@paulperkins16153 жыл бұрын
I don't hear it as menacing at all. There are two memorable riffs in the song, one is the grand and rather pretty, though sad, main theme that has been played on violin, saxophone, or guitar in different versions of KC. The other is the "Chinese water torture" guitar riff that now takes two guitarists to play because the fewer the different notes, the more guitars you need, or something.

What the hell. Who does that? Builds tension by plucking just one note. Going up a half step or a step. For several minutes. That's so bold and ballsy. Fripp, playing for the music, and even though an incredibly gifted chop-master, he never flexes, he services the song. This song is absolutely amazing.

Song Meaning; " This song is simply about the futility of living. It closed one of the most powerful chapters in progressive rock history and with it closed the most intriguing chapter of King Crimson. The first verse refers to the brightness of adolescent life, of the demure touch of a beautiful sunny day to spark one's imagination, but the verse reveals that a bright and enthusiastic world does not export its beauty to you. All things that world promised you fade to black and you are lifeless in a sunny world. The second verse confirms that sadness will extrapolate over all of your desires and dreams, that your life will retain the emptiness and the lack of meaning over time, the bright disingenuity of younger days will never shine on you again The third verse is the most interesting as it hauntingly describes the poisoning of the soul by which no helping hand or smile could rescind the damage that has been done to you by the world and by time, true hopelessness has ensued. The chorus of the song is a very interesting metaphor. In the most unequivocal sense it means that your skies have become starless for nothing you will see will ever compel you again - and so it entails that you are stained bible black. Whatever spirituality or happy hopes in the world exist that could have placated you are dead and black, but held habitually by time and empty hope. Finally the most important verse of all - the one spoken by Robert Fripp. The monotone squeal of his guitar piece that occupies the next 5 or so minutes after the third verse is like the progression of time from months, to years, to decades. The child who acknowledged the dying of his world has lived a zombie all his life and finally sees the inexorability of his own death in his final hour after an age of emptiness. The last 3 minutes of the song are powerful but the last minute postulated absolute death. It is the most powerful minute in Rock history and probably a contributor to such events like Kurt Cobain committing suicide, Cobain regarded this album 'Red' as the greatest rock album of all time... ...When that last minute hits you, you finally taste the pathos of the character described in the song, because you see that character to be you. You see your own death, and the worthlessness of your own life, it is beautiful, terrifying, and on an implicit level - why most people love this song to death. This song ended a golden age Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this " (i took this songmeaning from the internet, it's not mine ,author unknown ;) )

Electric guitars are fascinating in their capabilities of producing all sorts of different sounds. You just have to take the time to experiment with different equipment and untraditional setups. Then have the balls to record or play live with the unique sound you created.

@Colin Baker You are welcome to your opinions, of course. And I'd be very surprised if even one other responding soul here would second that opinion. Rather, I'd think any respectable musician worth his/her salt would recognize Tony Levin as being one of the most most appreciated & sought-after bassists of all time. A fraud? That would only be you, I'm sad to point out.

I could say that I saw KC performing with these 3 drummers!!! Starless is a hymn to the perfection of what music can be, well composed and beautifully performed on stage. Here are masters at work!!! Je pourrai dire que j'ai vu KC en spectacle avec ces 3 batteurs!!! Starless est un hymne à la perfection de ce que peut être la musique bien composée et jouée admirablement sur scène. Voici des maîtres à l'oeuvre!!!

This is a fabulous song. I have no clue how Fripp makes that beautiful sound come from his guitar though.

He practices his scales like a good boy. Also he invented his own tuning and strings (they're the only strings that won't snap when he plays in his own tuning lol)

I can't see an Ebow in his right hand so he is probably using a Fernandes Sustainer to get those long-sustaining violin tones. I googled the question and found a post on The Gear Page that said that for the past 30 years he has played with a Fernandes sustainer pickup in his guitars. So while not 100% certain, this is likely how he is doing it.

One of the best guitar riffs of all time! And Wetton's vocals in this recording were his best ever. (I read that Wetton wanted this on the LP ' Starless and Bible Black' but Fripp did not think it was good enough! And I finish by saying this live version is EXCELLENT.

I cannot think of many (or any other) bands that can change their vocalist and still be as iconic as ever. Maybe AC/DC in the 70's.
