Seriously, if I had to choose what sense I would like to lose the last, that would be my hearing. It is insane how precious it is and we take it for granted. Its so gratifying to know that hear loss can be at some extend reversed using technology. All the money in the world should go on research for such treatments.

I lost 70% of my hearing and wear hearing aids. People with good hearing have no clue what it’s like to be hard of hearing. I’ve been accused of faking my hearing loss. I had to retire early because of my hearing loss. In a group of 20 people with people talking at the same time I can’t hear ( understand ) what they are saying at all…..it’s just a bunch of noise to me. I get ignored. People rudely say to me in an angry way ➡️ “TURN YOUR HEARING AIDS UP !!!!!”…. Being hard of hearing is a nightmare.

Sorry to hear people have been so rude about it, that's their failing not yours. My mom has been legally deaf since she was 6 yrs old, she can sometimes tell there's a noise but can't distinguish what it is. Now that she's older she hears Eve less. She's also dealt with people being unkind. Deafness is something people can't see so they're less understanding w it than, for example, someone in a wheelchair

I agree its a bloody nightmare i know !! If i was blind i would be helped across the road- if i was in a wheelchair id be given a push - being deaf you are being made to feel an idiot and its your fault. People are embarrassed to speak to you in fear of what others may think of them if they have to raise their voice or make a different sign. So they mostly ignore you if possible !! Can be very isolating .

I always wonder how someone hearing for the first time understands what is being said - as in, what a word that they know through sign or lipreading, actually sounds like. Must be a whole new learning experience. Amazing.

I'm reading through the comments to see if anyone else had the same question. For the adults who have never heard a sound before, I would think that it would take both signing and voice so that the person knows what specific words sound like. Regardless, my eyes were sweating all through these videos. LOL. Modern medicine is wonderful!

I would have thought it was the other way around. A babies brain is ready and waiting and all wired up to hear, so it’s like being 5G ready or something it’s all there waiting But the adults, to spend all that time in silence and then to be bombarded with sound - now I’d have thought that would be overwhelming

God bless all of the infants, children, teens, young adults, and adults in these videos, and God bless everyone who makes this possible for them, from the inventor to the ENT docs and nurses, to the people who build these implants and hearing aids, and those who transport them from the factory to the doctors office. Remember for a hearing person words make sense because the mouth and lips form the words, the sound acknowledges you interpreted it right. So take the world Hello. Your eyes see open mouth, little wide. Then tongue touching the teeth then the mouth forms open round lips.. you could make hello of that… Now a death person hearing for the first time sees the world and knows what it means, but the sound has a more breath movement in the beginning, and has problem understanding that sound is needed to pronounce it properly, but the word he hears follows the word he saw.. so it makes sense… TLDR: not deaf: you see and what you hear match.. deaf/first hear: you hear and what you see seems to match.

As for anyone that is over 6 years old and getting their hearing, if they can fluently understand and speak English the moment their implants were turned on, then I have to believe they've heard and spoken English before. Even if someone was fluent in lip-reading, I don't think they would know which vowels go where the moment they get their hearing "for the first time."

There’s something else that you can do for your hearing …put on a pair of headphones go to KZbin and find some thing called “healing frequencies for hearing loss”… There aren’t very many but find one that resonates with your body and your soul… Listen on low, but loud enough that you can hear it… Lay down and focus on emptying your mind…your “stream of consciousness,” as James Joyce coined… While listening “visualize AND feel yourself having perfect hearing”… By visualizing the result that you desire, you increase the speed with it manifests in your life. I know it sounds like hocus-pocus and it does feel like playing pretend at first… But when your hearing improves…and things shift in the direction you want… when you achieve the results that you desire, it doesn’t feel like pretend anymore💕
