Considering how intelligent and long-lived elephants are, and the fact they aren't domesticated to be house pets, it's hard for me to think of an elephant as a "pet" and having an "owner".

An elephant walks into a hospital. The nurse says 'What can I get you?' Elephant says 'My caretaker, I want him to be better again, can you do that for me?' Nurse says 'I'm sorry but he's not going to make it. We're going to put him down. The best thing you can do for him is to stay by his side.' Elephant holds his caretaker's hands with his nose and in his final moments, the caretaker says 'Thank you for being there for me.' Elephant says 'Baka!'
