The truth is Henry didn't really think she was ugly either. He decided to reenact one of his favorite plays and dress as a servant for the first time meeting her. According to the play Anne was somehow supposed to recognize that Henry was king, fall head over heels and kiss him. Obviously she didn't, so Henry and his hurt feelings decided to spread the story that she was ugly.
@Xnhl
@Xnhl 3 жыл бұрын
@@trackgirl2187 Right, if anyone was "revolting" at that point, it would have been an overweight Henry with a smelly leg ulcer. But we would think him a narcisst nowadays... nothing was ever his fault. They also say, that Anne was dumb. However, she might have suffered under an even then backwards view on the education of women, esp if they were expected to be on top of some other court later in life. She had enough common sense to just yield to Henry's wishes regarding divorce and as she was later welcomed at court and treated respectfully by her "stepchildren" , we can only assume, that she wasn't that unpleasant overall.

I’m happy that Catherine Parr became the mother to all 3 kids of Henry. She knew that their father was cruel to their mothers and she became a mother figure to them, not even thinking to keep the throne to herself or her family.
@cxyuin3762
@cxyuin3762 2 жыл бұрын
Ah well yes, Catherine was truly a mother figure to them. But if i‘m not mistaken she remarried with Thomas Seymour and took elizabeth into her household for quite awhile where she got sexually harrased from her husband. At the end it turned out that Catherine was witnessing the somewhat „abuse“ and didn’t do anything about it. So i would say she also wasn’t the best mother figure….

Culpepper was 29 years old, and she was 19. In addition, there is evidence that she was under manipulation by him (he was charged with abuse and murder). In fact, the "love" letter that Katherine wrote has been reviewed and they found many errors that were not shown in the other letters, apart from the fact that she was trembling while writing it due to the carelessness of her writing and grammar of that then.

@Hi Lifg christopher mont: ‘everyone praises the lady’s beauty both of face and body’. another ambassador said the portrait of anne (which was considered very pretty at the time) was a true likeness. look up how henry and her met - he tried to surprise her and she didn’t recognise him and was frightened, which probably humiliated him (pathetic man that he was) and he decided from that day he could not be married to her.
@Laramaria2
@Laramaria2 3 жыл бұрын
@Hi Lifg her looks are a great mystery... There are many different reports about it... Most people believe that the reports saying that Anne was ugly came from Henry's friends and supporters but were lies to favor Henry's case. Many people believe that if the painting was misleading, Henry wouldn't have allowed Holbein to keep his head 😅 According to Dr. Kat from "reading the past", there was a beauty standard in Tudor court, so if she was ugly she wouldn't be allowed in court because it was required to be kinda of an ornament... And beauty is subjective anyway, so it is kinda hard to tell 😅 I'm very inclined to believe that she was pretty, but Henry found her boring because she was more quite, reserve than he would like her to be and didn't know anything about music, dance, courtly love and all other things Henry liked and there is the "first meeting disaster" too 😬

It’s poetic justice that Anne, one of the wronged wives, gave birth to a girl who became one of England’s greatest leaders. Jane seymour’s son she gave to Henry didn’t make it past 20 years old when he was a prince. So all these years waiting for a male heir were a waste for Henry.

With all due respect she wasn't a child in that time she was an adult you didn't live for as long think it was fourty at the most you can't put modern thinking on historical it doesn't work like that and as for grooming she wanted to be queen fathers groomed their daughter to marry well and children were promised to older men as for Anne its believed she was unfaithful to Henry that's also the other reason she was beheaded
@doom3798
@doom3798 3 жыл бұрын
@@thedougdimmadomeownerofthe9332 that’s wrong, children were still children and considered children back then, only noble houses arranged for their children to be married for political reasons but they werent to be together until they were at least 16 - also the life expectancy thing is misleading because it takes into account child mortality rates which were much higher, as 12% of children died in their first year. that’s why the average age of life is so low. but the average age of death in medieval times was actually 60s. idk why people believe that old people just didnt exist back then lmao its a really ridiculous myth when you think about it

