I find the differences between Grendel and the Dragon interesting. The dragon is not only vastly stronger but he's also capable of reason and complexities. Unlike Grendel, the Dragon kills for revenge.

In the original story of Beowulf, there is no connection between Beowulf and the dragon. The dragon simply shows up later on after Beowulf becomes king. The scriptwriters just thought it would be a cool way to end the film.

Well here's a complex thing about both the hag's(Grendel's mother)sons.Grendel is a troll his father Hrothgar does have the worst genes,for a fat king/jarl,thus Grendel is killing people because he is disturbed during sleep.Grendel is horrible in front of people,but was always doting towards his mama(hag).Whereas the Dragon is a shape shifter Beowulf has better cells for a hero king until,seduced by the hag.The Dragon attacks people for bad purposes and revenge for abandoning him and his mother,it is Beowulf's fault.Grendel is poor while,Golden Boy/Dragon is the greatest son the hag ever has.(This is just a fact).

In the epic, the dragon was just a dragon nothing more. Long after grendel had been slain along with his mother crowning beawulf as a legend amongs his peoples, a dragon attacked, Not a humanoid shapeshifter or related to beawulf in any way just a dragon that lived in a cave and fought beawulf whilst he was in his elderly years. The dragon died but struck beawulf in the abdomen after he had lodged a sword into the dragons neck leaving him for death surrounded by his fellow warriors that followed him into battle against the dragon.

I love this film but I really hoped they stayed true to the original. In the poem Beowulf chops Grendel’s Mother’s head off, he doesn’t sleep with her. Instead of a story about honor and heroism this film is about infidelity, pride, and sins of the father. The action is amazing but they really messed with the whole theme of the story.

The dragon is part of the pre Christian times, thus it symbolizes the last monster for our pagan monster slaying hero to fight in an age without such metaphysics. The speech Beowulf gives right after the time skip is him speaking of the age of heros and monsters is dead. "The Christ God killed it." The change of Grendel’s mother giving birth to Beowulf’s son was not a good change. It makes no sense when you really think about it. Her motivation should be to kill Beowulf for killing Grendel, not giving birth to his son. It’s very inconsistent.

She weaponized Beowulf’s son to kill him. She probably knew that he had good genes that would be able to turn her child into a beast.

@@Negus1k I meant that the movie doesn't give us the transition of her wanting to give birth to Beowulf's son. The scene is literally her grieving Grendel's death, which then turns to rage. But in the next scene, she's appearing in a dream to him pretty much demanding a son, while slaughtering his men and some villagers in real time. Where's the transition of her deciding not to kill him or to switch to a long term goal? In terms of writing, it doesn't make sense for the motivation.

These heroes of antiquity ever did shit at the end of their stories, but they always were able to find a way to stop this shit, but of course, with a lot of deaths msm way, the movie is great, but the differences have destroyed the childhood I had, because beowulf the book dies a hero, as in the movie ... like a fool, arrogant and unethical (as it made a deal with a demon, even if not very choice right ...)

I would say confronting one's own consequences and past decisions and dying saving his Kingdom from a dragon is pretty damn heroic. He made a mistake, gave into temptation as a mortal man. But he owned up to it. That is as heroic as one can hope a mortal man to be.

Grendel appeared as a malformed, pathetic hybrid of two species that had no business interbreeding... The Beowulf/Mother cross somehow came out as a fully-formed, shape-shifting dragon. If the cycle of Mother seducing the slayer of her son extends back to Hrothgar, the dragon he slew would have been Mother's son by a previous hero. Since 2/3 of her documented children were proper dragons, would that suggest that Grendel was the result of Hrothgar's weak genes... Or that his HUMAN input was actually more dominant than Mother's other mates? Seems like the movie failed to develop the final dragon character at all. Why did he suddenly have a beef with ol' Dad? Seems like he had little to complain about, being an awesome dragon with the ability to shape-shift into a golden humanoid. Lack of motivation there, I think.

The Dragon realized that his father, Beowulf, only sired him as a tool to get glory, so he despised his father for making him a kid of two worlds: Tolerated by both, accepted by neither. The Dragon is prideful, arrogant, lustful and sadistic, who takes delight in killing others and boasting about his superiority (traits also applied to Beowulf himself) He doesn't want to merely hurt and kill Beowulf, but also wants to prove that he is superior.

She said all would be good until he violated the terms of their agreement. Then the slave found the golden horn that violated the contract and thus mommy didn't have to hold back the son anymore or maybe told him to wreak havoc. The long peace and neverending victory ended for Beowulf when the contract was voided and he lost her blessings.
