+Ahmed Faraz At first I didn't understood the tantrums neither, but the more I think about them I think it contributes to the overall character, he is just training, I expect him to become different moving on, and the overall emotional aspect of him will eventually make him more interesting.

+Ahmed Faraz That's kind of the point. He's a terrible SIth lord, and it's just interesting how different he is from usual Star Wars villains. He's a whiny petulant teenager with a lot of anger issues, but he also has all this power. There's so much room for growth in either direction as well.
@Sebastian4216663
@Sebastian4216663 8 жыл бұрын
+Ahmed Faraz lol he does look very underwhelming without the helmet, but I wanna believe that was the intended effect, like the line of Han Solo saying he didn't needed the helmet, like mocking him and telling him that he is just a dumb kid who is confused. I have, pun intended, hope for the character, but if in episode 8 I don't see a turn I'm gonna be seriously disappointed.

I feel it's story is a condensed version of the original trilogy. The first act is very much like Star Wars, a droid, a desert planet, & a Falcon escape. The second act is Empire, we meet a wise elder, have a force vision, a torture scene, & a powerful moment on a bridge over a large chasm. The third act is Jedi, we get a team deactivating/blowing up a shield, X-Wing action, & an intense, emotional lightsaber battle. Though one can argue that Jedi is a remake of Star Wars, Force Awakens is the entire original trilogy in 2 hours, & I'm 100% okay with that.
@BryonLape

+Indra Hatton That's one of several reasons I keep calling this movie a soft reboot along the lines of Battlestar Galatica.

+Indra Hatton Exactly. They canabilzed the entire original trilogy for this film. I have this image of them all in a meeting and JJ being like "guys, I have all these great, original ideas for episodes 8 and 9... but we have to set it up with episode 7 and to do that we'll have to just rehash all the previous movies. that cool?"
@jordanarellano455
@jordanarellano455 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd say they changed it enough to be it's own thing.
@IndraHatton
@IndraHatton 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Loupe I believe that a rehash of the original trilogy was the intention for Episode 7, even before Abrams came onto the movie. They needed to bring old fans of Star Wars back (through nostalgia for the old stories) & introduce new characters. If you look at Abrams' movies, he mainly works within franchises and reuses old ideas. Even Super 8, an original project, takes major elements from classic Spielberg movies. This is probably why Kathleen Kennedy picked Abrams for The Force Awakens, he has a lot of experience taking classic stories and placing new interesting characters within them.
@yupidoda
@yupidoda 8 жыл бұрын
+Indra Hatton That's actually a very good way of looking at the film. I can definitely agree that the intention was to bring the fan base back in with familiar elements. Can't wait to see where they take the story now!

So much of character buildup for Kylo Ren. I looked up to Kylo Ren till he unmasked himself. His face was quite dissapointing. And the tantrum he was throwing didn't help him being people's favourite either. I would rate him below General Grevious. I had so much of hope on Kylo Ren.

Rey is definitely Lukes daughter, considering han never recognised who she was but knew who kylo (ben) was, makes me think they will make rey lukes daughter. Daisy Ridley was a fucking badass in the movie, we all cheered in the theatre when she used the force to get the lightsaber. I hope in EP VIII she modifies her staff and turns it into a double lightsaber
@IndraHatton
@IndraHatton 8 жыл бұрын
+AshesAriseTW Loved the moment Rey grabbed the lightsaber, string stuff. She has to be Luke's daughter. You can almost read it in Luke's eyes at the end. I liked Greg's idea of Rey having her memories suppressed or something, I'm still rather confused as to why she was left on Jakku though.

