Our German Shepherd also had epilepsy when he was 9 yrs. He did fine on medication for a while maybe a yr. After a year we had to double up on medication then it just stopped working. He had 18 seizures in one day. We couldn't go to work and leave him alone. Unfortunately we had to put him down. I never saw my husband cry so hard. It was a very emotional day for the whole family.

I am so sorry you had to go through that! Sounds like you did what was best for him. I used to have seizures and while I felt no discomfort during them, afterward I would feel so tired, sometimes nauseous and cold afterward. Luckily as I grew up the seizures stopped. My condolences. It's so hard to lose a pet.

Have to wonder if theres possibly an environmental trigger for the epilepsy, like certain lawn chemicals, or flowers or mushrooms. I'm sure the owners have investigated, this is just me wondering. So good to see Zeus again, and that was an amazing furnado! 🥰
@rmkenney3 сағат бұрын
It does make sense - two unrelated dogs, acquiring epilepsy? It does seem like there's an external cause. The food they feed the dogs, or something in the house or yard.
@brammetjedejong86192 сағат бұрын
That was the first thing I was thinking. In the Netherlands we have a large population that are farmers or daughters of farmers that work especially in the flowerbulb industry that get for example parkinsons. It is related to the pesticides that are used. Being a dog you will probably need a lot less pesticides to develop something
@aliciadonadio25972 сағат бұрын
Possible, but I think it's more likely genetic. Two dogs of the same breed are "related" even if they're not family.

I have every sympathy for his owners. I had a pedigree German Shepherd who had epilepsy. I saw a specialist vet who was able to tell me the name of the dog way back in his line who was the source with even seeing his pedigree documentation. Every one of his progeny had epilepsy as a result of poor breeding methods. My dog died young as a result of the epilepsy and he also changed his character. He was a lovely dog and it was heartbreaking to see him having seizures and finally losing him.

I was never anxious before I suddenly got epilepsy at 30 years old. Not sure if there’s a general stress response happening due to signals in the brain, but I could not stop panicking as soon as anything out of the ordinary happened. It took both anti-seizure meds and benzos to sort that out.

1:09 Actually, most dog breeds that originated from the past hundred years are inbred, which makes German/King Shepherds (unfortunately) related to one another. Not so strange when distant cousins share the same degenerative condition; King Shepherds originated in the 1990s, after all. The first King Shepherds probably lived long, full lives, but once breeders started with the inbreeding to maintain their "pure" bloodlines, yikes.
@kellykat80572 сағат бұрын
In my experience as a vet tech in the distant past, the majority of our patients with seizures were GSDs pure bred or mixed, long or short haired. No matter the breed, seizures are tough to watch & can be difficult to get under control. So glad Zeus is under control with medication now. 🖖🏼✌🏼🤟🏼

Maybe he's traumatized from all the medical procedures and vet visits. He needs to remember that grooming means less itchy skin and a lighter fur load.
