This is one of the best-known Christmas hymns ever written and probably dates from the 18th century. The words are often credited to John Francis Wade, who also wrote down the tune.

I grew up in this tradition as a chorister, from the age of the smallest of these little fellows, in America. We always used this version, or one very similar, with the massive unison of choir and congregation on the last verse, and the rich brooding harmonies elaborated in the organ alone. It always gave me chills from the very first time, about the age of 6 or 7. It felt like the mind of God.

For my family, Christmas begins with this service: our community falls silent, people return to their families, media is turned off (no more, "BUY STUFF, BUY STUFF!!") and we have a quite & happy evening, before finding our way to the local church (wherever we may be) for Midnight Mass with neighbours or strangers - Happy and grateful times :)

Cleobury is one of the most respected men in ecclesiastical music breathing on this planet. Needless to write, the descant he's arranged is absoulutely stunning! My favorite bit of it is between 2:53 and 3:01 where the chorister trebles are soloing with the organ with the most beautiful of chord changes and harmonisation which are truly 'wicked' with a 'these days this is what is happening' twist from the 'new school' if you like. Not for the traditionalist at all. Peace!

it takes one to know one; it takes choral training to appreciate choral music. Unfortunately, there are far too many party anthem worshippers and rock music stoners who get shivers for nuts. If one day you are raised to the right hand of the father, will you choose to greet the anthem of angels or thrash heavy rock that only can resonate with the works of demons. If you choose to come here, then save you shivers for something else. Rendition and parts training is hard work.

I think this is Douglas Tang, Organ Scolar. Douglas Tang is a freelance British conductor and keyboardist. Previously Assistant Director of Music of St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney and Chapel Organist of the Old Royal Naval College Greenwich, he has also held posts at various other cathedrals and institutions - most notably that of Organ Scholar of King's College, Cambridge. Born in Hong Kong, Douglas emigrated to England after having won a music scholarship to attend Harrow School. Moving to Dulwich College for sixth form on a music and organ scholarship, his original path was attending conservatoire for both the piano and flute - having achieved diplomas in both. However, having discovered his love for the organ at a late stage, he subsequently read music at King's College, Cambridge whilst being organ scholar. He spent his gap year in between as organ scholar of Hereford Cathedral - a place he considers his second home.

I used to sing this in primary school a lot at Christmas time but without all these heavenly harmonies in place. There is something unique about the 2010 version. The harmony in the third verse and the accompaniment of the church organ in the last verse are much richer than any other year. It's the less common version though and may be arranged by Sir Stephen Cleobury personally.

@donhenri01 King's hasn't sung the Willcocks descants since Ledger took over; he wrote his own Descants, and Cleobury wrote his own when he took over. Cleobury actually wrote new descants in 2009, this is one of them. "Once in royral", with that wonderful top B, is another, and there is also a new "Hark the herald", yet to be sung. King's did do the Willcocks "O come" and "Hark" in 2009 for Sir David's 90th birthday. Cleobury's new descants are in "Christmas at King's College" from Novello.

Hi Claire, the following was published in the press and full article is on our channel page: As usual, this year - remarkably, given the pandemic - the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 4. But there will be a major difference: instead of hundreds of people packed into the medieval chapel, its pews will be empty. (UPDATE) Just learned today that the service will NOT be live, but a recorded version due to ongoing concerns about Covid. The television version on UK Channel BBC 2 at 17:45 GMT Dec 24, will go ahead as normal this is always pre-recorded.

+YoureAbsolutelyRight Organist was Ben San Lau. An amazing young talent. Became organ scholar at King’s College Cambridge in 2009. FRCO the same year. Think he left King's in mid 2012 to do a postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music, studying piano accompaniment.
