Malaysians are very generous, nobody treated me free lunch or dinner during my annual holiday trip to Japan before pandemic. Japanese are generally friendly but very cautious and timid to foreigners. Another probable reason is also because of language barriers as most Japanese don't speak foreign languages.

I think Laksam is the original and uniquely Malay palate cuisine (fish, coconut, glutinous rice flour) where other Laksa are more Chinese ethnic oriented in origin since there's the use of noodles and vermicelli, which was introduced in Malay cuisine via Peranakan.

Laksam name is used because to diffentiate with laksa (Kelantanese version) which using same sauce (but some shop using pinkish sause) but different noodle. In Kelantan, Laksam is called Lakse and Kelantan Laksa is called Lakso.

Laksam is a Kelantanese version of laksa. Uses fish broth with a pinch of very spicy chilly sambal. The Chinese community have the same thing too, and it is called Chee Cheong Fun normally can be found from Yong Tau Fu stalls as well, just with different kind of sauce & servings... Kuew Teow can be thought as it siblings as well.. hehe Roti Tampal is a normal Roti Canai Kosong but with a sunny side egg stick to it. Tampal means to stick/paste. In some part of northern states, it is called Roti Plaster... hehe Roti Canai with egg has many variations. Roti Tampal/Plaster Roti Telur (egg inside) Roti Jantan (2 sunny side eggs. jantan means male - you guess why it is called Jantan.. hihi) Roti Sarang Burung (sarang burung means bird's nest. uses 2 eggs with some minced meat/chicken) Roti Tsunami (an upgraded version of Roti Banjir. Banjir means flood so it is flooded with curry. Tsunami added half-boiled egg into the flood..hee)

aksa and laksam is just to differentiate between those 2. because both use rice noodle and fish broth. the differences are the noodle size, broth cooking style ( one use coconut mild one use shrimp past and chili paste ) and laksa come from north, laksam come from east. and we already have Malaysian version of mochi, it is called 'kuih kuaci'. you chould try it someday. usually people sell in the morning or night market

Laksam is Kelantanese food and you can find it everywhere in Kelantanese restaurants. Next 2 weeks will be Muslim Ramadhan season, it's a fasting month for Muslims and there would have bazaar (food festival) everywhere from 4pm to 8pm that sells many types of food for Muslim to break their fast. It is actually the best time to travel to Malaysia especially if you want to make a food tour 😁

Good video Kaz.. By the way, like you said you want to improve yourself so I suggest you should learn some basic Malay words and sentences slowly so that it is easier for you to communicate with some old people and easier for most of Old Malaysian people that do not really fluent in english to have mutual understanding with you. As the time goes by you would easily master it. For example, when you want to pay you say “Kak/Bang berapa semuanya?” = Neesan/Niisan zenbu ikuradesuka? ; when you want to praise the foods to the seller you say “makanannya sedap sekali” = tabemono wa mecha oishii; learn numbers in Malay like 1(satu), 2(dua), 3(tiga), 4(empat), 5(lima), 6(enam), 7(tujuh), 8(lapan), 9(sembilan), 10(sepuluh) etc. ini=kore, itu=sore, apa=nani, terima kasih=arigato gozaimasu, makan, minum, teh tarik, milo tarik, milo ais, teh o ais and many more easy peasy words. Maybe you can make a close malay friend to help you for this purpose. Kudos!

In Kelantan/Terengganu (east coast) both laksa and laksam are eaten with same broth. Probably that’s why the name is similar. Each state has different version of laksa btw. But apart from laksa beras and kuah putih (the one you eat here) east coast also has laksa gandum and kuah masak (red color).. I love laksam especially the one made by my mother. I just eat the laksam and broth.. no need veggie or chilli..

Kaz, Malaysia are mostly welcoming even to their fellow Malaysian. Laksa (white noodle type) and Laksam differs by shape (the latter is thicker than the former) Originally the soup is different but both may be a little sour and sweet. Laksam is a delicacy from my hometown, Kelantan and its funny that you're at a Kelantan Restaurant Tuu Dok Ko 1488 (Tuu Dok Ko means "That's it" or "That's him/her" or "That's the place" (with exclamation !! LOL ) which is actually in Gombak Area. The number however a little related to Feng Shui (most Kelantanese do have Chinese & Siamese blood somewhere in their veins - like me LOL) Malaysians are also generous - you'll be surprised that most first time experience will get it free of charge 🙂 - All to make your day and your first experience - memorable. The next time, you should cross using the pedestrian bridge to visit Sri Gombak...you';re going to like it.
