I didn't really like this movie until I saw this scene. Beowulf's transformation into a cynical yearning for former glory days is well done in my opinion. I think the movie portrayed well the transition from mythical age of heroes into historical era, which happened in many ancient cultures (though not in one man's life time of course).

Basically Beowulf is lamenting how now that his heroics have passed, all he can do now is kill everyone else. As is the nature of humanity. When we don’t have a common enemy to unite against, inevitably, we turn against each other.

I love how internet chads yearn for paganism so as to return to some kind of muscular masculinity and conveniently ignore that the European pagans are no more precisely because they got their asses handed to them by European Christians who were better at organizing societies, raising crops and yes, waging war. Vikings were good at raiding unprotected settlements along coasts and rivers and disappearing before any real resistance could be mustered. In the instances where they were successful at taking land and holding it, they were consumed into the larger and more powerful hegemonies of the Franks and Anglo Saxons, or in the case of the Rus, converted to Christianity of their own accord.

In the scene just prior to this, the character Ursula mentions the upcoming celebration commemorating Beowulf defeating Grendel and the day after they celebrate the birth of Hallend Christ. Can anyone tell about the word/title "Hallend" ? I've traced it as a male first name meaning "from the island"...I can only guess that refers to England..which was part of the Roman Empire (until around 410 AD..about 100 yrs prior to the events of Beowulf) and where Christianity spread from. Then he was corrupted by an demon dragon(Through strength lust and power) and brought ruin to his people after lying to them. He himself is like an broken man after his crooked deal. Then in the end he realized sacrifice was the only way to save his people like the way God sacrifices Christ for his people.

They completely distorted the original poem's Christian themes in this movie. That is what poisons this film. Like it or not, the Christian God was central in the REAL Beowulf, and the author always ended a recounting of a historic anecdote or recounting of Beowulf's feats with a lengthy praise of God. What this film did, was do the exact opposite, slamming Christianity whenever it gets the chance (let alone all the liberties that it took with the plot that NEVER happened in the poem). This film is a mockery and a perversion of the original story, but what else can you expect from Hollywood.

The poverty of weeping Christians in these comments trying to say "oh yeah we looked cool too back in the days, we were warriors as well, killing heretics or persecuting pagans". Nothing has changed. Of course this film twists the poem, because it was written by a Christian and like most literature of that time, it was a story with a germanic structure and a christian message. However this film is a tiny drop of what, especially in the US, that still immense ocean of indoctrinated folks (living between warring and charity valours just to look cool in both ways and giving a sense to their lives) deserves. For the future crying jeezus-slaves commenting hereunder: no, you can't get power and money as your elites does and be the "good guys" as well. The great peculiarity of your religion compared to others is the huge hypocrisy of your everyday living, keeping on telling lies to yourselves and others about what should be and what you really are. Like the dude in the comments saying "oh yeah the true power is NOT doing those things" ahahah, yeeeaah sure because if Christians in those days used just kindness, sweet words and not the SWORD, the whole of Europe wouldn't be christian today! Read history goddammit. The only truth is that you like to live in a lie to feel better.

As if. I do read history. Because of that, I know the Christians most certainly didn't conquer Rome with the sword. I know the vast majority of Pagan Germanic nations were won not by crusaders but by missionaries. Boniface who threw down Thor's Oak; Patrick who burned a fire for Yaweh in defiance of Ireland's Bel; Augustine of Canterbury who converted an English king-- These and so many others won the Saxons, Angles, Irish, and Scandinavians for the Church when centuries of domination by mighty emperors such as Charlemagne with "convert or die" approaches yielded naught but blood. *Cope harder. Christ is King.* The once-Pagans saw it. Will you?

@francescomanetti-germanica 11 ай бұрын
It is always ironic but fascinating as well the self-convinction of people around the world about things that once in the future as once in the eons of the past will be faded as falling drops in the oceans of time. "Christ is King" means anything as means basically nothing. However, if there is one who has lost the way (even if I don't like this way of thinking) is you and folks like you, who forgot the teachings of his ancestors. But it's not even your fault of course, you just were born in a Christian society and/or with christian parents/teachers etc.. Anyway, I'm noone to judge anyone, therefore I think each one of us should follow the spiritual way that makes us "happy". Returning to history, I always suggest to christians not to dive too deep in it because its course demonstrates everything and its contrary and it is not so satisfying for someone needing pillars of certainties. Sometimes, when I learn about the history of Christianism (or better said, of Christianisms), it appears that christians are more "pagans" than pagans themselves, they just don't know it. The multitudes of sects, holy figures, traditions, beliefs, heresies, leaving apart all the utterly different interpretations and conclusions given from the "big three", (Christianism, Judaism, Islam), make your monotheistic world-view far more confused than that of the "pagans". And that, whether you accept it or not. As a consequence, what the pagans (your great-great-great....grandads and granmoms) "saw" is just what every subordinate culture has to accept when the dominant culture changes. Christianism won just thanks to power and cultural influence, because they were on the right side of the river. And you saw also that when this majestic religion lacked the support of the political and economic power, given also thanks to the success of the Roman Empire firstly and secondly of the western imperial powers in the Modern Age, it suddenly stopped expanding. And one day it will come that, when an another religion/culture will detain more power and influence over our society, Christianism will undergo the same fate that it caused on the ancient religions of Europe. Sic transeat gloria mundi. @@lausdeo4944

I have seen absolutely nothing to shake my faith in Reality (that is, the Christian outlook on the world). What have I seen, as you didn't ask? I have seen history, the world, and all understanding of the cosmos itself undone and reordered by the Christ God. I have seen arguments against the Biblical Cosmology dashed apart one by one. I have seen the Dominion of Christ conquer the World-- by Rome, by Europe, then throughout the world. I have seen Christendom plant the cross through the sword, of course, but primarily through the missionary. That is what "Christ is King" means. We came to conquer the world through our "power and cultural influence," but that influence didn't come from militaries. It came from the cross. We conquered the most powerful empire on earth through our suffering. Then we conquered the earth. You are naive if you believe we will fade away. "But", "but primarily with missionaries", "but not from the militaries". Dude, I don't doubt you read history, but you're telling yourself the truth. Hence you're inventing it to legitimate your worldview, and it's ok, we all do it, but please, try not to mix critical thinking with the "grand design" or the "manifest destiny" or I don't know (and then you say I AM the naive). Please, if you were born in an islamic country, or an hindu, who knows, you would tell me about how sure you are of your Allah, or whatever it may be, etc. etc. etc.. You conquered the earth? You who? You Christians don't even know who you are anymore (probably you've never known). Your "ship" is embarking water everywhere and, as I told you, if you've read history for real, and not what you need to see in it, you would have seen that each dominant culture, each "conqueror-idea" won just with sword, blood spilling and political power. If Christianism would have worked just with kindness and good words, as your high morality usually advertises itself, you wouldn't even be christian. The world itself wouldn't even know what Christianism or Jesus is. The more a culture is dominant, the more blood there is on her hands. Therefore imagine how much sufference, destruction, vile murder, persecution etc. was needed to spread Christianity all over the world, through all the continents, in the course of many many centuries. If you read history with less zealousness you shall see that you're absolutely not the "good ones" in the tale. And yes my friend, once you and me, our ideas, problems, our commenting under a Beowulf's video on KZbin xD, (namely less than a grain of sand in an almost endless beach of space and time), will be faded as for uncountable things already happened and is happening in the cosmos. If you need to see the God's plan here and there because existence is a burden too big to face, and accepting its meaninglessness would be devastating, is fair. All we humans make up our own pillars to keep on living. But please, at least don't call me the "naive". @@lausdeo4944
