I own the kindle keyboard 3rd gen. I bought it way back in 2011. It still serves me well. The only issue is the power button, it does not move back by itself when i turn on the device. There is also a small crack at the lower right corner. The battery still holds a charge for a long time, even though i use the device almost daily. I will keep using it until it stops working. When 3g wireless is phased out, i will download the books through my computer. This device has been with me at work, on holidays and weekend adventures in my kayak. It has helped me wind down after long days at work and long days on the water. When life was stressfull, the books i stored on it provided temporary relief. 11 years and it still works.

tbh I prefer the 2018 version. It's cheaper, the bezels are bigger (which is good for my also big hands) and the device is a little lighter (I know there isn't much difference but since I'm holding it all the time, it does make a difference. And you have to think of the case's weight, too). You can still switch to dark mode, so I don't think the "warm screen" is really necessary. And so far I don't see much problems with the lagging, it's just normal to me... So yeah, I'm sticking with this version.

As for me I have small, child-like hands and I also like reading lying down on my bed and the 2021 version would be such a pain to read for me with its size, even though I was tempted solely for the warm light

2018 better for reading with one hand due to larger bazels, avoiding accidental touches. And it is lighter weight which is very important when you are reading longer hours your wrists dont get tired. I will only upgrade then amazon does a lighter machine.
@squirlywirl

I decided to upgrade from my PW4 and the PW5 because I also thought that the slightly bigger size and weight won't bother me but after a month of using it I just never got used to it. It's kinda uncomfortable to use for a long period of time and the weight is definitively even more noticeable with a case on. My PW5 stays at home and I only use it night when I want the to read with the warm light. Otherwise, my PW4 is still my go to.

I agree with your review. I've replaced my original Kindle - which was the 1st generation - with the Paperwhite 2021version and have found it so much better. I'd have kept going with my original if the case hadn't broken, but the difference going from that version to this, has been amazing. I've read more this year purely because I can read at night now so much more comfortably.

Important to clarify that neither Paperwhite model is back-lit, as you say. Blue light from phones and laptops bothers me at night because it's back-lit (shining at me from behind the screen), whereas the Paperwhite casts the light over the screen and is easier to view right before sleep. I think this is an important distinction for people to know if considering an upgrade, as the Kindle's front-lit blue light may not disturb sleep in the same way that back-lit blue light would.

I really think that Amazon should start phasing out the over-all generation naming. ie: The current Paperwhite is the Paperwhite 5. The Paperwhite - 5th generation. Paperwhite 11th generation is confusing... because it means that it's the 11th Kindle version....starting back in 2007 with the first Amazon Kindle.

I would just like to comment on the storage size: If you use an abundance of audio books or manga/graphic novels with your kindle you may want consider a larger size as these forms of media tend to be larger in data sizes. Personally, 1 year of reading books (Over 150 books loaded , 3 graphic novels, one audio book, and 0.29GB of OS and Updates) I have 26.74GB of my original 32GB kindle available. Also, your video was great Nick.

I have the previous version, but that storage was helpful for my audiobooks that are larger. My wife used to fill up her Kindle with hundreds of medical reference texts that were massive and full of images, charts and tables. It was a clear advantage for her to have a while library of medical referenced in her lab coat while on shifts, especially un rural hospitals / clinics with no wifi and spotty electric current.

Same. I bought the 10th gen only a couple months before the 11th gen came out not knowing they were coming out with a new one but if u think about it, there are pros having the older one. While thinner bezels and bigger screen for reading is nice, the smaller one is more portable since it’s smaller, easier to hold with one hand to read, and the older one has all those pretty colors like the sage green where the newer one only comes in black. I absolutely love my sage green kindle.

Just got my first Kindle. Went for the 10th gen Paperwhite because of the steep price difference with the 11th gen. I'm shocked about the painstakingly laggy interface, I was used to read the Kindle app in my snapy galaxy tab. Of course, it is so much confortable to read an ambient-lit e-ink screen than a OLED for longs periods of time, so I'm happy despite the sluggishness. I do like the size of it, and actually find the bigger bessels make easier to handle the device.

I have a 2013 Paperwhite (still working, just needs charging every 3 or 4 days rather than every couple of weeks) and there is a huge difference in response time, except for one thing, Notes, on my new Kindle, when I press on a word and choose notes, it seems to be some time before the keyboard responds when I start typing. After the first letter, however, it is perfectly fast. I have had some issue with my new Paperwhite, crashed and restarts, and I"m sending it back for a replacement which should sort it out.

