You are correct, Sputnik-1 was the first man made object to orbit the earth. Laika was the name of the most famous dog sent into space, and the first earth-dwelling animal to orbit the Earth. She served on board Sputnik-2.

Re: The zero gravity flight: It's a parabolic manoeuvre. In other words, the plane flies in something like a sine wave. During the "pull up", i.e the steep climb, the passengers feel hypergravity, during which they feel like they weigh twice as much, and feel glued to the floor. During the parabola, as the plane goes from climb, over the hump, and into dive, the passengers are weightless, i.e feel "zero gravity" (for 20-30 seconds). During the "pull out", the dive back to the bottom of the sine wave, it returns to hypergravity. They also do a version with a flatter profile than simulates moon gravity, which is about 1/6th Earth's gravity.

The way the 0g flight works is the plane flies up and down, repeatedly. On the acceleration up for about 30 seconds the people on the plane will be stuck to the floor. On the acceleration down the plane accelerates the at the same as gravity downwards and so you get the feeling of weightlessness for about 30 seconds at a time

Laika was on board Sputnik 2 (November 3, 1957) which was about a month later Sputnik 1 (October 4, 1957) due to time constraints there was no time to develop a reliable heating control system and Laika died within hours from overheating.

There's a ride at Disney Florida's Epcot similar to the cosmonaut training machine Karl went on. It exposes the rider to forces up to 2.5G's and simulates a landing on Mars. Very fun ride.

The way a zero gravity flight works, is: Parabolic flights reproduce gravity-free conditions in an aircraft by alternating upward and downward arcs interspersed with level flight. They provide a microgravity environment for scientists to conduct research without actually going into space. The other way zero gravity is achieved is by flying up to what is known as INNER space (the very edge of the earths atmosphere) and NOT outer space to also achieve zero gravity flights, hope that helps? 🤔

Zero gravity in the case of the plane means the plane is diving with an acceleration equal to Earth's gravity so the passengers experience apparent weightlessness. It is pretty much identical to the weightlessness experienced in Earth's orbit. A spacecraft orbiting Earth is continuously freefalling to Earth but due to the forward motion of the spacecraft, the Earth's surface curves away from the spacecraft at the same rate as the spacecraft is falling. It is therefore not zero gravity in the true sense of the term.
