The goal: Catch a king mackerel fishing in the Oak Island surf. Yes, a lofty goal but is it unobtainable? We've caught big blues, sharks and even tarpon in the Oak Island surf so why not a king mackerel?
In this video we will attempt a few different rig set ups to see which one will work best to get live bait out deep enough to hook a king. We'll look at the rig setups that could work and the ones that were complete fails. And hey, we even catch a fish.

Interesting! And love this channel! I'm a Hatteras Island surf fishing veteran and have visited Oak Island for family vacations for years. My wife and I finally pulled the trigger on a house down there near where the old pier used to be. Look forward to learning all the local spots and mostly to just walking off the deck onto the beach and casting whenever I feel like it! Maybe we'll cross paths and share stories. Fully understand about all the work for an 18" bluefish, but it's way better than real work. I'm very familiar with casting 8 and bait with a 13' heaver all day just to catch blues, but you can't catch anything if you don't have a bait in the water. I have a kite I've used for live bait fishing from the surf and have also used balloon rigs, but the wind would have to cooperate from almost due north on Oak Island. Looking forward to trying that someday with conditions cooperate.

Your second rig is how we did it from piers in the 60s and 70s.

I’ve been thinking about trying a pin rig off the beach but thinking a much taller anchor pole to lift the anchor line higher and kayaking the anchor out and drop it on the outer bar somewhere like ramp 38 where there is a wide deep trough running inside the bar , parallel to the beach.

Very interesting and entertaining. Here's what I suggest. Get yourself a kite to fly your live bait out into deep water, or use a drone ! You will need a much larger reel 'cause you are going to want to fly your bait out 400 yards.

they make stronger swivels for example 250lbs instead of regular light swivels.

Kings are useally in deeper / clearer water that water looks to dirty, good try tho any day fishing is a good day , also invest in better terminal tackle those ones your using I’ll use for catching bait but anything bigger ill use 80lb swivels atleast

I've never used a trolley rig..I always use a weighted floating rig and it basically works the same way

Thanks for showing how you do this. Did you catch a king? I was thinking using a kayak or a kite this summer. I am further south in Florida. There are piers but it’s just so crowded I prefer to be alone and do it.

I haven’t caught a king from the beach but have caught Spanish, sharks and one time a tarpon which probably isn’t unusual for Florida but is for NC

I've had this idea for there for a while. I'm going to put my anchor out on low tide so I can walk it out farther. And run a pvc rod extender on my pier cart giving me 17 feet clearance. Get a pinfish, or blue and run it on a standard release like we do on the pier.

@@SandsintheSurf Get bait farther out but more importantly keep people out of the obviously casted out lines...Well then there's the swimmers that gravitate into them too😂. Hitting OI in June will see.

You need to try slide lining, it was developed by the Australians. Look up slide lining bait fishing. It takes a 12 to 15 foot surf rod, a slide line wire rig and a live bait. There is plenty of videos on youtube.

Great video, it’s good to see you showed your mistakes and successes. What is that orange release device? Do you have a link as to where you got it from or is it home made?

I actually purchased that locally in the store on the pier. I’ve heard them called pop offs. If you search king mackerel pop off, or king mackerel trolley rig, or pin rig you’ll find them.

I liked your video minus 1 thing.. I would have either threaded the eyes of my bait fish, or I would have hooked through the gill plate.

Hi there, I was wondering why people around SC/NC used this rig with an anchor line and hook line separately? Why not use a single rig? I'm from Texas, and we use a similar rig for bull reds, but just one big fishing pole, main line to leader line (80+lbs mono/fluoro), T off for a hook with swivel while the main leader ends with a spider weight at the end. The only difference I see is that your rig allows the fish to swim around without the weight behind, but really only toward or away from where the anchor line is, and not really deeper or to the side (meaning, if I can cast it with my bull red rig far enough.. what's the difference). Also, does this rig hold the fish well? My concern is that the swivel can cut through the anchor line. Thanks!

I can’t speak for people fishing the pier. The advantage I see from my perspective, a surf fisherman, I can cast an anchor weight (actually now I use a heavy Sputnik) really far. I could never cast a live fish as far. Not even half as far. So for me, I can sail the weight, then let the fish do the work.
