I was also in the service during Carters’s term. My memory and experience was quite a bit different. It was a time of austerity and President Carter tried to set an example of belt tightening by wearing a sweater in the White House, telling people to turn down their thermostats to 68°, and by capping the military pay increase at 5.5% even though inflation was double digits. In addition he used his authority to distribute 75% of that increase from basic pay which every soldier gets, to housing and rations which goes disproportionately to those with large numbers of dependents. I am pleased that it worked out well for you but just know it came at the expense of average soldier, sailor, airman with few or no dependents. I pretty much lost ground for the 4 years I was in and then watched when Reagan took over and the military started getting substantial, across the board raises year after year. Even so President Carter was an honorable man who wanted what’s best for the country and I would take him ANY day over a President who cares for nothing except for how he can use the office to benefit himself.

It's kind of funny that Jimmy Carter, a well-respected Christian and philanthropist, and John McCain, a well-respected military veteran both sort of had a part to play in this. Trump despises Christians and Military service men and women because he knows he would never and could never "condescend" to these two honorable ways of life (if done right).