+AshesAriseTW I am not so sure. Leia could have been pregnant when Han left and he never met her. And Jedi's are not supposed to fall in love and get married. That would be giving into your emotion, very unjedi like. When she saw Leia there was definitely something there like they knew each other before. I am teetering both ways right now but one thing is certain, she did get the force through her blood line for sure.
@IndraHatton
@IndraHatton 8 жыл бұрын
+Eric Seidl But Leia and Rey has some poignant moments after the battle at the end, you'd think she'd tell Rey there & I don't think Leia would send another one of her children to Luke after what happened to Kylo. Luke can fall in love and such etc. as Yoda & Obi Wan never mentioned it to Luke. Also, I feel that the story arc of the Jedi is for them to be destroyed and rebuild (by Luke) as their practices & attitudes in the prequels were misguided.
@taylorewalters

"bitching about the prequels is done!" then stop bitching about them. as a fan of the prequels, I wish people would just shut the fuck up about how awful they are. I understand every fan is allowed their opinion, but enough is enough. it's been over a decade of this bullshit & I hate how every time I tell people I genuinely enjoy the prequels, they call me ridiculous & try to convince me otherwise. I get it; you don't like them, but I do so please just shhhhhh.

+Tedakin For myself I wanted to think of it like this, that she might either be a undercover rebellion agent or she might be unsure about the first order aswell. She might also just be someone who is badass but has never actually witnessed war. I have a feeling she will turn on the first order aswell or she might change her attitude completely and try to hunt the rebels down. I think they wanted to show her so pathedic to give in the next movies her a reason to be badass. I hope at least.

My personal favorite character was Finn, especially when he fights Kylo Ren, sure he loses but still, he is probably one of the only people in the entire Star Wars universe to fight what is basically a Sith Lord with a LightSaber without being force sensitive then actually hurt the guy and live.

Plus the parallels between Kylo Ren and Finn, one raised by the light side the other by the dark side, both end up on the opposite side of what they knew, both are traitors in their own right, one knows his family while the other one doesn't, etc.

+Terry King As much as I like Rey I feel like they gave her too much (if it makes sense), like not only is she a jedi (and learns to control the force way too quickly) and gets Anakins lightsaber but she also gets the Millenium Falcon and Han approves of her, mean I get she is the the main focus of this story but that's a bit much, at keast in my opinion but like I said the parallels between Finn and Kylo Ren were the more interesting parts for me and am curious if they will (hopefully) build on it and make episode 8 a Finn centric movie where we learn more about him.

My theory, Kylo is like 10 years older than Rey, He was with Luke training along with the other young lings, Rey is Luke's daughter and she was training as well but since she was so young she wasn't doing the harder things with the older kids. Supreme leader Snoke shows up and pretends to want to help train the young lings and slowly starts converting Kylo and the others to the dark side which later on forms the Knights of Ren, when Luke finds out he fights Snoke and that is why he has the massive scar on his face, but Kylo and the other young lings defend Snoke and since Luke doesn't want to be like Vader he stops himself and runs away, he later finds Rey hiding since she wasn't with the older kids, he runs away with her, wipes her memory (Her earliest memory is when she is dropped off and the ship leaves) and drops her off in a desert planet to be safe. He entrusts Lor San Tekka to watch over her from a distance w/o involving himself and lets him have his final destination in case shit hits the fan he can find him. Since the First Order is getting out of control he gives the piece to the resistance so they can get Luke back.
@callardgreens20

I think the old man killed by Kylo in the first couple minutes (correct me if he has a reputation) was left on Jakku to keep Rey in the dark about her past. He was an old jedi. Once he died and she got farther from jakku, she began to realize her powers. And perhaps R2D2 was revived from no where because Rey was in the vicinity. Lukes direct blood. Meaning that Luke set R2 (him setting his hand on R2 in the flash back, being his goodbye to R2) to revive if his daughter ever came in to close range of R2, because he knew if she ever found R2, she would be off of jakku, and on her path to discovering the force. AND, if that happened, she would HAVE to find Luke to ensure she came to the Light side instead of being persuaded by the dark side (tried by Kylo Ren) to ensure another vader never exists. Maybe? Comments?

