Bruce’s redemption here is criminally underrated. He’s only an actor who folds like a lawn chair when they first encounter dinosaurs on the island, being too scared to even be near them. But when push comes to shove he ends up becoming a real version of the swashbuckling heroes he used to play, swinging from a vine with a Tommygun to save the day.

the music here is critical- but its not bombastic. I can't explain what about the music here works. I think its the sympathetic tone, almost like saying "I'm sorry but you are at the bottom of the food chain here and no one cares about your situation." The flare going out was symbolic. Fire is mankind's first weapon to keep predators at bay- the harnessing of fire was mans first step away from being at the mercy of nature. The flare dying here symbolizes their last protection ending and them being left alone with cruel nature.

I think the music almost frames the scene from the bug’s perspective. At times, it’s hardly noticeable, and doesn’t carry the tension of a big orchestral score in a 90s action film. It’s eerie yet relaxed, it drifts along listing; to me, that’s what this meal is to the bugs. It’s just a meal. They don’t see it as an action scene; they’re following instinct. The bugs don’t register the fear in the human’s faces of voices & they don’t show any emotion themselves outwardly. They’re eerily relaxed to their task at hand.

Jack Black going berserk is absolutely relatable. The one thing that is guaranteed to overtake fear is rage. I remember there was a time I was cooking and all of a sudden a swarm of roaches interrupted me and went crazy flying all over the kitchen, and I have a paralyzing fear of roaches. I was alone too so no one would be able to help me. But what happened after was that I went ham with the bug spray, flip flops, and opened all the cabinets and hunted a good few of them down with all the tools I could pick up. I'm sure everybody goes through that one 'fuck it and fuck all of you' moment in their life at least once

one of my favourite aspects of this scene (outside of the fact its absolutely horrifying and facinating at the same time) is the fact that the musical score plays such a background, almost unnoticed role in this scene, it's so subtle, spending it's time building the anticipation and itself without getting louder to then climax with the dramatic hero theme that kicks off when the rest of the crew arrives. it's stuff like that, that even when there are movies that are released today that have lots of flaws. moments like this remind me why i fell in love with cinema in the first place.

@@MasonBryant No, it doesn't. The employees in the CGI industry are simply given way to little time by the executives to actually use their skills to the highest extent. It has been this way since the early 2010s. That's why for example davy jones still looks better than what marvel is putting out. Combine a unrealistic deadline with overtime and a horrible work enviroment and you get bad CGI. But sure "wOkEnEsS" is the problem.

In my opinion the best scene in this movie. There are so many really great scenes in this movie but for turning a action adventure film so far into a horror movie for a short few mins they did so well, the creatures react and move so well, it so scary how they seemingly fell into a empty pit/cave then they start to hear the putter patter of tiny not so tiny feet and appendages hitting the ground jumping from wall to wall, all working against each other but working together to get there meal, they move robotically, like they are programmed for these situations, god how horrifying

You could tell Peter Jackson was a huge fan of the original film, given that 2 moments in his remake (the Brontosaurus Stampede and the Bug Chasm) were based on scenes that were cut from the OG and have since been lost. I know people critique the film for its length, particularly stemming from the first maybe 30 to 45 minutes while they’re in New York and out at sea, but to me, it really adds to the tone of the film and properly introducing the characters for the most part. Particularly contributing to the suspenseful buildup of them venturing towards the unknown, and the impact of what is found on the island is just as significant to the on screen characters, as it is to the audience watching. I also just love how cool they made New York look from the time era they were portraying, which looked like the 1920’s to 1930’s. We also don’t see Jack Black take on too many roles like this, if ever. So it was a real treat to see his range as an actor, which to me, was an exceptional performance done by him. I just love this film so much, and the video game based on the movie is also a hidden gem.

Ironically the only parts I like of the story is everything from the boat to when they leave the island. It's a golden blueprint really, horror/action in a fictional "forgotten island/hidden ecosystem" that allows you to have dinosaurs and what not with the cast trying to push through it. If only the Jurassic Park movies were more like the novel, and kept a horror theme.

This scene is much better than 99% of current horror movies, a movie with a good script, serious, entertaining and spectacular, and you know what? The death of the characters is taken seriously, it seems ridiculous to mark this, but in today's cinema if someone dies it must be done without blood and jokes at the end so that what could have been a good moment is lost, that is really sad, visually better than all current marvel products.

This scene is responsible for my fear of bugs. I saw this as a kid, and it was absolutely horrifying - far more disturbing than any R-rated slasher flick I saw growing up.

That's good storytelling. Lot's of good friends are dead, they're stuck and hurt, and they've lost all the footage they had made so far rendering everything futile. So just when you thought things couldn't get any worse...

@@viefcheesecake Lol. I just read about this scene, the bug effects were added later - jack black was told to just go buck wild swinging at imaginary bugs. He said he loved it

My friend and I LOVED this scene when this movie first dropped. So disturbing and fascinating, but also meme worthy, like Jack Black being waist deep in bugs and swinging his gun over his head like some pirate or buccaneer, like wtf is going on there LOL, or the kid just spraying his weapon at adrian brody and miraculously hitting all of the locusts, its just outrageously hilarious, I love it. Perfect little break of humor from andy serkis getting his head and limbs swallowed. Awesome scene and movie.
