That actually looks like a relatively feasible and accurate tactic. Using archers on the side of an enemy formation to ambush them would use their surprise and cause them to hide behind shields. Then when they can’t see in front of themselves cavalry charges from the front unimpeded and induces casualties and confusion. Then after the initial cavalry charge rides past, the archers can then fire another volley while they are disrupted causing more casualties and leaving the enemy no option but to bring their shields up again. Then all that needs to be done is just repeat with another cavalry charge. The smoke caused by the fires also lowers visibility and make it hard for any defense or counterattacks to take place.

@@wulfhart2653 not necessarily. The sound of the fire burning might mask the sound. And it’s only 6 riders. So might not be as loud as an entire army.

I am afraid that a few horsemen are not enough for such a task. I come from a cavalry nation and I know something about that. A few riders would not attack such a numerous formation, even hussars, Polish hussars.

Notice which hand the archers are holding their bows in. How many archers in this army were left-handed? An extremely unusual sight. When you show them a moment later from the back, you can only see right-handers.

Because women got out there and fought for home and family just the same as everybody else. And it this particular case, woadd/picts were a matriarchal culture. It would have been strange not to see female woads on the battlefield