The people complaining that it's too similar to A New Hope(it called back to all three orig trig) just don't get it, and can't or won't get it. I'm not saying that Abram's hands were tied, but he had one real job, more important than all others: make up for the prequels. The last Star Wars movie to come out was Revenge of the Sith, not Return of the Jedi, and while RotS was the best of the prequels, it is infinitely inferior to Return of the Jedi. We needed this movie to show the new generation what was so special about the original movies. We needed this movie as an apology and an affirmation. It definitely wasn't the time to be getting anymore experimental with Star Wars than they already were, though I think it perfectly sets up the rest of the new trig to try some very cool things. Truly, it's a shitty argument anyways. Stories get retold all the time. It doesn't matter if we've seen it before, it only matters is whether it works and the movie is good. It's not perfect, but it's a damn good film.

You guys need to read the Force Awakens book if you're wanting more exposition and answers to the motives of the characters and their thoughts during all the action. It's an amazing epic story, especially the second half. I understand the characters, the backgrounds and their motives much better after reading the book. As for why Ren freaks out about the girl. It says in the book that there was some kind of prophecy or premonition that a girl would be "the one" and the overlord Sith underestimated her.

As an objective look, Force Awakens IS the best Star Wars film as far as quality. The originals had a ton of problems that a lot of adults gloss over do to nostalgia. When everyone watches star wars, you are a kid, so you don't recognize the issues, but as an adult who never saw them as a kid, I can definitely say Force Awakens is the best. Obviously the effects are better (and that isn't something I can fault the originals for), but the big things are story, acting and quality. The originals, had pretty terrible acting. Listen to lines from Leia or Luke from the original on a soundboard, and they sound as stupid as Jar Jar out of context. Finn and Rey's actors in this film were arguably some of the best in the entire universe. Even Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron were pretty high tier. As for writing, I think Force Awakens did a better job at telling a good story and balancing the perfect amount of drama, action and nostalgia. It's a film that will be enjoyed by children, but could be complex enough to be watched as an adult. The originals, unless you watched them as a kid, you can't really watch them as an adult. They are far too cheesy, cartoony and not very good compared to general movie characteristics. If Star Wars was reviewed in modern day, it might get about a 75-82, while the new one would probably get a good 95. The reason they are acclaimed is the instant "nostalgia" boost that brings them up to absurd things like 99s.
@NicholasLionRider
@NicholasLionRider 8 жыл бұрын
***** The cinematography was great in this. The key to cinematography is having nearly every scene be able to be framed and hang on a wall and look nice, which this did perfectly. The originals I couldn't say the same for. Not to mention the powerpoint transitions. And the "horrible plot" is New Hope...with a few alterations so there's that. Literally all your flaws describe 4, 5, and 6 better than Force Awakens. As they were cheaper, lower budget, pretty bad acting, mediocre set design, and the same story.

Yso serious?85 Again, objectively. I didn't watch the films as a kid, so I can't see what they were like with childlike eyes. If you watched the originals like I did with the notions of proper film making ingrained in your head (the stuff that ruins movies like Star Wars), you realize they aren't as good as they are made out to be. Star Wars is made and reviewed by children of every decade that eventually grow up and still get excited about them, like children. Force Awakens, was my "first" star wars, and objectively, it's similar to Marvel, it can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike (and past star wars fans). The old ones, its sorta, you only like it if you were a fan from the start or a kid.

+Nicholas LionRider You want to watch Star Wars stuff that's good? Go watch the Clone Wars series. That series blows The Force Awakens out of the park. Also, the hollowness in how they kill off an entire planetary system was so weak and the tired, boring Nazi iconography. If you think that's excellent film making then you have a lot more films you need to watch.
@TheCrimsonC0met

+umiluv Clone Wars blows. Seriously, they needlessly added characters in to entertain children. NONE of the events of that series are significant. Why the fuck did Anakin need an apprentice? Why did we need to insert an entire series of episodes based on Anakin seeing his future? WHY DID WE NEED TO SEE DARTH MAUL COME BACK AND WHINE LIKE A BITCH!? Seriously, the Clone Wars just messes things up regardless of how good you think it is. The Force Awakens does something that the prequels or CW never did- BE GOOD. The prequels all had terrible writing and acting, on top of a cringe- worthy amount of CGI.

