The original Chronic album is 100% must-hear beginning to end, uninterrupted. Literally one of the most influential records in all of hip-hop. Imho it’s the pinnacle transition from old school to (what at that time was considered) new school. Even though it dropped in ‘92/‘93, it brought an official end to the 80’s and ushered in the 90’s the way no other rap album could. Do yourself a huge favor… don’t listen to the singles, listen to the entirety.

Parliament’s music is HEAVILY sampled in hip hop, especially in the west coast and especially by Dr. Dre. The sample on this song is from ‘Swing Down Sweet Chariot’ and ‘Mothership Connection’ by Parliament. Parliament and Funkadelic are a collective of musicians with the legendary George Clinton being the lead for both. Parliament was more rock influenced but still funky. Lots of guitar licks and such. Funkadelic was definitely funk, lots if horns and funky bass lines. Together, they formed P-Funk. Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, Warren G and Daz being heavily influenced by the P-Funk sound put a gangsta twist on it and called it G-Funk. And that’s the sound that heavily dominated west coast music in the 90’s.

the Chronic is a classic album, from start to finish. The sample for this cut is 'Funkadelic - Sweet Chariot'. The Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton influence is all over this album. Of course, this was after Ice Cube left NWA, and then Dre left and was doing his own thing (Ren did a couple solo joints, but poor Ren and Yella were pretty much never heard from again). There are Easy E 'disses' all over The Chronic album, but in this song in particular, many don't catch the subtle jab at Ice Cube in the 2nd verse: But I don't represent no gang bang, some brothers like lynchin', but I just watch 'em hang... Cube had just started another group (before Westside Connection) called 'Da Lench Mob' and Dre was still hittin Cube. Although none of them could/can touch Cube lyrically, the 'beef' was still alive and kickin. You should do a whole album review of The Chronic, it is pretty much the introduction of the G-Funk sound, Snoop, Warren G, Daz, Corrupt, Nate Dogg, the Lady of Rage, and a few more artists.

A forty, a blunt and an ok sound system is all you needed when this came out. But in the car, this was like a mofo concert. In philly, they didn't play west coast rap on the radio much, beside mc hammer, but you heard they stiff in every car. A dre production was just some next level stuff. He changed the bar in the industry. Producers had to expand their 'digging in the crate' mentality to different genre's and sounds.

Solid choice…like others have said, THE CHRONIC album is an all-time classic and deserves the full album review. It almost single-handedly shifted the balance of power in Hip-Hop from NY to LA and signaled a new era. I’m sure you’ll get several recommendations for the main players (Snoop, Cube, Cypress Hill, Warren G, Too Short, E-40, Digital Underground, DJ Quik, Pharcyde, etc.) but you should also start checking music from movie SOUNDTRACKS albums from that era…there are some gems out there: MURDER WAS THE CASE ABOVE THE RIM ( these first 2 are from the DEATH ROW label and are classics in their own right) FRIDAY THE SHOW MENACE II SOCIETY GRIDLOCK’D DON’T BE A MENACE TO SOUTH CENTRAL WHILE DRINKING YOUR JUICE IN THE HOOD RUSH HOUR POETIC JUSTICE TALES FROM THE HOOD

G-Funk defined a 10 sec period within our existence, and that reality is super frustrating if you can decipher what CA has contributed to Hip Hop. G-Funk and gangsta are relevant, but mere blips on the radar, and mad commercial. The same could be said about NY.
