Midas wasn't just a myth, he was an actual king of Phrygia and his tomb and actual skeleton have been discovered and are on display in Turkey.The myth of the golden touch comes from the fact that Phrygia and the neighboring kingdom of Lydia (who invented money) were both very rich in alluvial gold which was panned in the rivers especially the Tmolus.

This was always one of my favorite myths. I remember being told this story from numerous sources: my elementary school, books, and the television show Wishbone. For some reason, this story always stuck with me but taught me a very valuable lesson.

King Midas of Phrygia was neighbor to rich King Croesus of Lydia. The invention of coins was from Lydia. These first coins were minted from electrum which is a naturally occurring alloy of gold & silver. The smelting of gold from electrum used a mixture of salt, clay brick dust and urine inside a crucible roasted to high temperature in a kiln.

I never knew the story of King Midas was Greco-Roman in origin. Every depiction I'd ever seen made it seem like it started in medieval Europe (the closest one came was that it was an unnamed satyr that granted the wish, but none of them ever mentioned Dionysus/Bacchus).

Just imagine if instead of turning his daughter to a Solid Gold Statue, she became a being made of Living Gold, where she was still able to move & talk, but couldn't feel anything due to her metal skin & body, and because of her body being metal she felt cold to the touch, and was strong & durable enough to smash stone without felling pain, but couldn't feel pleasure either, she couldn't even hug her own father for fear of crushing his spine, she probably would have felt like she was some kind of monster and began to hate her father for what he did to her, and without his daughter's love and the fact that she felt tormented, Midas would have still wanted to get rid of the golden touch.

In the version I heard, it was Apollo who "blessed" Midas with the Golden Touch after Midas cursed Apollo for raining golden sunlight down on the world. Once Midas had rid himself of the Golden Touch, Apollo gave him a donkey's ears so he'd always be reminded of what an ass he'd been. For years, King Midas hid these ears under a hat, and only his Barber knew the truth, but was sworn to secrecy on pain of death if he ever told a living soul. After several years, the barber couldn't keep the secret anymore, and went to the Riverbank, dug a hole, and said into the hole " King Midas has donkey's ears", before covering up the hole and going back home, feeling much better. But the Reeds on the River Bank had heard everything, and started to whisper the secret oh, so that soon the entire Kingdom knew. Pretty soon, it got back to the king, who by this point had learned some humility, and pardoned the Barbara, whereupon Apollo appeared, and changed Midas' ears back to normal.
