Athena the ferret struggles to bolt a defensive buck rabbit in front of the underground camera.
As it was early spring, this young buck was in the mood for fighting. Athena, being a medium sized jill, struggled to match the rabbits agility in this open chamber. Had it been a tighter burrow, her job would have been easier.

It's really interesting to watch how timid working ferrets are when compared to a mink! I mean, I have always known mink were far more intense, but I didn't realize just how MUCH MORE intense they are until watching these ferrets work the rabbits! These ferrets work more like a cattle dog, carefully nipping and trying to drive the rabbit out. My mink work more like a pit bull, fearlessly latching on and wrestling a rabbit down the first chance they get!
@ZeusPolecat
@ZeusPolecat 10 жыл бұрын
A hob ferret would be stuck in there more I think, but yes a wild mustelid would have a higher prey drive. It reminds me of a sheep dog nipping to move sheep. I wonder if that's bred into the domesticated working ferret, as it delivers better results (bolts rather than kills) because kills take more time to retrieve meat.
@JosephCartertheMinkMan
@JosephCartertheMinkMan 10 жыл бұрын
Zeus Polecat I'm sure it must be! I can see how a ferret who is always killing under ground, rather than running around flushing rabbits, is more of a pain in the butt than anything else! I see it just like you described. A sheep dog must have just enough prey drive to stay interested in and chase the sheep, but not so much prey drive as to make them kill or injure the sheep. I'll bet it's the same with working ferrets. Not enough prey drive and they wont seek out, nip at, and chase the rabbits out of their warren. Too much prey drive, and they're killing rabbits, which means the ferreter must dig the rabbit up, or leave it to rot. Either way it's a loss of time and effort, or a loss of meat. Very interesting stuff!

I have a hob ferret that would totally change your mind lol , he would totally smash and kill anything in front of him if he could , yet my jills will work pretty much the same as zeus ferrets only with a little more bite I suppose , me myself I don't dig very much through a season as the jills will come away if they have killed in , if the hobs killed then I will be digging because he will stay until theres nothing left lol, , yet every single one are as gentle as can be when handled , especially the hob , but when its work time they get it on

At 3:51 "I'm helping!" That right there is why I love ferrets. They're the goofs of the animal world. They even make a unique sound when they are stuck that means "Human, help! I am stuck!" If hunting with ferrets was allowed in America, I feel they would be so much more popular.

That was the rabbit making that noise because the ferret look like it had a grip of the rabbit with its mouth when the guy pulled it out. You will see the ferret on the rabbit.

Yeah I like this footage too. Shame I've not captured something similar again. I think it's mainly due to the space the rabbit had to manoeuvre. Down a tighter burrow the ferret gains the advantage.

very good to watch the ferrets work the rabbits. that 2nd rabbit in the 1st set was a propper stubben sod. i had one like that yesterday. sat up in the purse net on a bolt hole then went back down. lucky enough its head was wrapped in the purse net as i pull the big male rabbit out it was kicking both hob and jill ferret to bits behind it. keep posting these great videos cheers

I just wondered, why you ferret keepers don't attach some small bells (used in falconry) on those ferrets and long nets? so those ferrets might drive rabbits out of their hole quicker and you could spot your ferret and catch easier by sound. By the way, I am from Cyprus and we are prohibited to use any animal to hunt, apart from a gun dog. Thanks
@ZeusPolecat
@ZeusPolecat 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, 4:24 the ferret is wearing a bell. I don't usually use them though. Mainly useful when ferreting in long grass or bushes. I've herd of people using them on long nets too but I guess Its only helpful when visibility is reduced or when working a very large area.

don't know much about this but why didn't the ferret kill the rabbit at 5:36? Are rabbits not prey for ferrets?
@ZeusPolecat
@ZeusPolecat 7 жыл бұрын
Ferrets are a bit softer than their wild cousins - the European polecat. There is a fine line between a 'polecat' that kills rabbits below ground (less meat in the bag) and one that doesn't take any interest in the fight. So a ferret that gives the rabbit enough abuse to bolt it, but not go as far as to kill it is a treasure. Athena gets a hard time here for her performance here, but this was a tough bunny and I have much respect for the way she dealt with it. She knows her limits and kept herself safe...

The basics are as simple as netting the holes and letting the ferret go down to explore. Are your ferrets descended from workers or is were they bred to be pets? Best to watch my videos in order, I tried to edit them to be self explanatory.

Yeah certainly it's not a solid rule. I took on a couple of rescue jills once and they had no interest whatsoever so I tend to seek kits from working parents now. That isn't to say all 'pet' ferrets won't work.

the Native Americans prayed for the spirit of the animals they hunted, and that the animal live on in peace for eternity. when i watch videos like this, i feel like im watching animals getting hunted and killed for sport and pleasure. anyone who makes a channel off of these types of things are begging attention to those very two things. to me, it just ain't right, we have the ability to have compassion for things that die, respect the life you're taking and wish it peace in what is to come. it will teach you what it truly is to be a hunter and it will show god you're humble and thankful for your meal. animals dont hate other animals, they have a respect for all walks of life because none of us would exist without one another.

Rafael Alma this isn't representative of all ferrets, usually ferrets used for this have enough aggression to attack the rabbit.

Sory but these animals are not hunters, they're just curious.You need to train them. kzbin.info Different animals but same principles.

jamsyjo I mean they're not trained.On the video they sniff and hesitate. If they were trained they would of launch directly and attack.

Forbidden Name I guess you did not saw the link i gave.This man trains minks. All that youre saying is true but im talking about this video. You can be smaller but know how to approach prey when you properly trained. Not just sniff it. Oh and im no expert, Im just telling what im seeing. he uses natural instinkts of the animals. One is curious, the other is fearful by nature. The link is helpful to enrich his training methods.The man explains many things in his channel. The training should be very similar.

Hello. Yeah so this wasn't the best performance from the ferrets (especially the small one) I'll admit, they do better in my other videos. Ferrets don't need trained. Yes they are curious and that's helpful as they will want to explore the warren. They instinctively want to kill rabbits. My thoughts on why they did not preform here is because they usually attack from the rear, laying along the body of the rabbit, this can be seen in my other videos. I'm assuming this rabbit managed to kick her in the face and so she did not want to attack from the front, you can see her trying to flank around the rabbit. The ferrets are used to fighting rabbits in confined spaces and this large opening gave the rabbit an advantage. I am familiar with Joseph Carters minkenry. Ferreting works better when the rabbit is not killed below ground. His mink cache but dragging a dead rabbit through a warren is hard enough by hand. When my ferrets kill below ground I need to waste time digging down to get the rabbit. It is not very productive.

Zeus Polecat Yes.i agree with you.Ans he hunts smaller prey.Rabit is way bigger. its hard for mink, let alone to ferret. His methoths are comming from falconry.Even without the cacheng its useful to train the animal to attack on dead animal or skin. That way they will have practice and a chance to gain more confidence and skills & attack with no hesitation.
