This is something someone in the schools should have worked to change decades ago. Big applaud and hugs to Steve Hartman. No one every forgets that feeling of being the new person and knowing no one, it stays with you all the rest of your life.

In middle school I use to eat lunch in the girls bathroom. I’m 21 now but it was easier than walking around lonely. When my teacher found out, he made a lunch program where kids could go to his classroom to eat inside so I didn’t have to continue eating there. How time changes things

When I was in high school, I sat alone at first and then just invited myself to other tables, but it was very clear that I wasn't entirely welcome. I didn't have a social group and my friends were all part of different clicks, so I didn't get to hang out with them much.

Wow this is amazing. My 14 year old nephew told me he sits alone during lunch and I don’t even know how to help him (I live across the country). I feel like teachers should help gather some champions to do this program Dennis started “We Dine Together”

Teachers may be unaware of what's happening at lunch time. Why not pitch your idea (it's a very good one) to the teacher/teachers during Parent/Teachers meeting (I think you call it Home/School Assoc). You will be happy you did 😀.

@@lystraallicock695 oh yes! Sorry I meant, the staff who “monitors” students during lunch and recess time. That’s a good idea, I will bring this up to my brother who can bring it up during parent/teacher conference. Thank you!

Teachers can't do everything. Make it a charge with one of the clubs and teams at school: Beta, National Honor Society, FHA, FFA, cheer, baseball, basketball, etc. It has to be student led to make an impact
@jottomatte
@jottomatte 2 жыл бұрын
@@sharontabor7718 hey, yes I agree and mentioned other faculty/staff could gather champions (the students) to start this program. It does have to be driven by students but I was thinking about schools who may not have students who are as motivated or comfortable doing so. Therefore, faculty and staff can nominate students who they think can drive this which also seems to be aligned with the nomination process for We Dine Together program. Just a suggestion!

One of the best parts of these Kindness 101 segments is catching up with the people/person involved to see what's going on with them these days. Nice to know that this idea has spread and is apparently still going strong. "In a world where you can be anything, be kind."

Then a friend and I decided to approach her and the rest is history: the 3 of us became great friends and we still are today. That was almost 30 years ago!!

I wish there was a program like this when I was in school. I ate lunch twice in high school which was the first week of my freshman year. Afterwards, I would go to the library during lunch to do homework to avoid being alone and bullied. I pray more schools will implement this or a similar program because no one should ever be alone or excluded. It doesn't take much to be nice or simply ask someone who is alone if they mind you sitting with them. Trust me, it makes a world of difference when you let someone know they matter. Kindness goes a long way. ❤❤❤

In my early school years I often was alone at lunch time but it was my own choice as I was an introvert and didn't let just anyone get close to me. That eventually changed in high school. So some kids do not always want to be part of a crowd. These all seem to be good kids which we need as many as we can find.