Update. The problem was caused by 6 unindexed books. I found which ones by doing search on the home screen for a nonsense word eg ddeerrtttt. Click on the Text in Books section. There they were. I delete them after noting their names then re added them one at a time, waiting before I added the second. Now the Notes work just fine with no lag.

So I have really struggled with kindle devices for a while. I, for the last couple few years, have been reading of off my samsung galaxy fold /fold 2. This is perfect for me because the device is the perfect size. I can annotate how I like and its the perfect over all phone/device for me as a reader daily so I couldnt fathom how to spend money on a device that is half the greatness of my phone.. but I have started to noticed my eyes beg for a break on screen time since all I look at are screens all day. It's black Friday time and I got a cheap kindle from best buy. The lag kept pissing me off because my phone doesn't do that and I hate that I can't make the reading view how I want it.. so I'll probably hardly use it..

Well, I can tell you from firsthand experience that looking at bright white light in the dark is more painful over time than looking at the same brightness amber light. And there definitely is science behind it. Warmer light doesn't impact your night vision as much as white or blue light does. Your eyes being in a state that allows you to see more easily in the dark triggers the production of more melatonin.

And it’s not heavy by much because it’s only they made an half inch difference on the dimension and they used every available space within the tablet to make the screen bigger so you will notice the screen difference good job.

The 32GB is for the audible files, if you mainly read though then 8GB is more then enough.

I have found that even when I don't have the back-light on and the warmth setting to zero, there is still a slight yellow caste to the page colour (my old Kindle had a pure white colour to the page - it didn't have a back-light though, so maybe that's it?) Can you tell me if this is right or not? Thanks for a great comparison. TFS 👍❤

The signature edition also comes with the added benefit of “without ads “. That contributes to its slightly bigger price in addition to the 32gb of storage. Also, if you had traded in your old kindle, Amazon would’ve given you 20-25% off of your new kindle.

I have the 10th generation PW with 32gb with the anticipation of using it for Audible books. It can be a little quirky especially on larger file size books. For those I find I have to wait a while (week or more) for the book to fully load and index properly. Otherwise it will freeze and require a reboot. Most of the time it works fine overall, but occasionally without warning will reboot on its own or become really slow. Other than that, the 10th gen is still fine. I’ve considered upgrading to the 11 gen solely for the snappier performance, but can’t otherwise justify the $$ especially when the device I have is on a good performance spree. For the added functionality, I’m considering a Scribe, but again there’s the $$ hinderance. So for now, it’s the 10th gen for me.

I’ve only just bought the 2018 (10th generation) Kindle Paperwhite in the last Prime Days sale, so I may stick to it for a while longer. I can see how tempting it would be to get the 11th generation Paperwhite for all the reasons you stated, especially the warm light.

The bigger screen, warm uniform backlight options, faster performance and USB C are well worth the upgrade. My 2018 model became especially sluggish after the recent OS changes. Picked up the new model with trade in bonus on Black Friday for $60 and I'm glad I did!

I'm still on the 7th generation model. I'm happy with it and don't need the bells and whistles. I cannot see myself reading and swimming any time soon. At some point I imagine this device will fail. I don't know what the average life span of the Kindle is but it's not unlimited and will die a quite death. Until that time I will wait. These new models are a little too pricey for me at the moment. I wouldn't mind one that can play my few Audible books.

What value is the updated cable really though when you think about it? You plug it in, it charges, kindle holds the charge for a while...as long as current operating systems and pc's are compatible with the older cable, the newer cable doesn't pull much weight in terms of upgrade when considering switching...

seeing how their both practically similar I rather just save money and go with the 2018 model. The screen size and 2 minor features are just not enough for me to warrant paying 2 times the price of the 2018 model and I'm only guess the big price difference more so of the economy more so than what you're actually getting. like if it was around 180-190 I'd gravitate more to the 2021 model

In my case, though, I ordered the version with wireless charging as my old Kindle will no longer charge by any cord. So I want wireless charging as my backup. It depends on your budget. For me for example, the 2018 paperwhite would be a downgrade from kindle voyage, but you can get great deals on the 2018 version (£79.99 for a 32gb version, if you like audiobooks). I'm getting the 2021 due to glass screen (the same as in kindle voyage) + waterproof. The 2018 version has a plastic screen and only 4 lightbulbs which some see as uneven light distribution.
