In real life, your dog would probably have liked the king. Henry Vlll has been judged very harshly by history but in his own time he was revered and admired. He was also quite the sportsman and had dogs, horses, etc. So, sorry...your dog probably would have found him to be quite agreeable.

I don't know if you're in the states, but I'm an American historian who failed every history class. The method of teaching is just bad. We're taught basically to memorize a bunch of names & dates, and it's strictly American history, with bits of our allies & enemies over the years. Even "world" history was centered on western history, with mentions of a handful of other countries - the pyramids in Egypt, the great wall of China, but little about the context or the people. History is written accounts of human stories. It's rarely unbiased because we have to rely on whomever was writing and keeping it, but it's still exciting and fascinating. Humans don't change. 6,000 years ago people had the same set of emotions, the same desires. All the joy and scandal and pain and love that makes us who we are had existed for all people everywhere throughout time. There are so many stories for young minds to embrace. Lust & loss, sex, violence & laughter that they can identify with, IF they hear the stories behind the names & dates. I was the kid who got in trouble for asking how Columbus could discover a place if people already lived there. And for bringing up Vikings in Canada..My mom loved history & told me stories to encourage my interest, but when I brought up Sally Hemings in American history, I again got admonished. I loved human stories, so I went into Anthropology. The way history was taught, I just didn’t see the connections. It was boring. But, I studied it on my own. Academically I went from Anthropology to Archaeology, but then developed a disability & became unable to work as an Archaeologist. So, I went back to school & got a degree in history. I found college history courses to be amazing. I don't know if it's ego & ideas of exceptionalism. Maybe we weren't willing to own our mistakes and failures. I don't know if we think we're protecting kids from the sex & violence of the past (the stuff they often want to hear the most about). In the 80s & 90s, it was really bad. It just wasn't about the stories. It's gotten better. I have a he junior. It's a little less western exclusive & a little more inclusive. There are teachers trying, successfully, to get kids into it by giving them something to relate to. It's far from perfect & the standardization makes it difficult for teachers to focus on areas they feel passionate about (as college professors do). It's why I don't get into teaching. It's constricting. But still better than when I was a kid. I think most historians would say they weren't inspired by what they learned in school. I wish I could change that.

Well, you gave Henry’s version of the Anne of Cleves story. The Anne of Cleves version goes like this: the man who painted her portrait was a renowned painter of the time and known to paint ACCURATE portraits. This is probably why he was tasked by Henry to paint this particular portrait. Also, he had to know that if he painted an inaccurate portrait, Henry would find out the moment he met Anne. Henry was likely to take his head in that case, so he would have no reason to produce an inaccurate portrait and every reason to produce an accurate one. It is said that Henry met Anne of Cleves for the first time dressed as a pauper and made a pass at her. She refused him rather strongly. He was used to being so dashing and charming that nobody refused him. At that point in time he had lost much of his looks… so he was offended that she was not attracted to him. He could not get past that. His pride was irrevocably damaged so he had to blame it on her and get rid of her somehow. She was not unattractive, but he could not be attracted to someone who had dared to reject him. I suppose she was lucky to get out of it with her life. She played it smart. Smart and beautiful. Too bad she had to deal with Henry.

From the portraits I've seen all the Castille-Aragon children had blue to blue-grey eyes and red to strawberry blonde hair and you're also correct that Anne of Cleves is described as having "yellow" hair.

(1) their son would've been king henry ix, and mary would've never sat on the throne - queen mary i ordered for the execution of hundreds of protestants in the name of catholicism; she also ordered the execution of her cousin, lady jane grey, as well as her husband, lord guildford dudley, because she was a protestant threat to her throne. (2) since anne boleyn wouldn't have been henry's queen, that means no elizabeth i - the same elizabeth whose rule saw the executions of hundreds of catholics, as well as the beheading of queen mary i of scotland, her cousin. (3) now, if prince arthur became king instead of henry, the lives of the thousands of people henry ordered to be killed would've been spared. 16th century england would've been more peaceful, and would've had less religious wars + no succession crisis that resulted in hundreds of deaths - royal, noble, and common blood combined. no henry viii, edward vi, lady jane grey, mary i, no elizabeth i. there would've been no need for the catholic, stuart rulers of scotland to come down to england, that means less lives taken as well. england's history would've still been bloody, but considerably a lot less.

I never understood the obsession with everything passing through the male line when the only parent of absolute certainty, in those days (and indeed until and including when Charles married Diana) was the mother. There's at least one English king, way back, who it is believed was NOT the son of his royal father. If everything passed via the female line there would have been no need for the obsession with Royal brides (including Diana) being virgins and having to be inspected to make sure they were.

