Never realized that the stunts in the cage sequence in Time Bandits were done with puppets! That was masterful work -- totally convincing.

The blue spaceship was blown up from the nose section, tail, and rocket module of a Micronauts Mobile Exploration Lab, matched detail for detail. It's funny because the toys shown on the bedroom floor included various Micronauts and all of the M.E.L. bits...except these specific parts, which obviously must have been snagged for making the props from!

Even with 30+ years in production experience, there are shots from these films I'm just now realizing were miniatures/models. I need to go watch both again. Brilliant work!

Making the miniature ship's rigging out of chain was a great choice. Chain just looks more "massive" in the way it moves.

4:16 I have to wonder if this didn't have some inspiration upon Miyazaki, as it reminds me of Howl's Moving Castle.

Just strong wire skeletons with stops on elbow and knee joints to prevent them bending the wrong way, the heads are sculpted in plastelene , moulded and cast in resin. I like to use Humbrol mat for painting . The miniature costumes I make like full size costumes, the fabric has to be finer to get scale, I even make little wire hangers to keep them in shape. I use mohair for the hair, its easy to dye and shape and the scale works well.

No era mejor grabar en México y ya?
@piercefilm4 күн бұрын
Mexico is probably too dangerous. There is more control in Europe. It's not supposed to be totally real. Miniatures and studio sets are used as a style choice by the director as far as I can tell.

Lovely as always. I was struck by the still image at 4:58. How did a model of the Marauder from the Buck Rogers movie/tv show end up in a clip about special effects in Terry Gilliam movies? I got 'Star Crash flashbacks' from that :-)

That was for a scene that got cut from the film. Same with the "Hand Trees" miniature set.

AI is coming for my job, and I build all of what you see here with software.. The sad reality is that the only reason someone paid a lot of money to get these sets built is for some reason they had an idea it would look more “real”… which simply isn’t true anymore. AI isn’t quite there yet thank god , but it will be soon. Sooner than we are all prepared for. You can’t build miniatures and have the materials behave properly to physical effects forces. Stiffness doesn’t scale linearly. Great and amazing work btw. Very talented team… I wish we lived in a world where your skills had permanent residency.

It's kinda down to the few directors who appreciate a stylistic "look" with miniatures. Like doing a stop motion film instead of computer animated. At this point it's great to see miniatures, even if you know it is a model you can appreciate people actually making a thing that exists. And you can go see them in museums (Film Museum of Miniatures in France), which is not possible with CGI or AI. Also you can bid on model props from films if you have the money, and own a piece of cinema history!

The trailer has some finished shots in it. But many of the miniature shots were edited out of the film to cut down the running time. Hopefully they show up in a longer version on the Blu-ray.

I always thought that they used a matte painting when the tidal wave enters the harbor. It just looks so stationery with the lighting, you don’t really see any movement, other than the wave itself. Have to rewatch this movie soon.