What movie were you guys watching? I saw this at the Chinese theater last night. The movie was a disaster! Over time it will be remembered like the pre-equals. Hard to believe JJ was so lost for ideas he basically remade a poor version of the original; plot point by plot point! The space scenes looked fake. The ships looked like models; without proper balance of inertia or braking. Wearing an unnecessary mask, Kylo Ren is a sniveling wimp who gets beaten by a girl who has no experience with a light sabre! Like others, the emperor-like character is totally CGI, looking and moving completely unnatural! The dialog between Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher is forced, unnatural and unnecessary. The cuteness of Balls (BB-8) is not enough to hold this movie together. Their quest for and use of “the map” made the universe seem finite and small and easily navigatable. All journeys were almost instant and unrealistic. We lose concern for the characters and their plight. The movie was diverse, humorous at times and empowering toward women, but an ultimate failure.

Who are the Knights of Ren? Who is Hux? What exactly made Ben Solo fall to the dark side? Why was Finn the first stormtrooper to ever break out of mind control? How did Maz Kanata come to have Anakin and Lukes lightsaber? We are left with nothing but our imagination at the end of this movie. This films purpose was to set up the rest of the trilogy and try to recapture the essence of the original Star Wars films. I can understand people being upset but what else did you want or expect this movie to be about? This is just the starting point.

My roommate hadn't watched any of the Star Wars movies. So last week we sat down and watched all six of them in chronological order. By the end of all the movies and after much discussion he still thinks episode 1-3 where the better half of the franchise. Episodes 4-6 where great but I don't under value what 1-3 did for the franchise ( except jar jar) . I think people need to stop looking at those movies as if they didn't happens and where a flop because what they set out to do was accomplished. Those movies created an athmospere or a bigger Galaxy !! They established order, gave insight to the Jedi and their order and made a great way of how the fall of the republic leads to the empires rule. Episodes 4-6 are an amazing adventure and fight between good and evil but never do this. It always just seems like there are 2 sides of the coin and it's only the Rebels and the empire in this universe there is no middle ground. People need to go back and watch all the movies with fresh eyes.

It wasn't until about 3-4 years ago when all the casual watchers who had enjoyed it had moved on that you anal people came out of the woodwork and started complaining about stuff that doesnt make any sense to complain about. "JarJar was so bad" - Prequel Jarjar was better than originals C3PO "The cgi was bad" - The cgi was objectively good, was groundbreaking for the time and still holds up today. Who complains about cgi in movies anyway!? "Midiclorians ruined everything" - sorry your fanfics were debunked deal with it. Question: why is Luke so important? So he disappeared. Why does Kylo NEED to find him (at the time The First Order is taking over)? Why do the resistance need to find him? In ANH it's all about the Death Star plans and it's possible weakness. There is a clear need there for both sides. But what is the dramatic need to find Luke. How is this one Jedi (who ran away) such a threat, big enough to base the spine of this entire movie on? Anyone?

In my head cannon midichlorians were just a theory that Qui-gon believed in, but not absolute fact. Hence he's the only Jedi that ever mentions it. During the height of the republic its very possible there was scientific research being done into the force and its very possible midis were simply a detectable byproduct of the force and not their source. Maz's explanation of the force is more in line with Yoda's so there's really no need to retcon anything, Qui-gon was simply mistaken.

BBEEAANN as i explained. its quite possible midichlorians are something that are simply attracted to force users and can be used to detect someone's affinity to the force. correlation is not causation. The OT and PT conflict on a number of issues including the force. Either we consider one is simply wrong or there is unknown information that can account for both being correct. In general I consider Yoda a more reliable authority on the force than Qui-gon.
@baigandinel7956
@baigandinel7956 8 жыл бұрын
+Kaleiohu Lee OK, disbelieve Midichlorians. The plot can still make sense. Just think to yourself, "the Force is strong with this one's DNA". Well, it does run in families. That's established as early as Jedi. So if DNA exists, and the Force runs with it, what is so bad about Midichlorians?
@kaleiohulee6693
@kaleiohulee6693 8 жыл бұрын
Baigandine L that is why relating the force to just genetics is problematic. The force manifests itself in almost every alien race, and rarely was it inherited. Remember that during the Republic era Jedi did not have children, they were taken from normal parents that gave birth to force sensitive children. The Skywalkers were the exception and not the rule.
@BBEEAAN

