The reason Luigi and Ness trusted Dedede because, as they had noticed, the badges with Dedede’s face had revived them, and when Dedede was un-trophied, he was immediately overwelmed with hope, gratefulness, pride, and satisfaction, because his badges _worked._ So basically, Dedede was the most important character in all of SSE.

I would say that King Dedede is one of the deepest characters in the Nintendo Universe. King Dedede hasn't had it easy. So much is unknown about him. Kirby and King Dedede are more like rivals, but friends at the same time. Yeah, King Dedede can be a jerk sometimes, but he is just envy of Kirby. (Probably for the fact that Kirby is liked and gets all the attention. This leads me to believe that King Dedede had it tough when growing up.) So much is explained in the Kirby animé. In one episode, when the Cappies made a fake funeral of Kirby being dead, King Dedede literally showed much regret and was so sorry for all the things he had done... Meta Knight also explains that the reason King Dedede wants Kirby gone from Dream Land is because he is envious of him. For me though, King Dedede is a kind-hearted and caring person at heart, despite him having egoistic and arrogant traits. He is a real hero! All hail King Dedede! :')

One of the reasons I like Dedede is that he's never been portrayed in a purely evil light, even in his very first appearance when he stole everyone's food, it didn't seem malicious. Like, he wasn't think about the people that would be left with nothing to eat, he probably was just tired of getting stuff himself and figured since he was king he could just help himself. That doesn't make him evil. It makes him selfish, greedy and and kind of a jerk, but not evil. Hell, even at the tail end of that game we see him crying and then Kirby goes up and gives him a hug... You don't put that in a game if a character is meant to be a strait up bad guy.

Spencer Stanley In Kirby triple deluxe there was a villain named Taranza. By the order of the main villain, Queen Sectonia, he kidnapped King Dedede thinking that he was the hero of dreamland (take a moment to think about that). The whole game revolves around Kirby’s quest to save King Dedede. When Kirby confronts Taranza, he takes control of him and turns him into Masked Dedede. Halfway through the fight, Masked Dedede’s hammer breaks. So he turns purple and grabs an axe of the wall, turning into Masked Dedede’s Revenge.

In one of the earlier Kirby games (Kirby's Dream Land 2 or 3 I believe), at the beginning when you find out what happened to Dream Land for the plot, Kirby immediately accuses King Dedede of being the culprit, when he was actually innocent.

I honestly don't think King Dedede is a bad guy in any of the Kirby games, even the first game where he 'steals' all the food in dreamland for himself. In Kirby Super star, during the 'spring breeze' section of the game, which is a retelling of the original game, it depicts King Dedede stealing all of the food in dreamland with what appears to be the help of just about everyone else in the kingdom. Yet no one goes to try and stop him, asides from Kirby. My belief is that this is the first time King Dedede sees Kirby, and witnesses his immense appetite and believes that he'll eat all the food in dreamland, leaving everyone else to starve and so he takes drastic measures to protect his people and in every other Kirby game, he's either possessed or has alternate motives that reveal him to be the actual hero in everything.

I always had this thought that King Dedede mostly just doesn't like Kirby that much cause he's still harboring a grudge from the first game. (It's healed a lot but the scars still there.) That said, hes not really a bad guy so much as he is short sighted, hot tempered, and egotistical. Beyond that, he knows what needs to be done sometimes and even is willing to see Kirby as a real good friend, as long as he can still claim that "Kirby's the sidekick- I'm the REAL star."