Christianity was a really impractical religion when it came to securing heirs for a king, Henry was desperate and did whatever it took in an attempt to get an heir. Islam was certainly more practical for rulers back then, being able to take several wives.

Catherine of Aragon was described as a beautiful, petite woman who had gray-blue eyes and russet-gold hair. According to Thomas More (way before the Anglican schism), she had everything a woman should have and few could compete with her beauty. She resembled her mother, Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Castile. Incidentally, Catherine was descended from two English princesses - Philippa of Lancaster and her half-sister, Catherine of Lancaster, after whom she was named.

Also, The Spanish Princess on Starz was accurate on the way she would’ve looked (unfortunately that's all it was accurate on, except that Arthur and she consummated their marriage because I believe they did. She was politically savvy. Her parents are my ancestors.)

I am of Spanish decent too, if you look at the picture attached to my name you can guess my family’s name. I don’t have any relatives from Mexico, Southern America or the Caribbean, we are European imports. That doesn’t make me any lesser or better, it just gets old in the states when all people of Spanish descent are thought to be dark featured with brown eyes. This was brilliant work. The sum total of all these poor womens' lives was 212 years. With the average age on death being 35 years. Although Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves seemingly escaped the most severe punishments, the stress of living with the horrendous monster, Catherine at one time was hours away from the stake and Anne of Cleves ( who was an oil painting compared to the repulsive and morbidly obese deranged old tyrant ) suffered unimaginable humiliations alone in a foreign country and this must have taken a very heavy toll on her health.

Remember we don't know what she looked like. I hate to be the nay sayer, but we just don't have any portraits from her lifetime. Henry had them all destroyed. We have a coin, that imo doesn't look like the portrait used here (it's the standard & a beautiful painting but she didn't sit for it). the famous B necklace painting was created somewhere in the 16th century, by an unknown artist, probably after the scandal had settled, possibly even after the reigns of Henry, Edward Vi, Lady Jane & Mary I, when Anne's daughter took the throne. It may have been commissioned by Elizabeth, who was a toddler when her mom died. The painter probably never laid eyes on Anne. But, it's the resonating interpretation of her that we have. I'm sure there's similarity. It doesn't really matter what she looked like, this gives us a chance to imagine & connect with the woman in a way that doesn't happen without the visual. It's nice to have, I just feel like people need to know it's not a contemporary portrait. It sucks to live with the unknown but Anne deserves the blank truth over a probably fictional image.

Yeah, apparently court factions wanted it to be Katherine Willoughby because she was old blood from Spain and in England. They thought she'd be easier to say back to the Catholic church than Catherine Parr.

I doubt it. She was good with him & knew when to back down and how to behave publicly. He had a legitimate heir. Both wives were killed for supposed infidelity & I don’t see Catherine doing that, even with her feelings for Seymour. He didn’t just randomly murder women. He fought with Katherine for YEARS trying to end his marriage & be with Anne. He seemed to have nothing but resentment for her, but execution never even came up. He was convinced of the betrayal of the 2 wives he had executed. A betrayal that in addition to being personally humiliating, could have led to another man’s child on the English throne. I really don’t believe Anne was guilty of anything, but Henry could be manipulated pretty easily & I’m sure he believed it. Katherine Howard never should have been more than a well treated mistress & I genuinely don’t understand why he married her. She could have made him feel young & been his rose without a thorn without the marriage. I think she was just very light after he’d been through a very difficult period. I wish someone had stepped in, maybe her aunt Elizabeth (Anne Boleyn’s mom) & relegated her to mistress so any flings wouldn’t be a threat to the English dynasty. As long as Parr kept some distance from Seymour, I think she’d have been fine. Seymour probably would have married Elizabeth, and he was Henry’s friend & the heir’s uncle, so they’d have been around each other often but both were experienced courtiers who knew how to play the game.

If I recall correctly, he actually signed a warrant for her arrest after she had voiced opinions that differed from his regarding religion. One of her servants found the warrant and she was able to convince him that she had said what she said to learn from him and encourage discussion and he dropped the issue.

@@TheFellowshipoftheCats - I am not sure if their was a warrant but the courtiers reported to him that she was studying the New Religion emerging from Europe (Lutherism & Calvinism) and could very well have come to a bad end. She was also friends with the martyr Anne Askew I think her name was, who was executed for promoting the new religion. However, her nursing abilities impressed Henry as she was the only one who could dress his ulcerated leg painlessly and this probably saved her.