Catherine of Aragon: underrated, very intelligent and gracious. Anne Boleyn: Clever, manipulative, powerful but vulnerable. Vilified out of proportion; she was just trying to survive in a cruel world to women. Jane Seymour: didn't live long enough to p*** Henry off by showing her own opinions, but certainly had them. Might have been a decent queen if given a chance. Anne of Cleves: my favorite! Henry catfished her, not the other way around. She actually was very strong-willed and went on to live a wealthy, independent life after her divorce. Katherine Howard: Also vilified, but she was just a kid and in way over her head. She yet didn't have the political savvy of Anne, and ultimately met the same fate. Catherine Parr: Also strong-willed and unyielding. Kept her head in the worst circumstances. Was a decent stepmom to Elizabeth and probably helped shape her into the woman and ruler she became.

In the story of Henry VIII, Jane Seymore is inevitably given the least attention when arguably she is the most important. Unprecedented among Queens of the time, like Ann or Elisabeth Woodville etc., who would immediately tried to consolidate power by maneuvering to get their relatives elevated in court, Jane did none of that. Instead she insisted that Mary (who was declared a bastard by Henry) be reinstated to her titles and thus back into the line of succession and prevented Henry from disinheriting Elizabeth after he beheaded her mother - both of which actually doesn't benefit her at all politically. She just had a big heart. Thus, for better or for worse, Jane had a direct hand in who would become the next 3 monarchs of England - her son Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth 1.

Anna of Cleves might not have suffered an ending that was as cruel as the ones of Katherine Howard or Anne Boleyn, but just imagine living with the knowledge that you are married to a man who could end your life at literally any moment just because he is not satisfied with the way you look... I bet she was, despite being upset and disappointed for obvious reasons, quite relieved when Henry divorced her.

Just as Anne is almost always portrayed to be a pale, redhead when in fact she had olive, slightly dark, skin with long black hair. She was also very tall but is usually shown to be dainty.

And if not for Anne Boleyn, Catherine of Aragon won't die lonely, Mary Tudor won't be bloody Mary, thousands of protestants will be saved from her wrath, she'll be happily married with kids but even in deathbed she can't be happy because Anne's daughter lived a longer life than Mary.(which isn't Elizabeth's fault but she disrespected her half sister's wish of being buried next to her mother.)Don't get me wrong, I love Elizabeth too, but sadly, I can't say the same for her mother

I’m not big on blaming other women for their downfalls despite each woman replacing each other on the throne. Bottom line is if Henry loved Catherine or Anne like he said he did then they wouldn’t have been put through all of that and wouldn’t have had competition with each other. Period.

@@elamplough1 To be honest the things that happened to Catherine because of Anne was bitchy but Anne wasn’t a bitch. She never intended to hurt anyone, it was her father using her as a political gain and she just happened to be good at it. She was a very strong, intelligent, witty woman and she gave birth to arguably one of England’s greatest monarchs. She changed history in so many ways and without her the world would be very different

Anne Boleyn is my favorite wife. She was an accomplished woman and a religious reformer. I have tremendous respect for Catherine of Aragon, Anne of Cleves, and Catherine Parr. Katherine Howard’s life was tragic. She was not a frivolous that has been portrayed on historical fiction. I did not care for Jane Seymour. She was not intelligent, and not a great beauty. Eustace Chapuys described her as such. He didn’t think she was a virgin. He liked her because of her kindness towards Mary. He also wanted the concubine, Anne Boleyn, out of court. He really hated her.

The best queen on the series The Tudors is Catherine of Aragon❤️❤️ who sufferd the most died a sorry, lonely and painful death I cried watching that scene of her death bed, loved by all( the people), loved God, a true believer of the faith and in God, mistreated by her sorry excuse of a man she loved seriously I never understood how she could still love Henry after all he did to her, after all the pain and tears he put her through, seperating her from her daughter for 4 and a half years. Honestly I love Catherine of Aragon ❤️ she was a fighter, a good Queen and a good mother, forever in our heart's long live the QUEEN.
