When you were playing the cornet on this album, in Command Studios in London in 1971, I was a one-year-old baby living in Israel. Some twenty years later, after years of delving into classical British rock music, I discovered this album and was enchanted by it. Your cornet playing certainly contributed to the album's charm. And so, what you recorded in Lodnon in 1971 had a profound positive impact on a troubled young man living in Israel circa 1990. Some years later, I discovered that the cause of both my troubles and my fascination with classical British rock music was my autism - I grew up on the autism spectrum in an era in which nobody knew that such a spectrum existed. King Crimson's early albums remain among my favourite natural tranquilizers to this very day.

I didn't know who King Crimson was. But I saw the album at Hit Records in Dallas and I liked the cover. Can't remember the year if it was 74, 75, 76 ? But I went home after buying it and put it on my record player and realized these dudes were top of the line musicians. I've loved Fripp and his changing company ever since. I was a big YES fan and I remember thinking that drummer plays just like Bill Bruford. Come to find out it was Bill Bruford. At 66 I still love this music today.

Formentera is a small island, close to Ibiza. This music seems to be distilled from its atmosphere, in the middle of summer: the heat, the burning light of the Mediterranean, the siesta time in the shade of a pine tree, the smells of a thousand flowers and the sea, and a girl, tanned by the sun, which approaches smiling.

Like others posting here, I had never before heard music like the music made by King Crimson. Years later I was told the genre is Avant Garde and now 4 decades later, it still sounds original or "fresh" to me. As an impecunious teen, I bought these when I could find then and when I could afford them. $7 - $8 when your monthly income is around $250 - $300 is a big investment, but I love music and still do. I remember a light tan or beige album cover (thick paper) with little art, but for a raised, small bas-relief part. (I still don't know what that depicted, nor recall with precision where it was on the album cover.) Thanks for all the great music thru the years!

I’m with you and love it but it may be a little too jazz influenced for a lot of people. Same reason people don’t care for the improv section of Moonchild (I love it). For people who aren’t accustomed to hearing free jazz or jazz improvisation/harmony these may sound a little directionless. However, I didn’t like this album at first either. It wasn’t until after I got into jazz that it finally clicked. Sometimes the ear has to be slowly introduced to this kind of harmony in order to enjoy and “get it”, although I hate that term. The harmony used in Crim’s (and jazz) music isn’t something heard often in popular music. A lot of diminished, whole tone, altered, and non western sounds.

I am guilty of cutting KC songs like this short. No more. The Sailors Tale reprise with the Song of the Gulls mutated through the vocal chanting. Wow. These guys were special. I only like KC from Giles Giles and Fripp to 1974. I can't do 1980s music from bands that were doing this here at one time. Even if it's a different lineup. That 80s sound with KC style doesn't fit me; never will. Man; Islands is my favorite. If Cirkus was on this album; I might not need another. The Letters is STUNNING. That guitar is so sparing but it hits harder that way. It's special when the song gets guitar treatment cause it's not there so often..

My list of favourite KC vocalists would probably go Wetton, Boz, Belew, Greg, then the rest. As much as I like lots of Greg's vocals in the first two albums, I feel he developed much further in ELP. Wetton had always blended well with the albums he was on, and offered quite a great range of styles, so that's probably why he's my favourite (gotta listen to some Asia huh?). Even though Boz was only on one record, he made a great impression on me and gave the record a great sense of uniqueness of tone in comparison to the other records, his reserved voice was a breathe of fresh air for King Crimson!

If someone posted something similar, I apologize, but the band had to have heard Pharoah Sanders’ “Karma” before writing and recording this song, right? Keith Tippett’s piano, Mel Collins’ saxophone, the Leon Thomas-esque vocals near the end of the track. I feel like the influence is undeniable. Either way, this is absolutely incredible, as is the entire album, not sure why this is as underrated as it is… as great as the rest of their catalogue is, this is just as impressive in my humble opinion.
