymore 😂

I love having my shoes re-soled rather than buying new. I will buy old Birkenstocks cheap (my feet love them) and have them re-soled. When I had horses and wore boots often, I had my boots resoled until they couldn't be re-soled any longer.

Shoe cobblers are getting to be like hens teeth. Also, some of the folks acting like cobblers think that gluing stuff together is proper shoe repair. The last guy I used, he retired. The poor guy was 75. He said he had had enough. Kids do not want to learn either. He said he went to high schools telling the administrators and counselors to send him a student and he would teach them and when he retired he would help get them going. I have noticed a resurgence in welted boots and shoes. Eventually, that might force the trade to revive. I want to hope so. I use a saddle maker now. He is getting more boots and shoes and getting better. He does fine on cowboy boots, but fine shoes? Not so much. Thanks for the video. I always enjoy the work you fellows do. Also, I like the idea of trying to help someone get a decent pair of shoes. That is very nice.

Great video. Listening to your explanation about resoling shoes I can see why people keep the old shoes and resole them. Here in Canada a pair of Allen Edmonds dress shoes start at $560 CDN, US prices start at $400 US. I can see why a person would rather spend $250 to get an excellent resole on shoes that are broken in to the owners feet (assuming the uppers are in great shape) than over $400 for a new pair that need to be broken in. Keep up the interesting videos.

-They don’t look great, they look pristine 🌞. - And yes you can throw them away, but it depends on the individual and how much he or she loves and what the pair means to them. - it’s all about if the shoe is an investment and worth keeping, personally if you loved the shoe initially and you regularly use Saphir products and sole protectors for your leather soles or just a strong Dainite sole you should not go thru them frequently or at all, again it all depends on the wear frequency too. -Thanks Again Heath-

Speaking of price, I have a pair of boots that I think can be resoled as it looks like a mix of blake stitch and good year welt. I think I have the terms right. Blake stitch being the stitch on the inside that goes through the footbed and midsole and this pair looks like it also has a good year welt that goes through the midsole and the welt. They are Mexican made but can not find anything about them online but can find them for sale on ebay. They are good boots so would love to get them resoled.

Allen Edmonds... I have a love/hate relationship with them. I love their shoes. I love that I can find a quality pair of shoes in a 15D. I love that I can get them for a reasonable price. I hate that SOMETIMES, their sales are so good, that I just can't pass up the deal offered. For example, I pair of Hamilton dress boots with Dainites for $230.00 is awesome. And... two pairs of cedar shoe trees for $50 as well! Yes, they're on the way. Nice repair on these fine ol' kicks. Someone's going to end up with a good pair of shoes.

I love watching you Guys fixing, upgrading shoes. My Wife doesn't get why I like it. She thinks a bloke that fixes coffee machines for a living loves F1 motor racing and DJ's some weekends has strange tastes.... (That's probably why she loves me) Anyway this vid was another great one... Keep up the good work.

I personally don't care about the cost. Shoes have a sentimental meaning to me, especially ones that have been passed down from Grandparents. I Also Love J.R. Soles. I think they're the classiest of them. These shoes were a Huge improvement and Classy

If you find a very comfy shoe that gives yoy just enough space in the foot. Especially if you are a person with picky feet, you want to keeo those shoes for as long as you can... i have a pair i got from a thrift store that are hi end shoe... but it needs to have the stitching redone because its starting to fray there.

Could you explain how that cork works...does it air-dry, does the heat activate the glue in it.?..when it's set, I can see that the sole glues onto it, so it must be pretty solid!

Beautiful job on a beautiful pair of shoes - well, after the restauration. I know that many people swear by the black captoe oxford as the "most useful" shoe, but I will argue that a dark brown or oxblood quarter brogue derby will be the most versatile and usable shoe for more than 95% of men out there. It can be easily dressed down to go with a pair of jeans and a shirt but will also not look out of place with a three piece charcoal flannel or even a doble breasted nave pinstripe suit. Everybody who does not attend executive board meetings and/or black-/white tie events for a living should own these shoes before any other pair.
