It's not harmful. It's a misconception that was introduced by some western articles who were racist towards Chinese products. There is not even a single recent study that correlates monosodium glutamate (aka Ajinomoto) with any health issues. We should concentrate on refined sugars because they are the real problem.

Your focus on kids products is commendable as kids are future and we already are struggling with pushed hormonal foods , pesticides and what not. As a mother of a toddler i dont like to introduce him to chocolates and biscuits and instead go for homemade snacks or simple petha or peanut chikki . One day I bought a kurkure packet and realised that it was expired but the shocking part was I found out that most of the chips or kurkur get expire in 2 to 4 months and I used to think that they have expired date of 2 3 years.