Kaleiohu Lee _"Either we consider one is simply wrong or there is unknown information that can account for both being correct."_ Yeah, because the midichlororians were discussed in the initial trilogy..I do believe Ben Kenobi and Yoda both explained the Force is in all of creation, and that it binds all living things together. The Prequels flushed out and explained the idea further. Once again. How does someone who is a fan of a movie know so little about the topic he's discussing?

Anyone who says different is either.... #1 A liar #2 An alien with bad taste #3 A robot progammed to lie There is no other conclusion. So the real critics talk before making up baseless bullshit.

+test5458 The apologists for this movie are never ending,.It wasn't a good script ,.( at least a 70% ripoff),.The new characters were at best so-so,.I HATED Poe and Finn was forced no pun intended,.There weren't ANY cool new vehicles (low imagination?),.The acting was pretty damned awful even falling towards SYFY channel lows,.The plot holes were numerous ( more than I can count on 2 hands),.THe STUPIDITY of the Empire/ First order is still REALLY ridiculously high,and Carrie Fisher was just AWFUL,.No defending that,. .But people just disregard these abysmal failures in the movie and say it's GREAT!,. Am I the only sane person on the planet? Need to get a new director on this series to salvage what is salvageable and try to make sense of this HOGWASH,. Oh and the name of the movie was The Force Awakens,.Where was the FORCE?, There was no force in this movie,.and the few times it was represented were really WEAK

In the scene where Rey picks up Lukes Lightsaber, a voice does say Rey, and it's Old Ben Kenobi's voice. They were able to change a word that he's said in the past (from something else, not Starwars), with some tinkering, and fit it into the movie; the other voices in that scene are Yoda, from the Original Trilogy, and Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Prequels.

Things I liked about this movie: - Liked all the characters overall... besides 6po, I wish they retired him :p - Having stormtrooper interactions and especially one that changes side is a refreshing change - I liked how Kylo Ren is a weak villain looking up to Darth Vader. - The new main bad guy looks badass - Overall I like how the story flowed etc Things I disliked: - Yet-another-blow-the-death-star-mission, especially this early, I wouldnt mind at least some build up to that scene. - Too many lucky coincidences (oh yeah right... the -force- asspulls are strong in this movie ).

+Ging De I thought Finn would have the force just from the trailers but now its hard to see him as a Jedi if he couldnt pick it up right away as Rey did. I see him as a consultant like Leia in the OG. he goes around shooting and fighting but the force isnt strong with Finn from what the movie has shown me. If Rey held her own against Kylo Ren and was able to pick up the force, I see rey being a stong Jedi in this sequel. I see Kylo Ren as a lost soul. I think he will be able to harness both the light/dark the force will overcome him to his demise some sort. I think Leia will die at the hands of Kylo and he will realize he lost control. IDK just making my mind wonder cause the movie was so damn exciting that i need to focus more the second time around...

I was actually really disappointed by this movie, for me it felt rushed, nothing was properly explained, the plot literally was A New Hope, nothing really original was done (it just felt like one big homage to the original trilogy), the villain came across as weak and non-menacing (in part due to him taking off his mask half way through the movie), the writing for the most part was pretty weak, there were a lot of really forced unneeded and unfunny jokes (ie. when Kylo Ren is confronting Poe Dameron and Poe says something like 'who talks first', that completely destroyed the tension in the scene and was the most cringeworthy thing I've heard in a while) the story also feels incredibly rushed, a lot more context needed to be given especially politically (ie. Why is there a resistance and a republic? Isn't that what the rebels was fighting to create? Why are they now two separate entities?), there are a million other things I could go on with which also annoyed me but I feel that pretty much covers it. I personally do not like J.J. Abrhams' style, and to me this movie just wasn't Star Wars.

