@piercefilm >>> FWIW: I remember flying over the Wilmington studios when I was in the US Coast Guard. I was an enlisted Aircrewman, working & flying on the Lockheed HC-130H Hercules airplanes. We were on a training flight, doing touch-and-go's at that airport mentioned in this vid.

Dave Jones worked on Galactica 1980, I think. Lorne Peterson worked on BSG. He mentions it briefly in my Star Wars segment.

DeLaurentis should've just cut out the middle man and went to Toho is the message I'm getting here.
@piercefilm Жыл бұрын
No, he should have gone to Hollywood and spent more money for quality. He wanted to do it all at his own studio for cheap...

@@piercefilm Beg to differ. You want a suitmation movie, you go to the kings of suitmation.
@johnnhoj6749 Жыл бұрын
@@piercefilm It was generally reckoned at the time that the sequel to a film like King Kong would make, at most, two thirds as much as the original. It wouldn't be thought worth making a sequel unless it was significantly cheaper - which was why sequels then rarely had the same level of cast or production values. King Kong Lives was also made a decade after the film of which it was the direct sequel, so it had even more going against it commercially.

@@piercefilm that wouldn't have been a problem if he brought the equipment necessary to create the dailies there at the studio. That seems to be the biggest problem (which then led to others). But this is Dino we're talking about, and it would be an understatement to say he was a little stubborn.
@TheRealNormanBates Жыл бұрын
@@johnnhoj6749 I am still kind of befuddled that Dino thought it was a good idea. Granted, *King Kong (1976)* made quite a bit when it came out.. but to do a sequel 10 years later?! I could understand maybe doing a remake of *Son of Kong* (as Kong was deader than disco). Then again, it's kind of like Sir Lew Grade funding *Raise the Titanic.* In the words of a well known nerd, "What was he _thinking?!"_

Hmmmm... Does that mean that union shops are better? Or that management is stupid!?
@TheRealNormanBates Жыл бұрын
It is really a roll of the dice. Are Unions better? Yes and no. I imagine there can be more professionalism, as someone in a union would have to have some qualifications and a work history. At the same time, look at what happened with James Cameron with the UK union crew who kept screwing with him during the filming of *Aliens.* _Yeesh!_

The model makers were all great, but De Laurentiis productions always mixed in his Italian crews. Same with Flash Gordon 1980. The Italian and British crews had miscommunications which caused waste of money and time.

Worst King Kong movie I ever watched, Should have went to "Aliens" or "Platoon"

I was one of 5 Dino Delaurentiis Chefs. Gigi was the Delaurentiis personal chef in Beverly Hills. Giuliano Gallo was the Chef for Rafaella Delaurentiis in China, Bilal Saad, Lorenzo and I were the chefs for all of the productions going on in Wilmington. Delaurentiis has his own catering services so the chefs names were never accredited at the movie credits it was always Catering by DEG Food Show. I always deemed that unfair that our names were never accredited at the end of each film. We work such as hard as members of the crew. At time only two of us will drive the catering truck to almost unreasonable roads. When we were filming King King Lives on locations in the Mountains of Jelico Tennessee, we has to set up tents with tables and chairs to accommodate the cast and crew and 500 extras. We had to cook for up to 800 people and sometimes special diets for famous actors. We had to make sure that we had food for the crew and extras. Sometimes working 16 hours per day 6 days a week. Sometimes there were five movies been make at the same time. Marie, Year of the Dragon, Silver Bullet , Cat’s eyes, Blue Velvet, Maximum overdrive, Raw Deal, Bedroom Window, From the Hips, No Mercy, Manhunter, it was crazy and I was about to collapse dead tire and I worked in all of those movies and a few more and not once we were credited for.At that time we didn’t really care because we were making good money. But I never thought that someday I was going to be able to talk to my children and grandchildren about my experience in the Hollywood of the east, Wilmington. If it won’t be because of pictures I took back then with my Polaroid camera I won’t be able to back up my stories with Dino Delaurentiis, Stephen King and a vast list of celebrities of that era, today either retired or dead.
