For the final video of our second season here at Sands in the Surf, we thought we would take a look at some fun facts and history of Oak Island. We will look at everything from geography to town and island names. We'll even through in a few helpful fishing tips. We will be back in March to start Season 3 of Sands in the Surf, fishing on Oak Island!

I lived in the area my whole life and ill tell u from first hand experience the colder months produce excellent fishing!!! Not so much for surf or offshore but the backwaters! Especially trout! The cold months are my favorite time of the year to fish.

Thanks for taking the time to post videos about OI. My wife and I went to Topsail this past weekend looking for houses, but decided to take a day to visit OI. Now we are looking there instead. enjoying your fishing videos and trivia based videos, they help get a knowledge base of where we now want to buy a second home for retirement.

I grew up on going to Long beach I remember fishing off the long beach pier at setting spot nets off the beach alot more fish back then

My family moved there in 1962. We used to "pull nets" also. We caught a ridiculous amount of fish and basically subsisted off it to a large degree. Oak Island was very different back in the 80snwhen I was a kid running around there

Thanks for this. I enjoy all your videos. I've fished most of the places you mention over the past few years coming to Oak Island for a week every June. Alas, this year it has been chosen by people I must abide by (my mother-in-law and wife) that this year we are trying Ocean Isle for the first time. I will still be watching and using your hints.

I drove by your house today, showing my friend that there are 2 islands on the island 15th and 28th. Looks like you're next door to Christine and Peter. They are wonderful people! Might want to take the home tag off of the map... Great video!

A little deeper history. Pre Oak Island. Long Beach politicians wanted a sewer system. And as I understand , it was voted down by the voters twice. Yaupon beach already had a sewer system in place. So by combining the two towns they no longer needed to vote on a new sewer system , only needed to expand it. So now there’s no longer a need for the vacant lots to perk. This made the value of the lots on Oak Island explode. Now I’m not speaking good or bad about the sewer system or Oak Island versus Long Beach. Or standing in the way of progress or anything like that. This is just some information as I recall it.

Serious but Silly question because it’s broad. I work remotely. If I have no mortgage/rent, can a family of four live there on $70,000?

Depends on how big a boat you want :) the bills here aren’t big in general, water can be but otherwise it’s not bad. I know people who probably earn less than that and live here with a mortgage so