Tim' s right that the bitching about the prequels may now stop, AND Colin is right that it's so New Hope that it's 'aaw, come on..' But what Colin isn't right about is comparing the prequels to Force Awakens. This new movie has flaws, and they shouldn't be overlooked and justified because of the past mistakes made by previous movies. I personally feel this movie fed me too much of the old stuff and never had the balls to go somewhere creative. Kylo Ren shouldn't have stopped the bolt at the beginning. He should have stopped it at the end. If he is going to build up his power and evil presence in this story, he should not get more vulnerable as the movie progresses. It should have been the other way around. If a comparison has to be made between the prequels and this movie, I think it is in that Star Wars always had a problem building up an evil character. Hayden Christensen was an example of this, Adam Driver also is. I think both of them don't have enough realness to them and fail to instill enough fear in the hearts of the viewers as a true villain should.

Yes, it was Obi Wan's voice in the "Force Flashback" scene. They edited a clip of Alec Guinness saying "Afraid" to make it sound like he was saying "Rey" The rest of the line was a new voice over by Ewan McGregor. 2 Obi Wans in 1.

That was Obi-Wan's voice in the room with the lightsaber when Rey had that vision as well as Yoda talking. They hired Frank Oz and Ewan McGregor to come in on the set and record the lines. They even used Alec Guiness' voice over, merging it with Ewan's line. They edited a line from the old movies where Alec said "friends" and they digitally altered it into 'Rey'.

Rey is Luke's daughter, who he had trained in secret on the island from the end. Whenever Kylo started killing the new jedi, Luke hid Rey on Jakku before Kylo could discover her, and he wiped her mind. He fled out of guilt and also with the hope that Rey would find her way to him. He left his lightsaber somewhere he knew Han would bring BB-8 with the map, and when Kylo was searching Rey's mind he mentioned an island which she saw as refuge.

24:56 Finn isn't a jedi, but I think he's force sensitive at least. He actually uses the lightsaber and manages to get in a hit against Kylo. The lightsaber was given to Finn, when it could have just as easily been handed to Han in that situation, but Han wouldn't have been able to use it due to his inability to use the force. When Finn refuses to fire on innocent people and Kylo walks by, he doesn't see Finn being disobedient, he suddenly senses it and then looks. Again, Finn isn't a jedi, but I wouldn't be surprised if he does end up receiving training in the future.

Most people in the movie probably haven't seen Jedis in over 60 years. During the originals everyone thought they were extinct. Jabba's sail barge got blown up, whoever survived probably only felt the explosions everyone who saw this dude with a lightsaber got hacked. In Aftermath, the Empire tried to hide the death of the Emperor. The new regime is now The New Republic. The warring factions are separate from the Government: First Order and the Resistance (even though everyone knows they are supported by the Republic.

I think we need to be carefull saying “That’s not Leia. “Or “That’s not Luke.” I cought myself thinking it too. We may need to come to terms with the fact that its been decades since we’ve seen these characters and people change over that amount of time. These may not be the same people we remember and its unrealistic to think they would never change. We’ll see if they lay the necessary groundwork to reconcile the characters past and present.

That was a good point. Rey's fixation with staying on Jakku is really unatural. Anyone would have grown tired of marking the days on the wall after less than half that time. Was that a comand that was Force-implanted in her subconscious? She keeps talking all the time that "I've gotta go back to Jakku, I've been away too long..." It takes Maz's telling her they're not coming back for her to, so to speak, break the spell. That's raises some really interesting questions.

However, the Force Awakens was better than the last three movies. A better mix mix of CGI and practical effects. I was thrilled to see the old characters and find out what had happened to them. In response to the Kylo Ren vs. Rey and Finn fight; I have to trust the Finn was trained in various forms of combat growing up to become a storm trooper. I've heard loads of folks gripe about Finn using a light saber, but look at our basic law enforcement officers; they are trained with firearms, they are trained with batons, they are trained in hand to hand techniques. It's not a stretch to think Finn can at least wield the sabre to some extent.
