Even better listening to it on vinyl, through an old skool Marantz 4400, thrashing some home built "test" 4 way speakers boxes at half volume, the vocals and highs ripping through your ears as if the band was there screaming it directly into your ear canals. It surprises me that this was from 1969, there was nothing really this technical at the time besides maybe Zappa, but still he wasn't as heavy as this was. Edit: When I say "technical" I mean switching time signatures on a whim, speeding up and slowing down at random, super complex song structures and guitar lines, noise coming in-and-out of nowhere, can only recall Zappa and some jazz musicians doing this stuff at the time, but these guys merged it with hard rock and turned it into something new. It was like heavy prog.

I first heard of King Crimson and this album from a joke on "The Venture Brothers" ( a criminally underrated show). Dr. Venture is showing one of his sons, Dean, his collection of progressive rock records. It's what he listens to to get in the right mood to science. Dean picks up one, asks what it is, and his dad says "You're not ready to dance in The Court of the Crimson King! At this stage in your development, that will make you an evil scientist." So they start off with YES.

It still blows my mind to this day that this song was made in 1969 and it packs a hell of a punch, from the vicious sax playing of Ian McDonald to the jaw dropping guitar work of Robert Fripp to Greg Lake's smokey vocals. King Crimson had it all and their music was a perfect blend of jazz and rock all rolled into one but still sounding fresh. This band were light years ahead of the game and they were only just getting started.

weirdly enough, radiohead hated prog and saw it as self indulgent trash. they grew up on punk and early alternative rock, so i suppose that might explain it. thom apparently respects pink floyd and likes a couple of their songs, and according to jonny meddle is the only good prog album ever (and that, during his quest to find a good prog album, he heard genesis and, despite not liking it, decided to steal the sound of the mellotron and use it all over OK computer), but otherwise they all hate prog apparently. around the bends/ok computer they were semi-frequently called "punk floyd" or otherwise compared to them, despite not being into prog at all, which i find pretty funny

After the initial shock from the disturbing cover, I placed the record player needle on the vinyl, and was completely knocked off of my chair at what I heard, which was not like any music before it. Even at 15 years old, I knew this was an important musical statement. And from that moment on, and to this day I become a prog rock fan.

So Brilliant. I went to the live version of this from 2015, Japan. From the opening notes I thought (no, doesn't sound right, too slow, low energy) and I came and YES, this is what I remembered. Back in the early 80s in NYC when certain members of the populace would blast the neighborhood with high decibel salsa on a Saturday night, I would point the speakers at the street and reply with this.

The single greatest crime in the history of rock and roll is the fact that Michael Giles' name isn't spoken in the same breath as John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Neil Peart. I never knew how incredible of a drummer he was until I made the conscious decision to listen to King Crimson, and even then I still had to look up his name.

Robert, let Rick Beato do a "what makes this song great" on this one. He was gutted when you took it down, he played only a few seconds of it in a top 10 best rock albums video, and showed the cover. Give him the exclusive rights. He doesnt do it for money but for education on what is really good music, and it will get you a couple of thou new young fans for sure. And he does things like most original guitar sound" and i am sure this solo would feature...stuff like that...educational... Anyway, thanks, have a nice day.

Actually, Robert, if you do read this, I'll second the motion. Mr Rick Beato's videos are purely appreciative and are made for entirely educational purposes. He taught jazz guitar at University when he was younger and later became a producer. His channel, called Everything Music, is dedicated to celebrating the technical aspects of creating, and the emotional impacts of, many modern classics, such as your track above. Indeed the album "In The Court Of The Crimson King" featured in his "Top 20 Best Debut Albums Ever!" recently. Unfortunately he was unable to delve deeply into a discussion about the hows and whys because the small 9 second excerpt he chose to edit into his video (as a reference) was blocked by youtube on behalf of your management company. I can understand that but I do believe that in this instance it would have been apropos to an even fuller appreciation of the track and its place in the history of music to have allowed Rick this one pass. In fact, to reiterate the point above; I believe it would be of service the the legacy of King Crimson to allow him to produce one of his "What makes this song great?!" videos about any of the King Crimson library. I for one would be delighted to watch it!