Catherine of Aragon was not only the smartest of all his wives, but also a very courageous and beloved queen. She was fair skin, blond hair and blue eyed (like all the family of her mother Isabelle of Castile). On movies not only her personality is misrepresented, but also physically (dark hair, dark eyes).

She knew she could not say no to Henry's temperament and she she knew what to say and how to say it to soothe her husband's intentions. Besides being a queen and mother to his children, she was an author. With her wisdom she could have been anything if she was alive today. Anything from a politician, a professor of theology, a psychiatrist. You name it. The sad thing is that she was limited to what women were pushed into. Remember men considered them inferior. Or the weaker sex.

We don’t know for certain that the portraits have been accurately ascribed, with the possible exception of Anne of Cleeves, who was painted by Holbein. Extant portraits of Boleyn were destroyed and the portraits that remain were painted after her death. Hardly very accurate therefore. She looks fair-skinned in her portraits whereas contemporary accounts describe her as swarthy, olive-skinned, with very dark hair and black eyes. Cromwell called her ‚the night crow’. The portrait of Catherine Howard shows her looking like a woman in her thirties, whereas she was barely out of her teens when Henry had her butchered. It was fashionable to have a small mouth, so all the portraits showed the subjects with mouths far too small for their faces. This tells us something and nothing.

Remember we don't know what she looked like. I hate to be the nay sayer, but we just don't have any portraits from her lifetime. Henry had them all destroyed. We have a coin, that imo doesn't look like the portrait used here (it's the standard & a beautiful painting but she didn't sit for it). the famous B necklace painting was created somewhere in the 16th century, by an unknown artist, probably after the scandal had settled, possibly even after the reigns of Henry, Edward Vi, Lady Jane & Mary I, when Anne's daughter took the throne. It may have been commissioned by Elizabeth, who was a toddler when her mom died. The painter probably never laid eyes on Anne. But, it's the resonating interpretation of her that we have. I'm sure there's similarity. It doesn't really matter what she looked like, this gives us a chance to imagine & connect with the woman in a way that doesn't happen without the visual. It's nice to have, I just feel like people need to know it's not a contemporary portrait. It sucks to live with the unknown but Anne deserves the blank truth over a probably fictional image.

Please do Henry II Of England, and Eleanor Of Aquitaine. I've always wondered what they really looked like, and their tomb effigies were supposed to have actually been taken from their own death masks, but it's hard to imagine them in flesh and blood from the effigies, and as young rulers And the only thing that's wrong with your recreation of the wives, is that Katharine Parr's hair was a golden blonde, not red. It was remarked about many times, and when she was exhumed after burial, locks of her golden blonde hair were taken from her skull, and there is a lock of it at this time, that is in a museum.

The pigments that were used in the paint tended to darken over time. So in her portrait it makes sense that her hair would appear darker than it really was.

He had brain damage from a very bad fall at a joust. Unconscious for 2 hours. Never the same man again after that. He became very bad tempered for example.

@@ChalcedonXXX true. 24 years with Katherine, then the other 5 all within 10 years. I do believe when Katherine hit menopause he panicked about having a legitimate heir & turned to Anne. Then, the jousting accidents which definitely caused permanent chronic pain in a leg injury that never healed. The leg injury effected his mobility & the man famous for his athletic body (especially calves) started putting on weight which led to other health issues. He would have been in constant pain & have lost his confidence in his appearance, a combination which could make anyone bitterc& angry. But he was knocked out hard, accounts differ as to how long but it was enough to worry everyone he wouldn't make it and when he came through his personality was certainly different. He became a tyrant. He probably did have a tbi, but we can't be sure. But there's no question Henry was a different man after 1536.

He was a bright, charming, and handsome man when he was young. But injuries from jousting accidents crippled his leg and gave him ulcers that left him in pain for the rest of his life. It's possible that he also got brain damage from his jousting accidents, too. (This is heavily debated) His leg injury also prevented him exercising and contributed to his weight gain, as well as him also likely eating food for comfort as he got increasing sick and desperate. Of course, this doesn't excuse his behaviour. But it least it makes it more understandable.

I don't know. I think fear was part of that. She'd known Katherine and Anne. We don't really know what was going through her mind, and she died so soon into the marriage. Henry sad great at 2-3 year relationships. It probably would have turned if given time. I do believe her death & the birth of Edward made him permanentl idolize her but I hate when people say she was his true love. All relationships are great early on. He would have been dealing with chronic pain, a probable personality changing tbi, massive weight gain & other health issues with her if she'd lived, and I don't think he would have been pleasant in the long term.
