This isn’t really what happened in the Crusades though. Of course this is extremely loosely based on them, it’s not supposed to be accurate. Seems as an alternate version where the Christians and Muslims go against their own people and each other which isn’t accurate. However, it does a good job of showing that these two were just mindless barbarians. Yes the Saracens did take the land from the Christians which led to them being cornered and eventually crusading but that’s just how it was back then. It was conquer or be conquered. Let me clarify on “This isn’t what happened” in this scene, the forces pulled back as it was a misunderstanding and the treaty was put back into order and Raynald was punished. What I’m saying is that the movie depicts the events OVERALL inaccurately but this they remade quite well! Honestly, King Baldwin was a far greater warrior. He had leprosy and despite the Crusaders having a mere fraction of the manpower and resources the Saracens had, he led them to win around 30-40 of the battles involved in the crusaders with the first, fifth (might have gotten it mixed up with the third), sixth, and seventh all being in favor of the Crusaders getting the better of the exchanges. Most chalk it up to them being blessed but Baldwin was truly that great of a tactician and warrior. Keep in mind, he did this with leprosy which was severe enough to cause him pain and struggle for something as simple as mounting a horse!

It doesn’t matter if Baldwin got the kingdom from relation, his disease was life threatening and should have completely prevented him from even commanding an army let alone fighting alongside them. Additionally, since they were passive, Saracen numbers grew while Christian numbers fell. By the time the crusades had arisen, they were cornered and supremely outnumbered. Theres a reason Baldwin is known to be a master strategist, it’s due to what he did and what he pulled off with limited numbers. Don’t get me wrong, Saladin was a great warrior and a master strategist as well, just not on the level of the Leper King! Again, the Crusaders didn’t get lucky and weren’t just “blessed”, they were commanded by a master tactician which is why they were even able to combat Saladin and the threatening forces.

Life was hard and vicious and short then. Baldwin was born to an elite ruling family and trained to be a commander,warrior ,administrator and ruler from the moment he could walk . He was educated because as he would be responsible for the lives of tens of thousands of people ,he needed to know about every other kingdom, it's ruling families and customs and history. Because he would almost certainly, at some point, have to negotiate with them. He had to learn the art of diplomacy. Which involves lying and betrayal. But not by choice. Rulers are not free to live as they choose. Sometimes they have to sacrifice their personal principles for the sake of the people they are ruling. Childhood? These people don't have childhood. Not then, and not now. No choice of subject to learn. No choice about whether you are the sporty type or not. You'll be up at dawn ready for weapons training, no food , no preparation. You are maybe 6 or 7 and you will be black and blue by the end of the morning. Yes, the whole morning. To be a warrior, you can't make do with practicing till you get it right. That's not enough. You have to Live, Eat, sleep, Breathe it and practice till you can't get it wrong. Even if you try. Romantic relationships? You marry whom it is politically expedient to marry and damn well have children by them. Even if they are repugnant to look at. You will do this to tie the two families together and prevent war by marrying allies. If you are gay, you will find a way. There are always ways. Your private romance must be discreet. It will be accepted and tolerated if you don't rub people's nose in it. Your entire life belongs to the nation you are ruling. The good monarchs,Chiefs, Empowers, kings and Queens knew this. They had privilege, yes, materially. But their lives were not their own. And when they had children, they could not permit themselves to display any love they felt to those children. I have no solutions my young padwah, but I offer this piece of advice. Be physically active to your own best ability. Do this by engaginging in an activity you Like. Hiking, swimming. Team sports or 1-1 sports like tennis, table tennis. Yoga or similar, pilates is also awesome. However much you feel you wish to be alone, find a club or organisation that does what you like to do and go meet them once a week, real time, face to face. Whether it's a gaming community, book club, chess club, film club writers club, makeup club, whatever kind of activity where you can get together with just a few others who share your passion. Dance, skateboard, roller skating, fishing, rowing, sailing, volunteering at SPCA, helping out with the food run for the homeless with the Salvation Army. Something, where you engage with people. This video clip has clearly captured your imagination. Get a book about it. Not a dvd, not streaming not KZbin. A BOOK. Made out of paper. You can borrow them, lots of them, FREE, from the library. It's a new sensation reading from a real book. It's different. Not all are up to it. But do you know why it's essential to do this? When you read the words, the thoughts and feelings, impressions and interpretations of the author, you are hearing the words in your head. Your own voice, and as you read the descriptions of scenes and characters. Events both wonderful, disastrous, joyful and tragic, it is YOUR minds eye that pictures those scenes. You, you alone are painting the scenes with your own remarkable mind. You will find that often, your inner eye has viewed the scenes in a way completely different to any subsequent movie. Your impression and interpretation will almost certainly not be the same as the authors. And definitely not the same as the person next to you who is reading the same book. Living ones own life, starting with using ones own intelligence and imagination, rather than blindly accepting another's interpretation, spoon fed for easy absorption, bypassing any real critical thoughts on the matter, is a wonderful feeling. You can feel yourself stretch and flex. And grow. And soon, you begin to see things around you that you'd not noticed before. You can put the book down at anytime. Pick it up again. Re read a paragraph as many times as you wish. Until your mind is satisfied it understands what is being offered. And the best thing is, your mind's understanding may be different from the author's intention. And your mind will NOT BE WRONG! THERE is freedom, There is adventure. If you are introvert, ASD , ADHD ,CPTSD, any number of difficult things we now have knowledge of, but did not when I was a child. We live in an age where you can find others like you. You can find your tribe. History is a wonderful inspiration. I'm glad you are inspired. Don't stop with this clip. Pick up the inspiration to do something and run with it. Start by getting a book from the library. Or buy if you prefer. Make sure one day you have snacks and drinks etc and go go for a walk somewhere nice, settle down and read. I don't know you and you don't know me. But I'll tell you this much of myself. I'm 61. A survivor, of a lifetime of "difficult"things. I'm a former martial artist. Senior. A while ago, a world and European multi gold medallist. A painter, a sculptor. A very poor guitarist and bass player.(managed to gig though). A car crash survivor. A mother.(the very best bit!). I have ADHD and ASD. Diagnosed only 4 years ago. It explains much. I've had a nervous breakdown and thought my life was over. But it wasn't. It was hard. It's always been hard. And it will be hard. But the golden times are worth every moment of struggle. There is reward in the struggle itself. And now. At last. When I've found an even keel,(though fragile still) I'm going to university. At 61. I'm selling everything and starting fresh. I'm moving 300km to be in the town of my university. I'm terrified, and struggling a bit with the logistics. But all roads have brought me here. I'm studying Psychological Science. With a few other bits too. Start with a book. You never know where it will take you. 🖖
