Glenda Jackson could play (McKellen's) Hamlet's mother. A phenomenal film, tv and stage actress and person, Oscar winner, then gave it up to serve as a member of parliament (in the UK) for decades, THEN returned to the stage and played King Lear. She will survive us all.
@daniellamcgee42513 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly! An elderly family member of mine acted in repetory theater with Glenda Jackson in 1962, just before her break out role as Elizabeth I. Apparently she was pretty much the same brilliant, talented, strong willed, and intimidating woman back in her 20s! Ian Mckellen also had extraordinary stage presence and gravitas back in 1963 playing Henry V, before he got his Actor's Equity Card and turned pro., also.
@telectronix13683 жыл бұрын
@@daniellamcgee4251 I wonder if they were ever on stage together before. To the search engine!
@daniellamcgee42513 жыл бұрын
@@telectronix1368 Yes, both Glenda Jackson and Ian Mckellen were definitely on stage prior to 1962, and 1963 respectively. Both were in lead roles in those years, and had experience. My family member played 'boy' to Ian Mckellen's Henry V, and lead in a few plays opposite Glenda Jackson for a few months.( A ridiculous combination!) To get an Actor's Equity Card took 2 years of repertory theater- meaning performing in theater groups at an amateur level in different places in England wherever you could find a place. It was gruelling. Six nights a week, and Saturday matinee, performing, while day times were rehearsing the new play. London Theaters ran the same way (probably still do), but had longer runs of each performance. Whereas repertory theater could change the performed play every week. Shakespeare was always on the programme! Also, to get into repetory theater most people had completed studying acting courses such as at RADA or the Guildhall, etc. Performances of the big name acting schools would get brief reviews written about them in newspapers and acting magazines, so a keen researcher may find evidence of Ian Mckellen and Glenda Jackson on stage in articles of the late 1950s. If acting work wasn't available in London, professional actors would perform with other theater groups elsewhere. As an actor's professional work becomes extensive, they don't tend to mention their amateur work, which is unfortunate. Although when I last looked, some years ago, Ian Mckellen had professional photos of his 1963 Henry V , and other early work on his website, including highschool. I have had a little attempt to find evidence of Glenda Jackson's amateur work to no avail! But I haven't checked reviews, or her schools. What I do know is that by the time they become professional, they had years of acting and stage experience. Some people were naturally good and had stage presence to start with, others, like Judi Dench, had to work harder! Sorry for the essay! I really tried hard to make this short!

English trained actors of Ian Mckellen's era learned how to play old and young parts. Versatility was key. Mckellen has played Hamlet before, and is young of heart. If Glenda Jackson (a woman) could play King Lear (in the traditional male role) at aged 83 years, after decades of a career in politics, I am pretty sure KcKellen could play Hamlet. :)

Australia has given several big gifts to the US, Rupert Murdoch, Ken Ham, and Hugh Jackman. We'd like Hugh back please.
Murdoch and Ham were gifts in the same sense that burning dog shite left on ones doorstep is a gift.
