One of the most exciting scenes in any historical film ever. I believe it is based on the battle on the ice scene from the Russian film "Alexander Nevsky." Dagonet's heroism was magnificent.

Never understood the reasoning behind moving into a tighter group, since Arthur and his knights were volley-firing, all that happened was made it more likely that they would hit something. If they would have stayed in a line, the shots would have to have been aimed. A charge would have enveloped Arthur.

Yes it was dumb. If they would have spread out not only would they be less likely to get shot but they would have less chance of breaking the ice too. However it served the purpose of the scene. They were supposed to make the fatal mistake. It’s a movie.

everyone complaining about saxons being northmen and shouldn't be that dumb to bunch up on ice. But nobody mentions they are using crossbows? Historians, please inform us, was crossbows invented in this period of time? this movie shows us the near end of the Roman Empire, so I asssume around AD 476? feels very early for crossbows to be around yet

Crossbows were first invented in China 700 bc than in Greece 500 bc (different versions though). In Rome they used the bigger version aka the Ballista and in some rare cases the "arcuballista" which is basically a crossbow (depictions of that are from ca 100 ad and they are mentioned in the book "Ars Tactica") - but it wasnt used that much due to low effectiveness, but yes crossbows were around in Europe at that time. BUT as a reliable weapon for warfare the crossbow was established by the Normanns around 900 ad (faster reload, higher range and higher force of impact). Before that it was mostly used for hunting (some Pictish stones from the 6th century show that) So its a mixed bag here. Yes crossbows existed at that time in England and yes the Anglo-Saxon knew about them - but did they use them in battle like their "successors" the Normans? I think not and the movie makers tried to mix the Anglo-Saxon/Norman culture a bit too much here

​@@Steveman27 their literally shooting where the wind is in their favor. If you watched the saxons march their banners aka flags are being pushed behind them hence Arthur and the others had wind in their favor. Try shooting a medieval bow and arrow against the wind at a target
