King Darius in Israel: An Almost Amazing Archaeological Discovery

While touring Tel Lachish last December, visitors stumbled across a pottery sherd with an inscription etched across it. After reporting it to the Israel Antiquities Authority, and following research by an epigrapher, the ostracon was revealed earlier this month to be the first-ever inscription found in Israel bearing the name of the famed Persian king, Darius the Great.
Unfortunately, two days later, the discovery turned out to fake news.
On today's program, host Brent Nagtegaal talks about how an honest archaeological mistake led to the discovery. Then he discusses how the famous Persian king was critical in the construction of the second Temple in Jerusalem.

The woman's story sounds bogus to me. Operatives are often sent to discredit Biblical archeology. They should test the ink. I just can't see anybody choosing a pot shard or ceramic tablet from the time of Darius the Great to write on, except to number and catalog the find. It sounds fishy to me.

Anatoth is an interesting spot. There is large Israeli Army base there, an Arab town called Anata, a Jewish Yishuv named Almon (aka Anatoth), and the terminus of a shortcut highway directly connecting the Binyamin settlements with Maaleh Adumim. I do not know if there is room for an additional archeological dig. Unless one might find the farm owned by Jeremiah, likely if one finds any remnant of an ancient town, it will be a small unwalled village, not an ancient walled city.

i am listening to this and am a potter -- how do you just take up a piece of pottery off the ground and write anything on it into an already fired clay piece ? you cant print on fired clay with out tools! and then your people would know a new scratching mark from an old mark insized in the clay -- it makes no sense thank you
