As a landscaper I’ve used a King of Spades spade for over 25 years. I’ve tried many brands of similarly shaped spade and it is the best in terms of heft, durability and quality of construction. Well worth the money. BTW, it wasn’t mentioned in the video by this spade (and really all cutting tools in the garden) perform much better if it’s sharpened before use and periodically as time goes by. The factory edge is okay, but a freshly sharpened edge is much better. I use a held held mini grinder for sharpening garden tools such as spades, digging shovels and hoes, etc. Good video!

I put this on my wish list last year, but my Honey bought me some subpar piece of junk, but I thanked him for it. Well today I tasked him with building a few flower beds...He attempted to use the wonderful gift he bought me. A few swear words later, he told me to order the King of Spades today and expedite the shipping...lol

Great product-and I can't wait to try your technique! At almost 70, however, my concern with tools is weight. I know a spade needs a certain heft. But I am looking for a border spade that's 4.5 to 5 lbs, tops. More and more, I notice, my heavy "last a lifetime" tools stay in the shed.

$170 for a spade is a tough pill to swallow. I made my own with $37 of material. It weighs 7.8lbs and welding was only $25-$50 depending on who you go to but mine was essentially free since I did the welding myself. Steel plate $17 Steel tubing (2 sizes shaft/handle) $15 Cutting/grinding wheel, rubber, fasteners, welding material $5 Obviously you need the tools to do this cheaply. Welder, grinder, pipe cutter (can be done with cut-off discs), press to make bend or you can welding ¾ flatbar for the rubber foot. About 45 minutes of your hard work. Another 45 minutes to fine tune the blade if you're picky.

Just think, the manufacturer could make multiples in far less time and overhead. Then, they jack the price up just enough to make it out of reach for the common man. So, in the times we live many will opt for the less expensive or improvise the best they can with what they can. It is very disheartening to know such great things require more than so many can afford. Nonetheless, it is something I would love to own.

I’ve been digging with Fiskar’s pro digging shovel, I like that it is aluminum. I don’t care about buying another $60 brand new one even if I have the warranty, And I seriously value being able to jump Onto a shovel after a long trench. It can’t all be done with the plant one foot and push maneuver. Where I live, anyway. You hit a rock. That thing is probably 27 cubic inches of rock or bigger and you will have to dig the whole thing out… No point in having a sharp edge lol and the dirt that is dirt is sunbaked and we pick axe it and scoop it out The aluminum shovel is nice for that

@@sunnymoondog another cool thing I like about it is that can be sitting on the ground and still dig a hole without having to stand back up.. it has alot of weight so you can pierce the dirt easily. Also also I read the reviews on Amazon. I seen one person broke their handle. It's real easy to start prrying it and using that handle but go lower don't use the circle part, go lower when you want to pry. If that makes sense

@@randyman8984 oh dear. I got mine today. I'm not strong enough to get through the thick thatch! It's really difficult. Also, we have clay soil so it's harder anyway. One of my best spades is an old victorian drain (or post hole) spade. It weighs about 8 pounds, blade is 18 inches long, 6 inches wide at the top, tapering down to about 4 inches at the edge, with a fair radius. The forging is about 1/4 inch thick at the top, tapering to about 1/8 inch at the cutting edge, sturdy ash handle. Its almost like a kango hammer, the impetus will go through buried bricks, roots etc with just one chop. Just used it "unconventionally" to turn over a plot that was infested with zillions of ash tree roots, next best thing to a rotovator.

Will this tackle up lifting bamboo roots... that's a real test! If so, I'll seriously consider it. I bought the so-called: 'cuts like a knife through butter' spades....'Golden Zabo', these teeth on sides and looks like a beast with all the bells & whistles! Well, guess what? After 20 minutes of using that spade on removing bamboo roots, the shaft slightly bent after spending over £50.

Please stop confusing the words shovel and spade, they are not interchangeable. A shovel is used for moving loose materials from once place to another, such as sand or gravel. A spade is used for cutting into soil in order to dig it out. For that reason spades are far more strongly constructed than shovels. Yes you can use a spade like a shovel but try vice versa and you will quickly bend or even break your shovel.

I can appreciate the video and your enjoyment of the shovel. However, I'm not fond of short handle shovels. My own favorite is a True Temper long handled pointed shovel that I bought in the seventies (more than 40 years ago). It's wearing out and I didn't care for it properly but I sharpened it often and now that I'm thinking of replacing it it seems that I'll have to pay more than $70 to replace it. I like the long handle because it gives me leverage when digging and lifting a heavier load on the shovel.

I was thinking the same thing watching this. I weigh 200 pounds and can stand on the shovel to use all of that. The shovel weighing an extra 2 pounds is supposed to help me out cutting roots or digging? I have a square nose shovel that I sharpen, and use for edging and stripping ice off the walk, a spade for digging, and a drainage shovel for getting deep under things, all made in the USA, all lasting well, and I'm still out only half what this thing costs.

Jesus Christ saves from sin. Romans 3: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Hebrews 9: 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Isaiah 64: 6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Revelation 21: 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Romans 5: 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 3: 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 14: 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Romans 10: 9-10. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Jesus said John 5: 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 1John 5: 10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. Ephesians 2: 8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Romans 8: 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 15: 3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5: 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. .............................................................................................................................................................
